FLETCHER, of Putnam. .The Printers' Car. The following article was prepared for yesterday's paper, but was crowded out by the extended report of the celebration. Conspicuous in the trades procession Wednesday, and, indeed, the feature of the industrial display that we are justly proud to say shed such honor on the noble sons of toil of our fair city, was the gaily decorated Printers' Canopy, which we, disciples of our illustrious prototypes, Guttemberg, Faust and Franklin, deem worthy of more than the passing notice, given in the regular report of the procession, that will be found in yesterday's issue. More especially do we deem this necessary, that we may in this connection, return our thanks, on behalf of the Evansville Typographical Society, to the ladies and gentlemen who so generously aided in rendering peculiarly attractive, among the multiplicity of arts represented, the emblem of our honorable craft '"The art preservative'' of them all. i In doing bo they brought Nature and Art jto their aid, combining the productions of both in some instances, (as in the canopy, iand basket of fruits and flowers suspended from its apes) with such good taste and harmony of arrangement, that the practiced eye of the horticulturist, might in ruin scan the fairy-like bower without being able to determine the handiwork of the Creator from that of the creature. We hazard nothing in saying that their efforts were duly appreciated not only by the ever-grateful typos, who experienced inexpressible feelings of pleasure, but by the crowds of enthusiastic spectators that lined the march of the procession, who seemed to be peculiarly interested in the working of the minature press, which was kept busily engaged during the entire time in "throwing off '' copies of the "first gun" announcing the appearance of the day star of our liberties The Declaration of Independence the demand for which, we are happy to say, despite the pressure, was fully supplied. The Press very appropriately led the van f the mechanical trades in the procession ; he pioneer of the Arts and of . Civilization itself ever foremost in the bat- - .le of Liberty and Light, and by its irradia, ing rays dispelling the clouds of tyranny sectarianism and bigotry ; daily laboring to nake the people of the earth one vast brotherhood, as God intended they should be, it '8 surely deserving of this place in all patiotic re-unions where the masses come toether to jubilate over the reign of Progress! Jence and Prosperity, which since our birth a a Nation has marked tho history of our 'teaven-favored land. We tender the special thanks of the Evansville Typographical ociety to the following ladies and gentlemen St the kind favors extended them: Miss mde J. Wheeler, Miss Lottie Laud, Miss Iollie Elliott, and Miss Mollie B. Haff, ;ho so kindly volunteered their services in ecorating the Canopy ; Mrs. McLean for ictures; Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Amory for .-ergreens; Capt. Dexter, of the Bou-en, r a Flag; Mr3. Rittenberg, and Messrs. oodge, Wheeler, Jos. P. Elliott, Sellman, id various others, for courtesies rendered. ( S We talked yesterday with a gentletan from Carmi, Illinois. He reports the junty "all alive" for Old Abe, and says tere is no doubt that he will carry the late. There are very few Democrats but ,ill acknowledge that Democracy is " gone '" in Illinois. The enthusiastic Republics of Carmi have raised a Lincoln pole e hundred and fifty-eight feet high ! Three '.ndred copies of the Chicago Press end ibune are taken a, the Carmi Post Of-

Address of Mr. Victor HI soli, on the Fourth of July, after Reading the Declaration of Independence. Fellow Workwomen and Mechanics: I sincerely thank you for the honor you hare conferred upon me by selecting me from your number to read, on this occasion, the Declaration of Independence. I shall always remember with pride and pleasure this celebration, gotten up by the Mechanics and Workingmen of Evansville,in which thousands of our fellow-citizens have joined us in offering thanks to Providence for iu blessings of Freedom and Liberty and to pay a worth- tribute to the memory of the great Patriots who, this day 84 years ago, redeemed this country from oppression and tyranny. The Workingmen and Mechanics of FJvansvrlle, in representing in procession their different Trades, did not intend to have their merits thus appreciated, nor did they need to aim at destroying the lukewarmness formerly shown to home manufacturers by many of our Merchants and Traders. No ! for who knows not that Kvansville and its Mechanics have placed themselves far beyond competition from other places. We have attained these happy results by the co-operation of all classes of our community, by the aid given to skill and industry, and by the generous support lent to mechanical enterprise, by the men who, by thrir social and commercial standing, felt it their duty to patronize Home Manufacturers. I snid Duty, for a duty it is to us all links of one chain to lend ourselves mutual support, and thus contribute to our general welfare. But we have made this demonstration to honor the memory of our fathers who have secured for us Independence and Freedom ; who, in the days of trials and struggles, havealways found readier aid at the hands of 1 he Producers than Consumers, and who well knew that the Mechanics and Workingmen form the strong pillar upon which rests the prosperity of our country. Mechanics and Workingmen ! let us bid welcome to all who came to take part in this celebration, and let us celebrate this great day in a manner that will leave a pleasant recollection in the minds of all present, and in a manner that will do honor to the Mechanicsof Evan3ville.
A Citizen of Lawrence county Shot BY a Horse Thief. A horse thief was pur- ! sued by a citizen of Lawrence county named Graham, on Saturday last, who succeeded in coming up with the runaway just as he had entered the town of Bedford, when the latter suddenly turned upon his pursuer, and shot him through the heart, killing him instantly. The murderer escaped from tke town, and j stealing a horse, eluded pursuit until he reached Bloomington, where bis conduct i excited suspicion, and the Regulators got j after him. lie fled to the timber, and was pursued by the entire company, numbering nearly one hundred men on horseback, armed with shot-eunt, rinYr? and side-arms. After an excitii.ir chase of several hours, he was overtaken, an 1 making a show of resistance he was shot down anil captured. His wounds are not strious. He obstinately refuses to divulge his name or place of residence. Two hundred and eighty-four do!- ' lars were found on his person. He wus ! lodged in jail at Bloomington. The affair ! created intense excitement, and it was thought tho enraged citizens would take the j miscreant from jail, and administer sum- i mary justice to him. We glean the above ! particulars from the Lafayette Courier of Monday. The Bainbridge Argus, published at Bainbridge, Putnam county, has hoisted the j names of Breckinridge and Lane at its j mast-head for the Presidency. The Breckinridge ball is beginning to roll, and will j gather accessions at every revolution it makes. All those veteran Democrats who I have voted for Gcn'l Jackson for a series of years, will undoubtedly go for the gallant j Lane. Hurrah for Constitutional Democracy. BtThe Porter (Ind.) Democrat is out for Breckinridge anil the gallant " Marion of the Mexican War.'' Now that the ice is ' fairly broken, there is no doubt that a number of the Administration papers In Indi- ' ana will wheel into line for the " Constitu tional M Democracy, and wage '.var on the j squatter sovereigns. Pitch in, gentlemen : it's none of our funeral ! CiaT" Uur friends of the Volksbote gaxe yesterday, a five-column report of the Fourth of July doings and sayings. Large numbers of extra copies of their paper were sold, most of them to go to the old country, to show the people there how we celebrate the anniversary of our independence. The gentlemen of the Yolksbole are very enterprising, and publish a first-rate paper. i How Stands Col. Forney? Our curios- : ity is felt to know how Col. Forney stands ! in the Presidential fight. The Washington I correspondent of the New York Herald writes that from present appearances it is i difficult to perceive where the Squatter Sov- . ereiguty caudidate can secure a single electoral vote, and adds : " Col. Forney, it is said, will not support him, especially upon ; the new plank inserted in the platform, that j the party are willing to abide by any decisi ion made by the Supreme Court. Forney j will assume the position of an independent j man, giving aid and comfort equally to all parties in his paper." Eijgp'Don't fail to read the admirable letter of Judge Bates in this issue of the Banner. It is a noble tribute to the worth and I excellence of Mr. Lincoln. Mr. Bates shows in this production the marks of a true patriot, an able statesman and an honest man devoted to principle for its sake alone, and ' not, as is too often the case with the lendi ing men of the country, for the purpose of ! promoting his own selfish objects and aims. Oreencastle Banner. I The Beauty of Truth. Truth is always I consistent with itself, and needs nothing to ; help it out; it is always near at band, and sits upon your lips, and is ready to dropout . before you are aware : whereas a lie is 1 troublesome, and sets a man's invention on the rack, and one trick needs a great many more to make it good. Truth can live in ' all regions, flourish in all soils, and become ' naturalized in all climates. 8ta?At Paoli, Indiana, Judce Turpie came out unequivocally for Douglas; denounced Mr. Vancey and the slave-code Democracy with great spirit and in the strongest term's.

"Well," replied Abe, " I have changed my position in that respect, but you have not." tif"I5rcckinridge is the youngest candidate ever nominated for the Presidency.
