The examination of the High School on Tuesday completed the ardnous duties of our diligent and worthy trustees, who, we doubt not, are as willing to retire from their laborious task as are teachers and pupils to relinquish the imparting and receiving of that knowledge so essential to the young idea in its " shooting " capacity. Notwithstanding the uncomfortable state of the weather during the past examinations, we were pleased to notice the bravery with which the gallant little bands would resist each and every charge of the welltried veterans. No quarter has been given by trustees or teachers, nor has any been required, since the youthful ideas were strongly garrisoned at every poiut. The High School Examination passed oil' very creditably to both teachers and pupils. The manners of the pupils throughout the day in such a hot room was truly praise worthy and were evidence of that thorough au.l systematic training so essential to the order and quietude of the School-room, and for which we think their teachers, Mr. Butterfield and Miss Colhurn are deserving of much credit. At the close of the afternoon exercises, " Young America '" mounted the " rostrum and exhibited atypical view of the eloquence of a Cicero and Demosthenes. I doubt not some of these latter day elocutionists would receive no detriment if they should copy the style of some of these youthful orators. We cannot refrain from speaking of" young Law, who spoke finely and appeared so much " at home " for a speaker of his age. Master Pennington also acquitted himself admirably. His articulation was distinct, and his manners easy and graceful. We think he exhibited marks of oratory seldom noticed in one so young. That paper, too, was really a gem which we acknowledge we had not expected to discover. Many were the "keen hits'' it contained, and then the Btyle in which it was read by Miss Maggie Walker lent enchantment to the whole production. To our efficient trustees we cannot be too grateful for Hie services they have rendered in bringing our schools up to the standard they have attained. Much inure would I be happy to speak of, but time and space forbid at this lime. Thkta. Pllte County Mnisl'uuveutlou. Pursuaut to notice, the Republicans of Pike County met in mass Convention at Winslow, on Saturday, June, 30th. The Convention was called to order at 1 1 o'clock p. M ., aud temponly organized by calling Richard Gladisfa to the Chair, and appointing James Jones Secretary. On motion, a committee was appointed, composed of one from each Township, to select permanent officers for the Convention. A committee of three, consisting of J. L. Phillips, J. J. Collir.s, and Miles Chambers was appoiuted to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting, and also, to determine the number of votes each township was entitled to cast in the CoDvention. On motion, the Convention adjourned to meet at one o'clock. At one o'clock the Convention re-nssrm-bled. The Committee on permanent organization, through the Chairman, Mr. Adams, reported as follows : For President, Temple Woolsey ; for Secretaries, J. E. Phillips and E. P. Thorpe. Report adopted. The Committee appointed to draft resolutions, and to fix the vote of the townships, reported as follows: That each township be entitled to one rote for each 25 votes cast therein lor Morton in 1856, and one vote for each fraction over 25. This hasis gives the townships the following vote: Jetl'erson 3, Washington 11, Madison 3, Clay 3, Logan 3, Patoka J, Marion 2, Monro- 2, Lockhart 2. Total, 31. Necessary to a choice, ltj. Said committee reported the following resolutions : Resolved, That we fully endorse the platform of principle? laid down by the Republican National Convention at Chicago, and we pledge our earnest support to the nominees of that Convention. Resolved, That in the Republican State ticket, we have presented to us candidates for our suffrage, in whose ability, honesty and integrity, we have the utmost confidence; and we pledge ourselves to use all honorable means to promote their election. The resolutions, were, on motion, ndopted. The chair called for nominations for Representative, and the following named gentlemen were put on nomination : Dr. G. D. Jaquess of Petersburgh; Andrew J. Weils of Winalow ; and Miles Chambers of "'lay.
A motion was made and curried, that the Convention proceed to take a ballot lor Representative. Dr. Jaquess arose, and in a short and handsome speech, thanking his friends for the honor conferred upon him, withdrew his name from the Convention. Mr. Chambers in a few neat and appropriate remarks, expressed his obligations to his friends for their partiality, and also withdrew his name. Andrew I. Wells, was, on motion, nominated by acclamation. The following named gentlemen were put in nomination for Treasurer: D. Hewins, R. M. Case, aud R. Harrell. The Convention proceeded to take the first ballot, which resulted as follows : Ilewins Washington, 5; Clay. 3; Madison, 1; Logan, 3; Monroe, 2; Lockhart, 1; Marion, 2. Total 17. Dakwin Hewins, having received the majority of all the votes cast, was declared the nominee of the Convention for Treasurer. On motion, Richard Gladish was nominated for Commissioner, by acclamation. The following resolutions were offered by J. E. Phillip, and unanimously adopted : Resolved, That L. Q. DeBruler, Esq., of Spencer couuty, is a gentleman w nose character, talents, and principles, eminently lit him to represent us in Congress. And be it further Resolved, That if lie will consent to become a candidate, we pledge him our hearty support. The following resolution, offered by Dr. Adams, was also unanimously adopted. Resolved. That Harvey Green Esq., of Dubois County, is requested by this Convention to become a candidate tor State Senator, for the senatorial district, composed of the counties of Dubois, Pike and (libson, and if he will consent to become a candidate for said office, we hereby pledge him our hearty support. The business of the Convention being concluded, Mr. Wells was called out, aud accepted the nomination for Representative, in a very appropriate speech. The Convention then adjourned to the grove to hear a speech from Jas. G. Jones Esq., of Evansville. Mr. Jones spoke nearly an hour and a half, in his usual able and convincing style. There was a large crowd of enthusiastic Republicans present, and the utmost good feeling aud harmony prevailed.
The proceedings of this Convention were ordered to be published in the Petersburgh i Reporter, Evansville Journal, and Vincennes I Gazette. Convention adjourned. TEMPLE WOOLSEV, Chairman. John E. Phillips, "1 , . ., , ' y Secretaries. L. P. 1 HORPK, j FlTXPATKJCX Declines A Great Loss to i the Douglas Ticket. Senator Fitzpatrick, j of Alabama, the original nominee of the I Douglas party for Vice President, has declined that honor, and Herschel V. Johnson, of Georgia, takes his place. This is a loss j both ways lo Mr. Douglas. Fast, there is something tit the " sweet Irish brogue ' iu the name of Fitzpatrick. He would have dne very well fur a line.il descendant of SU Patrick, at least till a;':er the election. A Dublin paper has shown that Garibaldi u a descendant of n n Irishman lutuusd Garry Baldwin. How easy then, to prove Fitzpatrick a chip of the ouid sod. But Fitzpatrick has refused this use of his name, and thus gives Mr. Yancy another victory over Douglas. In the next place, it we mistake not, Herschel V. Johnson was a red hot secessionist in 1851, and this puts a stop to the Douglas cry of " disuriionists '' against the other wing of the party. How often is it that when luck turns agaiusta man everything turns against him. In such a case "it never rains but it pours.'' .V. Y. Herald. The Blue Ribbon of the Turk. The j Philadelphia l'ress pays: Some curious per1 sons may ask, " What it the Derby ?"' With our usual suavity ana characteristic re-oli-iness, we reply : " Epsom, a small market town, in the county of Surrey, i3 situated close to Banstead downs, and is some fifteen miles from London. On these downs, in the weelt lietore Whitsuntide, conies off the annual English saturnalia called Epsom Races. The two events of these races are the contests for the Great Derby Slakes and the Oaks. A former Earl of Derby, with the spoiling predilections which seem lo ruu in the blood of the Stanleys, occupied a country seal, called the Oiks, close to Epsom. Here lormerly lived that General Burgoy tie w ho surrendered to General Gates at Saratoga, I in 1 1 1 1. Three years earlier, he had written a play which, after his own residence, he called " The Maid of the O iks." To enI course horse-racing, the Earl of Derby I gave two prizes, to be run for at Epsom. I These are " The Derby,"' which invariably I comes off on Wednesday, and "The Oaks,'' i w hich is contested on Friday. The names ', remain, but the prizes run for are raised by subscription." t&& To-day we ruu up the names of : Douglas and Johnson, nominees for Presilent and Vice President of the United I States; uot, however, bccaacc the former is j our first choice, or the choice of four .fifths 1 of the Democracy of Warrick county for v.e know he is not. Neither do we declare our intention to support Mr. Douglas, because we approve of the course of the Convention that nominated hiui. The spirit and feelings which controlled the action of that Convention were, in our opinion, well I calculated to do a great deal ol mischief and accomplish but very little good, so far as the successof the Democratic party and its principles is concerned. However, as matters now stand, we shall support Messrs. Douglas and Johnson, as it is evident to our mii.d that Mr. Douglas is the only man who can save Indiana from falling into the hands of the Black Republicans, and thus contribute to the defeat of Lincoln to the Presidency. Warrick Democrat. Jcdgk Dates' Lkttkh. Don't neglect to read the admirable letter of Judo;e Hates it will repay well. It furnishes ndditooaj evidence of his high cjualifications for the Presidency. We now nominate him for Lincoln's successor. Let the Missouri Republican smoke this for four years in its rapacious pipe. Paris (III.) Deacon. We second this nomination of the Beacon w ith all our heart. Hauler Down. The Dougia3ites have been exulting; over the fact that the Peoria (111.) L'nion, an Administration paper, hal hoisted the Douglas banner. The Rump ticket has since been hauled down by the editor of that journal, who declares that the former step whs taken in his absence, and was wholly unauthorized by him. Breckinridge and Lane will have a large vote in Illinois. Cin. Ga:. During the closing hours of the M. B. General Conference, when the exciting subject of slavery was up, and after a decisive vote had been taken, somebody inquired if that settled the vexed question. Dr. Kingsley replied, " Yes, so far as I know." Bishop Morris presiding " May it remain so, world without end !" Otunes "Amen!" !

The Toledo Times says that the ludies in the vicinity of the battle ground ol Tippecanoe have sent a cane cut from these grounds, and S.r3 in money, to procure a gold head to it, to John C. Heenan. They were in poor business. tVHr. J. B. Some candidates are hit. A Good One. The Cleveland Herald is responsible for the following: It is gratifying to know that one member of the Democratic National Convention Mr. Jones of Tennessee got his Democracy from "Nature's fount." In general, Democrats are "brought up on a bottle." Sam. Houston's Health. Tiie wheat crop has been harvested in this county, aud it is the universal opinion that the yield of grain for the amount of straw was never equaled in many instances as high as 100 plump, wellilevdoped grains being produced to the head, and in all cases far above the average. Oats are also remarkably fine, and the yield will be immense. Corn promises a heavier yield than ever before in the county. Vin. Sun. NEW ADV EASEMENTS.""
