STEAMBOAT REGISTER. FROM 6 P. M. MONDAY TO 6 P. M. TUESDAY. ARRIVED. Poland, Pittsburg: Charley Bowen, Cairo: Grand Turk, St. Louis: Lue Eaves, Green River. DEPARTED. Poland, Memphis: Charley Bowen, Cairo: Grand Turk, Pittsburg. BOATS LEAVING TO-DAY. Duubar, Paducah: Lue Eaves, Ashbysburg. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was oppressively warm, notwithstanding the fact that there was considerable air stirring. The thunder shower which for three or four successive afternoons, has regularly visited us, failed to make its appearance, the wind being from another quarter, and the evening closed clear. ......The bottom of the river continues to approach the surface at this point, but the bars are beginning to cut out so that there is reason to believe that the channel will be in a better stage for navigation in a short time. Hence to Louisville the depth is variously reported at 3 1/2 to 4 feet. At Louisville there were 37 inches reported in the canal yesterday, with a fall of about 2 inches in the preceding 24 hours. Thence to Cincinnati there are 4 1/2 feet reported, The river hence to Cairo is in a good stage for boats of the lighter draft. ......<Business> yesterday was very dull, the shipments inconsiderable, and the rates unchanged. The Louisville <Courier> has the following with reference to the rates at that port. Freights to New Orleans have further advanced, with engagements on the <Fanny Bullitt> at 75 cents per bbl. for potatoes, $1 to $1 25 for pork, $1 50 for whisky, 80 cents to $1 for flour, and 50 to 60 cents for pound freights for through and way lots The rate for mules was $8 per head, with no shipments. ......The <Lue Eaves> came in from Green River last night, with Warren's brass band, on board, and crowded with visitors, who came to witness our celebration of the Fourth. ......The <Masonic Gem> got in from Bowling Green at 11 1/2 last night, with 216 passengers, most of them visitors attending the celebration of the Fourth. The German band returned on her. ......The <Grey Eagle> arrived at about half past 9 o'clock last night, bringing a great number of passengers, who visit our city for the purpose of participating in our celebration of the natal day of our national independence. ......The <Dunbar> arrived this morning, and will leave for Paducah at her usual hour to-day. Any persons coming up on her to attend the celebration here, who may wish to remain tiil evening, can take passage on the <Autocrat>, which will return to Mt. Vernon with the excursionists who come up on her. ......Four o'clock this evening is the <Lue Eaves's> regular time of departure for Green river, but as she is to carry back some excursionists she may not get away so soon. ......To-morrow is the <Bracelet's> regular time of departure for Louisville, but as she has been taken out of the trade, there will be no regular packet on that day, unless the <Trio> arrives and takes her place. This she should have done on Monday, but failing to get a paying trip she preferred to wait for a better time. ......To-morrow is the <Masonic Gem's> regular day of departure for Bowling Green. She was not on her regular time at her last departure from this place, but we presume there will be no further irregularity in her running. ......The <Autocrat> left yesterday evening for Mt. Vernon, with the intention of bringing up any citizens of that place who might wish to participate in our celebration of the Fourth. She returns to-night to convey the visitors back to their homes. ......The history of the steamer <Bowling Green>, which was sold here on Monday by Sheriff Gavitt, to satisfy some twenty-three executions, all directed against her, presents a remarkable example of the advantages of experience and superior management in steamboating. She was built in the latter part of the year 1855, by Capt. Liter, her recent purchaser, for the Green River trade, in which she was successfully run by him until within a year ago. Out of the profits accruing from this trade, the steamer <Bracelet> and a large warehouse at Bowling Green, Ky., were built, after which her owner traded her off for the farm on which he now resides. Here her period of usefulness seems to have terminated, and she proved a very bad investment to the person into whose hands she fell, for within less than twelve months she was hopelessly involved in debt, and her purchaser left without either boat or farm. Since she has gone back to her original owner, she will doubtleas begin anew a profitable career. Capt. Liter says he purchased her with the intention of trading her for another Kentucky farm. We doubt not he will realize handsomely upon her, in any event. ======= ETERNITY is incomprehensible. The flowers fade, man grows old and dies; the world lies down in the sepulcher of ages; but time writes no wrinkles on eternity! Serious thought. The momentous present— the golden-like thread, entwining the destinies of the universe. Eternity, the period of God's existence! Earth has its beauties, but time shrouds them for the grave; its honors are but the sunshine of an hour; its palaces—they are but gilded sepulchers; its pleasures—they are but as bursting bubbles. Not so in the untried bourne. In the mansions of our Father can come no footsteps of our decay. Its courts are beyond darkness—eternal splendor forbids its approach. No night there. ———<>——— TOO MUCH AT A TIME.—Pour water hastily into a vessel with a narrow neck, little enters; pour gradually, and in small quantities, and the vessel is filled. This shows the folly of teaching children too much at a time.

Dally Review of tbe Kvansville Wholesale Market. Orncr or fllWHill fimaasi, 1 Tuesday evening, July 3d. J Commercial affairs are at a very uninteresting stage at present. The markets continue very quiet, and there is little or no change from day to .lay in the quoted rate?. The uncomfortable heat of tbe weather is of itself sufficient to produce a dullness in trade, were there not other causes. There appears, however, to .e an ordinary summer business going on, dealers not expecting to do much at this season. The celehration of the pioneers of Northern Ohio occurred on Wednesday, at New but.;. The Cleveland Paindeuler, in noticing the gathering, remarks : There will he many interesting relics on exhibition at the celebration, prominent among which is an English oak chest that came over in the Mayflower with the Pilgrims. This ancient cuest is the property of Mrs. Kellog-g, on the West 9ide, and it has been in her family lor many years. It is still in a remarkably good state of preservation, the elaborate c.trvittur on the front side shining as brightly, perhaps, as whtn it landed on Plymouth Rock. Another very interesting relic is an anvil, vith which Isaac Beardsley, the son of Abruham lieards'ey, commenced the blacksmith business, in the town of Huntington, Fairfield county, Connecticut, about the i yivir 1 i oo. I he anvil was given to him by i his son Eli, who remove;! to Catharines, TioI ga (now Schuyler; county, New York, nearly CO years ago, where he kept it in service for nearly 40 years. He gave it to his son Ammon, who removed to Stow, Summit county, Ohio, in the year 1837. He, duI ring the present year, gave it to his sou Is- ! aac L. Beardsley of Cleveland, iu whose I possession it now is. The bottom of tbe anvil is groiT 'd for forging bayonets, and the I g-reat grandfather of the present owner did j good service with it during the- Revolutionary war. An Octoroon from Mississippi. A Mississippi planter has purchased the elegant brick house at 145 Prospect street, for his daughter, an octoroon, 16 years of age. He I pays Mr. Clark, the recent occupant and proprietor, 7,000 for the house. It is for ! her use while she is being educated in this city, fche will shortly arrive, accompanied by her governess and one or two free servants. A daughter of the Rev. J. C. White has been employed ns a general instructor of the youug lady. Though born a slave, the octoroon is now frei , and the planter will spare no pains or expense to give hera thorough education. Her income while she resides here is to be 53,000 a year. The preparations for her advent have created considerable excitement in he immediate neighborhood of the house she i3 to occupy. Cleveland J'laindealer. Kf.sh;xation of a Catholic Bishop. The Catholic Bishop of Pittsburgh, Rt. Rev. Michael O'Conner. has resigned his see, nnd his resignation has been accepted by the Pope. Tbe cause of his retirement is said to be a disease which incapacitated him to perform the duties of the Kpiscopacy. Change of climate, and to some extent of employment of his time, are recommended by his physicians, in accordance with whose advice he has resigned his oflice. Bishop O'Connor is regarded as among the most I om.liio e..lo,lr of the American Citholic Hierarchy. Bfe2?"'Ve are under individual and personal obligations to Mr. Ingle for his kindness in .enabling us to return oo the E. & C road on last Friday. Being informed that Messrs. Morton and Turpie were to speak in Sullivan in the afternoon of that day, and that both gentlemen were desirous of reaching this city ou Friday evening, he generously '- ordered that a train should reraaiti at the town of Sulliruu until the speaking was over, and then bring the gentlemen and their friends that evening to this city. It was a great accommodation to those who came on the train, and an act of kindness on the part of Mr. Ingle that will not soon be forgotten by those who were benefitted by it. The obliging ar.d gentlemanly conductor, Mr. Williamson, also has our thanks and the thanks of others. Such accommodating officers mu3t certainly mike their road the favorite of the people. T.
