We intend, also, to do all in our power for the success of the State ticket at the head of which is Bun P. Lamb. We believe that it is high time that the people were arising in their might and routing from power the present party, whic h in consequence of long-contiuued success has become hopelessly corrupt and tyrannical; and installing in its place honest and conscientious men, fresh from the people and acquainted with their needs uud desires. The Journal will endeavor, fairly and courteously, to urge the claims of Lincolx and Hamlin on the people of this section of country, and in so dniug we sk the support of all who favor the dissemiuation of true republican principles. EVANSVILLE JOURNAL CO. THE CHICAGO PLATFORM, A8 A3IESDEO AN11 Alt O'Tt.I'. Rttotveil, That we, the delegated representatives of the Republican electors of the United States, in ('.invention assembled, in the discharge of ths duty we owe to our com itituents and onr country, unite In the following declarations: 1st. That '.he history of the nation duriiifr the sast foar yean, lias fully established the propriety and necessity of the organisation and perpctuatiou of the Kepublicm party ; and that the cause w hich calle) it into existence are iermanent iu their nator, and now, more than ever iiefore, demand its peaceful and constitutional triumph. J That the maintenance of the principles promulgated in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in tbe Federal Constitution -" That all men are created sqnal ; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that xnong these are life, lil-rty, and the pursuit of happiuea. ; that to secure these rights, governments r instituted smong men, deriving their just pow;rs from the consent of the governed " is essential io the preservation of our Republican institutions ; ind that tl.e Feileral Constitution, the Kigl.ts of the States, atd the Union of the States must and hall lie preserved. 3. That to the Union of the States this nation iwsj"its unprecedented increase in population, its iniprlsing development of material resources, its 'tfpid augmentation of wealth, its happiness at mine and its honor abroad ; and we hold iu ab lorrence all schemes tor Disunion, come from w hativer source they niay : And we congratulate the ountry that tio Republican uiemlier of Cougress at i.ttoie.i or countenaucea tne inreata ot IMsiniou so often made by Democratic u smhers, with'Ut rel uke and with applause tram their political ssocialea, and mm denounce those threats ot disiuiu, in case of a popular overthrow of tueir asendeucy as denying the vital principles of a free ovemuieut, and as an avowal of contemplated reason, which it is the imperative duty of an inignaut People sternly to rebuke aud forever siiiice 1 4. That the maintenance Inviolate of the Rights older and control its own domestic institutions c-ording to its own judgment exclusively, is es'Dtial to that balance of powers on which the per--tion and endurance of oar political fabric deends ; and we denounce the lawless invasion by rmd force of the soil of any State or Territory, 0 matter under what pretext, as among the gravest T crimes. 5. That the present Democratic Administration as far exceeded our worst apprehensions, in its easureless subserviency to the exaction of a Seconal iutereat, as especially eviuced in its desperv exertions to force the infamous Lecouipton Coultution upon the protesting people of Kansas ; in nstruing the personal relation between master id servant to involve an unqualified property In irsons ; in Its attempted enforcement, everywhere 1 land and sea, through the intervention ol Oonresa and of the Federal Courts, of the extreme etensions of a purely local interest ; and in its -Herat and unvarying abuse of the power intrusted It by a confiding people. 6. That the People justly view with alarm the ckless extravagance which pervades every departon! of the Federal Government; that a returu to id economy and accountability Is indispensablo arrest the systematic plunder of the public treasy by favored partisans ; while the recent startling velopnitnts of frauds and corruptions at the Fe.lal Metropolis, show that an entire change of 7. Thata-heDnew'dolma tuat the Constitution, of , . u .-its, curries oiavery inio auv or an ui lue rntoriee of the I'n ted States, is a dangerous lltical heresy, at variance with the explicit pro di ns of that instrument Itself, with conteniporaous exposition, and with legislative and judicial sc eilent ; is revolutionary in Its tendency, and bvertive et the peace aud harmony of the country. That the normal condition of all the Territory the United States is that of freedom : That as r Republican fathers, when they had abolished very in all our national territory, ordaiued that 10 person should be deprived of life, liberty, or perty, without due process of law," it becomes runty, by legislation, whenever such legislation leows&ry, 10 maintain mis provision ot f Hie Couwiwu against an aticmpis 10 violate tt ; and we iy the authority of Congress, of a territorial leglure, or of any individuals, to give lga) ex 1stto Slavery iu any Territory of the United tee '. That we brand the 1 nt re-opening of the icau (Rare-Trade, under the cover of our Nana! Flag, aided let perversions of judicial power, 1 crime agaiust Humanity and a burning shaute jut Country and Age ; and we call upon Congress take prompt and efficient measures for the total 1 final suppression of that execrable traffic.
t 10. That in tho recent vetoes, by their Federal Governors, of the acts of the Legislatures of Kans aud Nebraska, prohibiting Slavery iu those Territories, we find a practical illustration of the boasted Democratic principle of Non-intervention ii n. I Popular Sovereignty embodied In the KansasNebraska lull. wiiA a damonsti ation of thodeeeptiou '. : Iran.! involved Latvia. 11. That Kansas should, of right, be immediately admitted as a State under the Constitution recently formed and adopted by her people, aud accepted by the flouse of Representatives. Tint, while providing revenue for the support of the general govcruuiaut by duties upon imports, sound policy requires such an adjustment of thwse impost as to encourage the development of the industrial Interests of the whole country- ; and we commend that policy of national exchanges, which secures to the working men liberal wages, to : agriculture remunerating prices, to mechanics and j manufacturers an adequate, reward for their skill, labor, and enterprise., and to the nation commercial i prosperity and iiidepcudeuce. I S. That ve protest agaiust any sale or alietia- , tioti to other of tho Public Lands held by actual j settlers, aud against any view of the Flee Uomestead policy which regards the settlers as paupers or suppliants tor put lie bounty; and we demand the passage by Congress of Hm complete and satis- I factory Homestead measure which has already pass- I ed the House. 11. That the Republican party is opposed to any j change in our Naturalization Laws, or any State i legislation by which the rights of citizenship hith- ; erto accorded to immigrants from foreign lauds shall I abridged or impaired ; aud in favor of givug a full and efficient protection to the rights of all claasus of citizens, whether native or natural- j ied, both at home and abroad. 1"). That appropriations by Congress for River and Harbor improvements of a National character, required fr tbe accommodation and security of an existing commerce, are authorized by the Consti tutiou, and Justified by the obligation of Govern- i meut to protect the lives and property of its citizens. ! 16. That a Kai Irond to the Pacific Ocenu is ilnpcratively demauded by th.- interests of the whole country ; that the Federal Ooverniiient ought to render immediate and efficient aid in its construction ; and thai, as pieliminary thereto, a daily i Overland .Mail should DO promptly established. 17. Finally, having thus set forth our distinctive . principles and views, we invite the co-operation of all citizens, however differing on other questions, who substantially agree with us iu their aflirmance , and support.
