Charley Bowen, Cairo. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was un- pleasantly warm. The River is receding rapidly, and business is dull. ......The favorite, <Charley Bowen>, the regular packet for Cairo—the only Evansville and Cairo packet—leaves to-day at 12 o'clock. "A word to the wise,'' &c.— secure your passage—pile on your freight. ......The Louisville and Henderson packet, <Grey Eagle>, will be down and return to Louisville at 6 o'clock this evening. She is the only regular packet going up the river to-day. Her passenger accommodations are unsurpassed by any boat on the Western Waters. ......It is reported that Mr. Duncan has sold one-fourth of the Henderson packet <Grey Eagle>, to Gosen Taylor, of Troy, Ind., a successful flat-boat pilot. ......The <Masonic Gem, D. B. Campbell> and <Lue Eaves> left for Green river yester- day, with fair trips. ......The Pittsburg tub, <Marengo>, came down yesterday loaded to the guards and towing a big barge, also well laden. She had proceeded but a short distance after leaving the wharf, when she went through some queer maneuvers, which seemed to indicate something wrong on board of her. She first stopped her engines, drifted in toward the mouth of Pigeon Creek, then headed up stream, and afterward reversed her engines and "propelled backward" down the river, then righted again and steamed away. ......The huge <City of Memphis>, which passed down last Sunday night, had two thousand tons of freight on board. She could not have carried another pound, as her guards were under water. Last winter the <Maria Denning>, it is said, carried fifteen hundred tons at one time, and the immense <Magnolia> passed this point with eighteen hundred tons, said to have been the biggest freight ever before carried by one boat. At the rate of twenty-five cents per hundred, a low figure, the <Memphis> ought to clear six or seven thousand dollars on the round trip, even if she comes back without a pound of freight. Let the small-fry steamboats grow bigger!—<Memphis Avalanche>. ......The following is from the Cairo correspondence of the Louisville <Courier>: The <Diana> reports only seven feet on bars to Louisville, and Ohio filling fast. She rubbed at the following bars, drawing seven feet five inches: Scuffletown, French island, Sisters, Caseyville, Cottonwood, and Cumberland, with seven feet on each, and falling rapidly. She also reports plenty of freight in the Ohio. The Mississippi is still rising to St. Louis. The Ohio is rising here, owing to backwater from the Mississippi. The steamer <P. B. Cheeny>. Cairo and Columbus Railroad packet, broke one of her shafts this morning. The <Post Boy> takes her place again until she is in running order. ......The <Republic>, from Louisville, passed down on Sunday evening, towing the dismantled hull of the once magnificent <Eclipse>, the wonder of the Western waters, the like of which we may never look upon again. She is being taken to Memphis to be turned into a wharf-boat. "To what base uses must we come at last! '' After conducting this remnant of former grandeur to the end of her last voyage, the <Republic> will return and lay up for the present at Cairo. ......The wreckers have gone to work on the sunken coal-boat which went down some weeks ago on the other side of the river, and will soon have her cleared out of the way. ......The steamer <Aurora> passed up about 10 o'clock last night, with a hcavy trip, and towing a well-loaded barge. She had on board the machinery of the dismantled <Crescent>, which is now lying at Napoleon, and will be converted into a wharf-boat. The machinery is to be put off at New Albany. ......Officer Bligh, Saturday morning, received a dispatch from Cincinnati, stating that Mr. H. C. Estes, a passenger on the <Telegraph No>. 3, had his state-room entered, on the up trip of the boat from this city, and was robbed of $500. There was no clue to the thief, and a reward of $250 was offered for his apprehension.—<Lou. Cour>. ......The huge <John Simons>, it appears, was not sold as reported. ST. LOUIS, June 25, P. OtHCw of Kvunmi e Jot P.NAL Monday evening June 2oth A genera! ijuietude still erva !es commercial affairs, and there has b.en very Utile movement in the markets during the pat week. We note no material change in any of the articles ijuoted except Wheat, which has fallen 00 10Uc since our last review, but there is so little dolus that the rates now ((noted may be considered nominal. Flour is still maintained by dealers at the rales formerly quoted, and there is likely to be no change until the idd stocks are disposed of, and the new crop comes into market. The Grocery market is dill very ouiet. while the staple article are firmly maintained at the rates quoted. Sugar and Cothe are buo ant, and there may be a rise, but as yet no change has taken place. Nothing new has presented itself in Provisions, the market remaining quiet and firm, and prices unalteied. Whisky remains quiet aud unchanged.
