He was admitted to the Bar in 1833, when he was 24 years of age. 3f Soul sleepers is the name of a new reiigious sect which has recently made its appearance at Pairfleld, Iowa. Four men and one woman, apostles of the sect, have been tarrying at that place and sleeping in a tent. They are opposed to churches, deny the divinity of Christ, teach that the soul is a material subetanue, and sleeps with the body until the resurrection. g Our old friend Brooks, of the New York Esprit, moved in the Baltimore Convention to ' ruuke the nomination of Bell and Everett unanimous, and the notion was carried, and yet Mr. Brooks up to this time withholds his editorial support from the tlekei. The tone is very sweet, and it taeomathing new and set everybody to listening nl criticising. It may not be generally known, but we are informed that it is true that the best chime of bells in the United States is at Notre Dame, near St. Josephs, in this State. As we were somewhat in error in giving the weights of the Christ Church bells, we give them again : B, 1,822; F sharp, 1,500; A, 1,040; C sharp, 500. State Scntintl. Pbbkticbisms. If the high functionaries of Government at Washington knew for seven years thr-t tbe late New York pestmaster was stealing the public money, they are not fit for their places. If on the other hand they did not know for seven years that be was stealing the public money, they are not fit for their places. And ir. either case those who uphold them or hetiitate to denounce them are not fit for any decent place. Louisville Journal. Postmaster Fowler has run away, and Buchanan and his Cabinet, if they had any sense of shame, would run away too. Ibid. A Straw. A Washington letter writer ays : There is a good sign for Lincoln at the Departments. The clerks have nearly all discovered that he is not a sectional man, and that, after all, he wi'l make a good President ! Some go further still, and say that they have no doubt be will be elected. The very men who a mouth ago were fierce Douglas men, now talk Lincoln and a modified form of Republicanism. It all means t imply this: that to the office-holders Abraham Lincoln is the seining man I Edward Evbrstt. The Savannah Republican, whose editor was present at tbe Charleston Convention, says of the Hon. Kd ward Everett: We, at least, know and we assert it as an evidence that great virtue and patriotism will have their triumph sooner or later that a large minority of the 'at Charleston Democratic Convention were perfectly willing to pay their tribute to his worth by Bam (bating- him as their candidate for the Vice-Presidency. We say we snow this So be so ; we derive the information from personal interviews with the delegates, both from the North and tha South. CtRCCUSTASCIS ALT! GBSDBBa AS WlLL as Casbs.
