BIVER ITEMS. STEAMBOAT REGISTER. The Weather yesterday was sultry, and indicative of another severe storm. The atmosphere was heavy, weighing down oue's energies until the efl'ort to chase down an item was quite Bafficient to overpower US. The- River, which was about at a
titan tl swell, dull. yesterday morning, began gain to and was rising slowly last night. Liusiness yesterday was unusually The arrivals and departures were tew, and luit little life was visible on the levee. The Dunbar and Greenville left, the former tt noon and the latter in the eveniDir. Neither of them had an v load worth bragging about. The I' mull arrived yesterday alter- ' noon with a good trip. We are indebted 10 i both of her clerks tor favors. The Union ! is a staanch and reliable packet. The WaodforJ will be doe to-day for Xew Orleans, and will probably take oil" what little stirplus freight is to be found on ! the levee. Fishing is said to le suju'ib at I Spottsville, during the present week, and Bportsaien who choose to avail them- , Strives of the excursion of the Charleg Bowen ou Friday, can demonstrate' to may lady friends who may chance to go with them whether, they "have any taking ways." The same storm that did BO much damage at Louisville and Cincinnati was niso severely felt at Paducah. The chim- j ueys of the Jam's Montjoimri, which was , at the landing, were broken off just above the drcks, and there was daugei for a little time, that the vessel would take tire. The I old and ntw Xatchez were in port at the same time, but escaped from any serious Injury. The following additional particulars in reference to the effects of the storm at j Louisville, we glean from the Louisville Qonrier : The tremendous raius of Monday, it is thought, will cause an immediate rise in the river, but as the dreadful storm prostrated the telegraph, we are without any definite intelligence. The storm was one of the most terrific and devastating along the course of the river that we have ever known, as will be seen by the details in our local columns. The Jacob Strader came very near being capsized, losing considerable freight overboard, and the Emmie was nearlv wrecked at Ghent. Her cabin, chimneys, and ratio upper works were swept away, tud ji lot of ! freight was lost; and in addition lo those already enumerated, over twenty coalbonts and sixteen lives are known to be lost in toe vicinity of Madison. The Juruh Stormier lost considerable freight overboard, nnd entered protest here. The Higkfyer, at Shippingport, was also caught in the storm, and her cabin blown over so tar, that one arbeel-house wus touching the water. On tiik Rocks. The Rocket from St. Louis, with a brace of barges in low, lodged on the reef of rock's at the bead of the canal yesterday mora hag early, and bad not succeeded in getting otf at dark last evening. We did not bear how the mishap occurred, but suppose it was want ot power to S tern the current. l.ou. payer . Reeelpte Iy River. FROM BOW LING GREKN, ri.it ITniok. -Ci hhds tobacco, 7 wagons, I. A.
