Tin; Baltimore Constitutional Union Convention meets on Wednesday the 9th of May. The Chicago Convention meets on Wednesday the 16th of May. The Baltimore DoubleHeaded Democratic Convention me-ts on June 18th. The proceedings of all these gatherings can be obtained through the Journal a day sooner than through any other medium ! The political campaign is just commencing, and stirring events will follow eicu othei all summer in rapid succession. An account thereof can lie had iu the Journal soon after the circumstances occur. So send on your names for the Daily, Tri- Weekly, or Weekly Journal. The Conacqueucca. The New York Tribune, in speculating upon the probable effect of the selection of John Bell as a candidate for President, concludes that his nomination presents a much more formidable aspect towards the democrats, than towards the Republicans. It argues, lhat if the dissensions of the Democrats iu the Southern States are persisted in, they will not merely be defeated by the Baltimore nominee, but the party will be annihilated. While, should the Republicans make a mistake at Chicago, they may lose two or three states, whose electoral vote is necessary to elect a Republican President, but their organization aud power will remain undiminished, and they will still bo I the most influential party in the couiitry. We respectfully dissent from these opinions. The nomination of John Bi II will prove disastrbtis alone to the Republicans, should they, with blind infatuation, sacrifice everything to advance the schemes and interests of one man. There are thousands of electoia who have, voted with the Republican party, heretofore, who will so soon as they discover that everything i? to give way before a man, a large portion of whose creed they never have, and never can endorse take up their hats and bid adieu to the organization forever. On the territoiial questions, they may coincide with any candidate that may he selected at Chicago, but there are other questions growing out of the slavery coutroversy, on which there is a vast difference of opinion even among Republicans. Talk us we may, there is just as Butch danger of running to extremes iu the North lis in the South, aud we can upbraid the Southern States for Ukiag ol tin positions on the vexed question w ith but Utile -how of consistency, when member!) of the great orgaui.aliou of the Northern States are equally ultra on a point in which tbey are not so vitally interested. We cannot stigmatize Southern men lor violating the law of the United States by importing blares, w ben we put forward, as our leaders, men who advocate a violation of the law regarding the return of fugitive slaved. With what propriety can we denounce the fire-eaters of the South, and yet promote ihe extremists of the North. Let the Chicago convention prove incapable of correctly yOtlgUlg Ihe feeling of ihe people -as we contests then- are indications ot its 90 doing and its nominee will meet with a defeat, lo which, iu comptartSOfl, the failure of Gen. Scott in 1852 might with nroprietV tie termed a triumph. Japanese Imprraalona. The New York Journal of Commerce gives the following as its idea of the impressions that will be made on the Jupaueg', when tbey visit New York: Recovering from the ijualms of the stomach occasioned by Washington politics and politicians, our tawny guests will come to New York to behold metropolitan splendors, ami to taste the luxuries of metropolitan hospitality. Hero, again, they will meet inconsistei c es and defi ;icnccs disagree- , able to their taste and habiu. Accustomed to the clean, well-swept streets of Yeddo, the disagreeable compound of dried mud and manure with which our thoroughfares ! are paved, will irritate their noses and destroyed their fine apparel. From their national habit of the use of the daily bath, it ! is possible that they have views in regard
to personal cleanliness utterly inconsistent with the theory and practice of the miscellaneous crowd by which they will !- surrounded. At night they will gaze with astonishment at a certain endless procession on Broadway ; for in Japan they hut up the women in secluded vi I iag.-s. Tbey have the good taste to keep them out of sight at least. Feasted on the gross viands of tinAldermen s committee, the Japanese stomach, accustomed to rice and delicate jellies, will inevitably become disordered, if not dyspeptic. If the liquors principally used at the City Hall are forced upon the Ambassadors, it is highly probable that their constitutions, habituated only la the delicate flavors of Japanese tea, will entirely give way before the potency of peiMMed municipal beverages. As ihey wander about the city they will wouder at Hie magnificent warehouse-" I' ll III Mlntl by rubbish, and at Ibe disgusting placards posted on the corners. They will Eee the s'atue of Washington in the Park, in the altitude of a beggar holding out his hat for a penny. Another American reposes under a monument surrounded by a miserable fence, decorated iu its turn by quack advertisements. All these public spectacles will interest, if they do not charm, the Japanese gentlemen, and give him food lor thought. But his astonishment will roach its climax when he comes to read the metropolitan newspajiers. He will wonder how people who see themselves attacked in the ungentlemanly columns of the Herald do not instantly disembowel themselves with a sharp sword, as Japanese etiquette, requires when one is intuited. As tor the police reports, full of stories ot drowned women found in the rivers, of mysterious murders, robberies, and disappearances, running over with records of deserted children educated in crime, anil of the sufferings and exploits of the perishing and dangerous ciass, how will these things affect men accustomed to orderly and well-governed cities ? For example, what will they think of New York civilization when they reau that a dead baby is eaten by rats in a put lii- hnciilnl fur tin- k'm-U ? Truly cv ci,,.;, niust ioolv jn,0 our affairs before we receive these heathen. Deadly- Hostility of tlae --?oiuli lo The Washinpt ,n correspondent of the New York V, w riling on the 9th inst., says : The short speech of Benjamin ol' Louisiana, was very effective, and finely eloquent. He stated the argument very clearly, aud was terribly severe upon the Democratic jobbers, who wish to go into Another canvass with a platform which means one thing South and another North. His sarcasm was sharp as a Damascus blade, and he used it with great effect upon both Olingmati and Douglas, who sat under it with thi! sweat standing in big drops on their foreheads, lie had no doubt, he said -alluding to something Mr. Cliugnian bad said -that the spoils might be easier won by casting principles aside, but he would not participate in another contest ol that sort, lie wanted the rights of the South recognized in the platform, and he would support any man who could honorably Stand upon it. He took ground boldly against Mr. Douglas and popular sovereign ly, and (.'aye notice that he would support neither. The debate only shows how bitter the feeling is against Mr. Douglas and UOW much he has to overcome even to gel ihe nomination, much more to be elected President. The South is in open arms ngaaitl-vt him, and it is Ihe sheerest humbug lo claim tor him any Southern support which will be of any avail to him. The Kentucky Democrats assert lhat with Nr. Douglas iu the tield as a candidate, that State would be lost by ten thousand majority, ami Governor Wise has declared that Virginia would give her vole tor the Union (Jonventiou candidate as against Do tin la.-, file factions are at work night and day. Douglas ami his li i, -nils are on their knees lo Southern member. They try to conciliate, yet secretly plan his nominal ion by force of numbers by a majority vote, al tialtiaaore.
