FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SC PERI VTEN DENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. t&Frow w the Time to Subscribe for lite Ecanscille Journal. We are getting exclusive telegraphic dispatches. The Baltimore Constitutional Union Convention meets on Wednesday the 9th of May. The Chicago Convention meets on Wednesday the 10th of May. The Baltimore DoubleHeaded Democratic Convention meets on June 18th. The proceedings of all these gatherings can be obtained through the Journal a day sooner than through any other medium ! The political campaign is just commencing, and stirring events will follow eit h other all summer in rapid succession. An account thereof can be had in the Journal soon after the circumstances occur. So send on your names for the Daily, Tri- Weekly, or Weekly Journal. Presidential Speculations. We glean some indications of how matters are drifting at Chicago from a correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazelle, lie states that the German Republican hostility to Mr. Bates is subsiding and that they will offer no factious opposition to bis nomination. The friends of that gentleman are pressing his claims with enthusiasm aud with every probability of success. They already claim ten States for their favorite. Col. Fremont has instructed the California delegation to withdraw his name if it should be presented to the Convention. The Col. is engaged in a more profitable undertaking than prospecting for the Presidency, and we do not blame hint for not desiring the nomination. Messrs. Seward and Chase's prospects are growing smaller by degrees and beautifully less. The Opposition to their nomination is so decided from the doubtful States of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and New Jersey, that their friends dare not press their claims with much pertinacity. Morgan aud Spaulding of New York are understood to lie averse to forcing Mr. Seward on the Convention, but think his claims should be recognized. Horace Greeley is opposed to granting the "distinguished Senator" even a recognition. It is now ascertained that the New York delegation is not unanimous in bis favor, and that several of the New England States will only give him a complimentary vote, unless they are assured that he will be speedily nominated. Cameron's friends are active, mid it is thought he will poll a good vote. Little ieaSM to be said about McLean, ! Wade, Liucoln, or Fremont. These gentle- j men are generally regarded as second choice candidates and their claims will not be Canvxssed a great deal until the (Convention tails to agree upon sonic one of the more prominent aspirants. Mr. Lincoln, however, will be presented with ii great deal of enthusiasm by the Illinois delegation, who tliink "Old Abe," is just the man for the crisis, and should, by at) means, be noiiiinated, Mou Bolt i no. Rx-G ov. Hunt, of New York, who presided over the Baltimore I'uiou Convention, caused it to Ik- understood that he would not consider himself bound to support the nominations of that laxly. He would wait for more light before deciding. The New York Express, we see, which led off for and advocated the claims of Sam Houston, publishes an address to the people ot that State, in favor of tin- hero of San Jacinto, and inclines to Ihe idea of taking him in preference to the nominee of any Convention All this looks like baiting the Constitutional nominations. Oim. tin;. '1 lie Messrs. Brooks have talked much ol " sma.-hing political machines," within the last year. It appears a political machine was smashed at Baltimore that I bey did not bargain for. We rejoice to know that their infamous effort to sell out a large and respectable vote of the country are being uuveiled, ami tbey will be treated with that scorn tbey deserve. They had better ex plain away the recant developments betore the Covode Committee, in which they figure not much to their credit, before they prate any more about " honesty, and smashing political machines." Douglas I u Georgia and Louisiana. If there are people who supose the Democratic pai ty of tbe South disposed to favor Douglas in any shape or form, or to sustain him S3 a candidate for the Presidency in any contingency, they are greatly mistaken. There was an effort in Georgia ami Louisiana to make a show for the Little Giant, in opposition to tbi Seceders, but without success. A Washington dispatch says Senator Toombs received a dispatch to-.U from Augusta, Ga., stating that the Douglameeting there was a pertect failure, and that their proposition to elect delegates in place of the seceders was voted down very largely. A similar failure occurred at New Orleans and also at several other place in the South. Ctn. On z. Nearl3 every Douglas demonstration that ha been attempted in the Southern States since the rupture at Cunt lestcni has proved an ignominious failure. At New Orleans notwithstanding the rockets and music there came near being no meting "t all .i Memphis there was a like failure, mid it will be seen that Ihe attempted leathering at Augusta, Georgia, ulso proved an abortion.

Never no too Much at a Time. Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, in a lecture recently delivered, gave the following history of Lis literary habit.-: :' Many persons seeiug me much engaged in active life, and as much about the world as it I had never been a student, have said tome, ' When do you get time to write all your liooks ? How on earth do you contrive to do so much woik ? ' 1 shall surprise you by the answer I make. The answer is thisI contrive to do so much by never doing too much at a time. A man, to get through work well must not overwork himself, or. if he do too much to-day, the reaction of fatigue will come, and he will be obliged to do too little to-morrow. Now, since 1 be gan really and earnestly to study, which was not till I had left college, and was actually in the world, 1 may perhaps say I have goHe through as large a course of general reading as most men of my time. I have traveled much, and I have seen much : 1 have mixed much in politics and various business of life ; and, in addition to this, I have published somewhere about sixty vol

umes, some unon subiects rcouirini? much i research. And what time, do vou think, ' " I as u general rule, I have devoted to stmly to rending' and writing .' Not more than three hours a day : and when I'arlutinent is sitting, not always that. Hut, then, during those hours, I have given my whole attention to what I was about." TBS Kktout l'utTIXKNT. Mr. Walkins, a colored man, delivered a lecture in Oswego, N. Y ., last week. In the midst of a very tine argument, as we learn from the Oswago 77'o , some pro-slarery gentlemen sent up a ciifd, asking the sjieHkcr it' he was in favor ot amalgamation between blacks aud whites. Replying instantly, he said, " It you ask me as an Abolition tat, I answer, this forms no part of their creed. If you ask me as a Republican, I answer, that it does not enter their purposes. It is not a Constituent of the pinna of either ot these parties. If you ask me as a man, I reply, that it is according tti every one's taste, as the old woman said when she kissed her cow ! " The house was for a long time convulsed with laughter, and cheer on eheer followed in rapid succession. The speech of the gentleman was a masterly production, and as unanswerable as it was convincing. B3Ju.Iessr.
