To the Citizens of Vanderburgh, Warnek, Gibson, Pike, Davit, and Green ("ounh-1. At the last meeting of the Board of Managers of the Southern Oanal Co. the followiug Orders were passed; Resolved, That it is entirely lieyond tin' means of this Board to keep the Bridge crossing the Canal in repair, and that all repairs hereafter will have to las dispensed with. Resolved, That the Secretary forward to the County Auditor of each County through which the Canal passes, a report of the means and expenditures neees-ary to keep the Canal iu boating order, exclusive of accidents. with a reouest that he lay tliesain before the Board of Commissioners, so as I to enable them to jndge of the inability of i the Board of Maaagers to keep the Brvlgcs in repair, and ask them to appropriate a Bum to do it. - It ist well known that the ('anal ifWlfbandoned by the 'fruatecs as a nmi-payiiif,' inatiit'lton and il would lontf ere this have been entirely useless, had it not been for the voluntary association of a ;n: timber of enU rprisiug and liticrnl citizens coi'tiguoiU to it who came lor ward with their money, and 1y the devotion oT much time and trouble, havo kept it in better repair for the, last year than ever before, and have Mbc W without any oxpectatiQii of havini; the tuouey returned, only RS the general pood is promoted by tills great public work lieingkejit in navigable order, An abridged statement is here pre.-ented, of the receipts and disbursements on the southern division of the. The Tolls will only about meet I lie ordinary wants of the Company for the repair force and incidental expenses. The present resources will be exhausted iu the next four or tire months ia making permanent repairs that ara abso lutely necessary to keep the water iu tho Canal, and make navigation reliable, most ot which will be expended on the White River and Fatoka Aqueducts, to render them j eafe. An examination of the report will I satisfy any one that the Canal can be, kept j in repair ODly by the closest watchfulness ' and economy. That there is no money to I keep the bridges iu repair, and that this duly must be performed by the respective; Counties through which the canal passes, as j other streams are bridged. The Board of ! Managers have no interest m the Canal beyond being the mere instrument to keep it in repair for the public good, anil thua hope for and expect the co-operation and support of all the public functionaries and good citizens along the line; and if that co-operation is not extended to this object, it cannot be sustained. The millions of public money which has been expended on the Canal, aud the great good it was calculated to extend as an outlet for the production of the country through which it passes, will be. a failure. The operation of tinwork since it came into the hands of the present Board of Jlnungers, baa demonstrated that the Canal can be kept in repair at a reduced expense A great portion ol the bridges on the Northern Divisiou, extending from Terra Haute to the Slntt: Line, were last year repaired and rebuilt at the expense of I lie counties through which the Canal passe.-., and this year the entire expense of sastaining the bridges will be n.'sumed by the counties. The ordinary expenses on that portion of the t 'anal are less, anil Ihe fevinues at least fifty per cent, greater per mile than on the Southern Division. As a medium of transporting the products of the soil, the Canal is superior lo all others, ' being adapted to the wauls ol the people; anil now alter being completed and deliver- t ed over to them almost without charge, if they should suffer it lo go into disuse by J refusing to give it aitl and comfort, until the J improvement of the counli v Will give it business enough to sustain itsell; it will Ua stigma and disgrace to Southern Indiana, j Tile Board of iManagers having Control ot , the Canal from Kvansville to Newberry, roduccd the expenses to less than mte-hatf what it was forni.-rly, and with Ihe espeii- j elite ill hit: i-.i.-i j em , una aa o niiutoillt. lhat this important work can la: sustained if relieved Iioiu the expense of repairing ami rebuilding the bridges : ami thev hope BUCh action will be taken by the c.tii.ei.s auiUL; liiv line ui iim- i nil Li .1-- will i:illlll this object. u boiaalf of Hie Board, M. It is now first published from the original, in our possession. On the eve of another Presidential PaTVag- ' gle it will be read with interest : Asiilaxo, June 15, l-i8. My Oetu Si it : Before the receiptof your obliging letter of the -19th ult., I was prepared to expect Ihe event which has since happened in Philadelphia. Your letter copdineil to strengthen my anticipation of it. The intelligence of the nomination of Qea. Taylor leached me the same day it was jsiade.
I lost the-nomination from three causes ;
First, the oomtse oi the Kelucky delegation; .iprour!, my very reatdisappoinlmenf in not obtaininy, as I had every reason to suppose I should, the sippon ot the Ohio delegation; uml third, the persevering adherence of the Massachusetts delegation to Mr. Webster. HowsBch delegates am lobe appointed from Kentucky you doubtless have heard from some of our Kentucky friends at Philadelphia. Never was 1 more surprised at any occurrence of the kind than I was by the unexpected poors of the Ohio delegation. I hud receitel the strongest iissiirnciiea from the most emiucul men iu the State, in various forms, that the support of that State would be given to ine, and that it would : nnl go for IJen. Taylor, if nominated. I was j entreated by the tiovernor, and hy several delegates to the Convention, and hy various j other eminent .ersous in Ohio, not to decline I be use of my name before 1 adilrrsseil my Bote to the public. I was informed that I some eight or ten of the delegates were I chosen expressly to sustain my nomination, and that all who were appmted to support Mr. I.'orivin would go for me m-on his declining. Such wns the influence, on my mind of these assurances and this information, that they constituted a leading motive with me in allowing my name to go before the Convention. And if I had foreseen that Ohio would have pursued the course Inch she. did in the OouVentioD, I never would haveconseiitedlh.it my name should have been presented to that laniy. 1 dwell on the subjectot" Ohio, not in any complaining or repining spirit, but. because it is the only important hid, staled in my note to the public, which hits not been sub sepiently sustained. But, it'l had great cause of surprise iu respect to that State, I have abundant reason for eternal gratitude to the city and Stale ot New ork, and to my numerous, faithful, ardent, and enliohleiicd Irieiidsjii them, for llu ir zeajoaj and constant support of me ; 1 and to none more tliau to v oiirseli, lor me ability, activity, euery and efficiency which 30U have displayed throughout the arduous struole. The work is done, and I have no altei naitive but uuie'l submission. I am idieved from piiinful suspense and jreat anxiety, I &ftfUR thecanvass, if I had been nomiiuiled, ntiu iioiu lertrj UJ ie.sjioi!.-.iotii! , n i nun wm elected. I ought not to regret the event, on my own Recount, persouullv, ;uul I believe there are but li-w men who ran bear it So well. I deeply regret that I have no way of testifying my great obJigulions to them , bill ( hope tliey will be assured that I shall ever hold them in grateful rcnninbeante. 'I'lu nomination ol keen.
