The Baltimore DoulileHeKdeil Hemocratir UorrreDtioii Meets on June. 18lh. The proceedings of all tlii-ac gatbertngs can be obtaincil through the Journal a. day sooner than through any other medium ! The political campaign is just commencing, and stirring events will follow ecb othei all . utumer in rajiid succession. An account thereof cnu le had iu the Journal soon after the circumstances occur. So send on your names for the Doily, Tri- Weekly, or Wtthtjf Journal. J-Mr. Uoiiglas is not likely to reap much benefit from the transfer of the Democratic Convention fiotn OharlvRbMl to Baltimore. A proposition is iu circulation in Washington, inviting the Seceders to return, on the ground that the Tennessee platform is pending, which, if adopted, will prom Mtjirfiftfrrj to the South. TUWtahingtoa Star of Monday last says of this movement . " After due consultation, 411 Address to the Seceding Charleston la.iiveiitiiui, from the Democracy of Cottgfeas, has beea prepared, mid is to day being very generally signed by them preparatory to its pnblu a tion. It is understood to embrace proof sullioieni. to satisfy the most skeptical of the Seceders that on re assembling, the Coui en tion will adopt its the Platform of ihe Democratic part , Ihe report of the Platform Committee, indorsed by the dctegations of the soventrt-n Di uiocratic States, and that a harmonious nomination can and will doubtless be made 011 that platform. From all we have been able o learn iu the premises we are satisfied that it wiil be signed by eery Democratic member of both Houses of Congress who is not well known here, either as a disciple of Slavery restriction, under the plea of Squatter Sovereignty, or as having been more or less disappointed iu not being made a Democratic nominee for the Vice Presidency, by and through the favor of the Slaveiy restriction interests in that body such expectants having been much more numerous in Congress than the outside would dream of."
Fearful Signification of Tip top Lim. A young inau who is ser ing out a term in the Michigan Slate Prison, has written a long letter to his friends, dwelling on the causes which led liiiu into crime, ami summing up the Condition of " tip top life,' as understood by rapid young gentlemen . He says : You may not comprehend this term but let me explaiu. By living a tip top life, is meant first to be idle ; second, to arink whisky, OF any thing else (and of course get drunk) ; third, to firaqoent all places of coarse fun, such as cock fights, boxiag matches, negro shows, &c; fourth, to keep a concubine or two; Mid fifth, to steal all they can lay their hands upon. This then, is living a tip-top life. Thus have I fallen, and thus will thousands of .young men fall; 8UThe Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette, relates the following as an illustration of the tactics of Mr. Douglas's friends, and their readiness to sacrifice principle to success : A prominent friend of Mr. Douglas approached Gov. Wise of Va., some time ago, and warmly urged the nomination of Douglas, saying if the South would take him he would consent to the adoption of a plutforui fully satisfactory to the South. io Wise raipondcd, "Do you really think Mr. Douglas would accept a nomination on such a platform ? "I'm sure of it," replied the ; Little Giant s friend. ' So am I," answered the Governor, ''and that is the very reason ; we won't c onsent to his nomination." The ; Doiiglasite retired. Jktj"Tbt- Opposition admire very much I tin; honesty of the Democrats nl Charleston IU splitting to pieces 011 an issue upon which j they disagreed. They admire bail t an 1 imitate. J.mi. Democrat. No, we " can 1 imitate." We lack one . necessary qualification for that; we have; got the honesty, but not the disagreement, j And long may we rest mulct this proud 1 disability. l.vu. Jour. A magnanimous Republican editor sajs the Democracy ' at last are forgetting 1 the spoils.' No doubt he is right. John, I fear you are forgetting me," .said a brighteye. 1 girl to her sweetheart. " Yes, Sue, I have beeu lor getting you these two rears, ' "r"A SiRANut Prophkt.A day or two ago our doughty neighbor of the Journal, uttered the prophecy that the Chicago Convention would 1. luiuate the candidates who shall be nominated by the Constitutional Uniou party at Baltimore. Yesterday, having received new unction we presume, be prophecies that some "rugged issue" candidate will be nominated. We have lost faith in our corpulent neighbor as a prophet. He anew liouolas would be nominated at Charleston, but he was' nt. He says now u to be nominated, but he won't. indeed we arc forced to the conclusion that w hen our neighbor imagines that he bears the voice of the oracle BBeaking within him, he is only suffering trom an attack of the mullitfral's.- JP. . Express. gtaRocUcster, N. V., is a cheerful city for an evening promenade. A geiitlenmu and his wife were walking quietly aloug on Sunday flight, when a piece of wood was flung at tin: lady. The husband turned about to expostulate, and area immediately pounded nearly to death by he roughs.
pay-Tbe Ne Albany LeJyer says the failure to nominate at Charleston leaves the Democracy of the country in a painful and unexpected dilemma. We apprehend the November elections will leave it in a much worse one. A "Mii.Li.No" Match look place on the Indiana side of the falls of the Ohio on Saturday morning last between the " Flying Dutchman," of New Orleans, and John Welch, ol Louisville, forflOOnmde. Eightythree rounds were fought in DM hour and fifty minutss, resulting iu the defeat of Welch, who was pretty badly furnished. Dublin Tricks was one of the seconds. The juuior of a daily paper in Boston, residing in the suburbs, was "outraged" on Sunday, by the sexton of his church, who seated in bis pew a young lady of a rather dark complexion. The editor, with his family, immediately withdrew. Imagine their surprise and shame on learning that the young lady was the daughter of a rich ('ilium planter, and a slaveholder. Thk inventor of the Whitworth rill.states, in proof of its enormous strength, that he loaded one of the barrels with a leaden ping, so long that a full charge of powder was unable to drive it out. On tiring the powder, the plug remained in the liarrel, and the gasse3 ot the explosion all tamped through the touch-hole, leaving the barrel uninjured. The experiment was repented four times, with similar results. In Lynn, Ma.- the. business is slowly improving, the papers any. "All lirst-clnss shoemakers are employed, and, from personal appearance, those who work on this cheaper grade will soon have enough to do. The strike ended in a bud tune for the workmen, as the spring and summer sales weri! about over, and the manufacturing for full sales docs not commence until June or July." An Irishman's Speech. M Och, Jamie, an did yOU never bear ev my spuach afore the IliU'rniau Society?" "No, Cat, how could I, tr sure I was not on the ground." 'Well, Jamie, you see I was Called upon by the Hibernian Society for a spaach ; and be jalx-rs, 1 rose with t he enthusiastic el. eers of thousands and tins of thousand-, with my heart overflowing with gratitude, and my eyes full of tear-", and a divil of a word did I spake !" The Irishman drank l wo and a half pints, and the German three pints. The Irishman, Thomas Onion, died during the night, but. the Gel -man saved his life by eating a quantity of cold tallow, arnica sickened hint, and caused his stomach to eject its coo tents. The Chise.-.e Coisagb. The Cbineee have uo silver or gold coin of their own Silver in "shoes'' of various sizes, generally about fifty taels (jElli worth,) and gold in bars or leaf, are used where foreign money is not current. The banker puts bis stamp upou it, and the ' touch " is thereby sufficiently guaranteed. Any tampering with the quality is rare, but, of course, roguery is
sometimes attempted. As a general rule, however, perfect trust may be placed on the value ; a slight examination satisfies the shroff's. The reliance placed by the Chinese upon the stamp or chop of the banker mnv lie gathered from the fact, that in Canton, foreign dollars are so marked by the gnat nuteeiug stamps of those who pay them away, that the original character of the coin is often obliterated. And iu the North where Carol us dollars unstamped are preferred, it used to lie custom to mark l hem with the bauker's seal in ink. Twelve Years in China. NEW ADVERTISEMENT M.tOH SJIK.
