The Baltimore Constitutional Union Convention meets on Wednesday the 9th of May. The Chicago Convention meets on Wednesday the 16th of May. The Baltimore DoubleHeaded Democratic Convention meets on June 18th. The proceedings of all the.se gatherings can be obtained through the Journal a day sooner than through any other medium ! The political campaign is just commencing, and stirring events will follow each other all summer in rapid succession. An account thereof can be had in the Journal soon after the circumstances occur. So send on your names for the I'aily, Trt- Weekly, or Weekly Journal. Why II ivaiDonr, Considerable surprise was manifested throughout tbe country, when the Charleston Convention, after the secession of the Southern States passed a resolution requiring the same number of votes to nominate.as when the delegates from those States were all present. The resolution completely extinguished Mr. Douglas's prospects of the nomination, aud inasmuch as his friends comprised a majority of the delegates, it was tiought strange they should consent to its passage. The mystery ia now unraveled, and only shows more plainly the utter hope lessness of Mr. Douglas's prospects. After the secession of the cotton growing Stales, Tennessee brought torward a pi. .position, which originated w ith Virgin in, that the Dred Scott decision, should be eudorsed, and thai it should still require 20'2 votes to make a nomination. This was giveu out as an ultimatum, which, if not accepted, would lead to a secession on the part of Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The delegation from New York, dreading another rupture, voted for the proposition, and it was adopted. The whole controversy nurnowed down to the fact that if Douglas had been crowded through, those Southern States would have seceded, arid joined those which had already withdrawn from the convention, and Mr. Douglas's adherents did not dare to face the consequences. Inasmuch as that gentleman has no strength in any of the Southern States, and his nomination was regarded as a signal for them all to bolt, We should like to know if he can lo regardla any other light than thai of a sectional candidate, and his supporters a sectional party. Mr. Douglas stands no chance of carrj -ingttut three or four Northern States at the outside. The proceedings of the Charleston Convention warrant the belief that he could succeed in but few of the Southern States, if nominated; hence, sectipofllisin can Ihj urged against him with much more propriety than it was urged against Fremont. We presume, however, the cry of sectionalism will not now be harped upon by the Northern Democracy as in 1 H5i. That weapon will belaid aside aa no longer serviceable; that humbug will be rejected as no longer profitable. Were we led to doubt the correctness of our position as regard.) the sectionalism of Mr. Douglas aud his friend.!, the Ful lowing tit bile" from trio Washington Constitution would set those doubts at rest. We quote: One thing, nevertheless, seems to be very decisively determined uaniely, that the person whose pertinacious partisans have caused all tbe difficulty at Charleston, cannot possibly be nominated for the Presidency as the candidate of a National Democratic Convention. ',,., The idea that the great Democratic party of th,o country Ihe party which has done so much in the past and has mo many luight promises in the future is to be sacrificed ! to the seljitsh ambition of one man, is too absurd and preposterous to be entertained for a moment. - 8 Let our friends everywhere be of good ! cheer, and with a hearty good will go to ! work to correct the errors and mistakes which have brought us to the very verge of ruin. Let selfishness be rebuked, an-i nam- I glorious boaUing be made to hide in shame and mortification. For ourselves, thouch we sympathize duly with those who look upon the eventful oc curi ences of the day trith concern und solicitude, we mucit Shy we have no shade ol distrust that a good Democrat will be elect ed to tbe Chief Magistracy as suiely as November shall come. Tlie Couimmt Fleas Hill Aaaalled. Judge Nnylor of Ciawforde'viHe writes to ' the Journal of thut .lacei, that he iii.ul.ts tlie coiistittitionality of the bill of the ho.1 Legislature reconstructini; tbe Ooinmon Picas Court, because the bill eent to the Qovenior was Telootl, ami never passed over the j veto. It was objected to because tour connties yere not ipcluded in an district, and I when sent hack was only amended without being passed over ilie veto. This, Mr. Naylor conten.i!, invalidates tlie act. Tlie ijuestion is likely to make some trouble Wo suspect. A 1.0NHON journal says that Lord Palmer Eton rode on horseback to Dansbtiry (Ki miles) the other morning, saw Mainstoae (tbe horee he has entered for tlie Derby) gallop, then cantered back to Broad lands, bad out another horse after luncheon, aud ; rode all over the estate pretty well for a man of 75.

The Southern Indianim ot Gibson county, noticing the deposit made, in the corner stone of the new Journal building, says: " Reneath one corner a box was deposited, and in it were placed, among other things, capita of the speeches of O. P. Morton, Hon. V. H. Seward, Carl Schurz, and other Republican documents. We tremble for the fate of Indiana when we think of this. Should Republicanism finally prevail, aud the Lord destroy us as a wicked and perverse generation, tbe future historian as he exhumed these Republican speeches would peruse them as the sad relics of the dark ages. And as he stands like Gibbon looking over the ruios of a great nation he could see in these speeches the cause of the decline aud fall of the Empire of Indiana.
