' I Business was absolutely brought to , sclose. Some little stir was visible on the j parture of the Dunbar, and a larj-e crowd i jseinbled to see the clown connected with j palding's Circus float Oown the river in a j ash tub, to wbicb Tour geese were awtteii- , J.but beyond these events, things were ex- j raordinarily quiet. One of the most amusing wagers we ever heard of was in Chi'cago on the day before the municipal election in that city. The Buffalo Republic Bays : A bet was made between a Water street merchant and Ned O.sborne, of the Tremout HouseLthe largest wgar and tobacco dealer "in the "city, and was to the effect that if ' Wentwortli was not elected, Osborne should have the privilege of kickmg the Water street merchant aforesaid from the Tremout House to Springer street. The day aflor the election, the merchant I having lout, he came to Osborne's store, and ; presented his person to him for the contcniS plated kicks, and demanded that Osborne 1 should take the stakes. Osloriie had been training his right leg all the previous day, and had armed his foot with n heavy cowhide boot, with soles as thick as two chipboards. The merchant started up by tlm ! Tremout, Oslioriie delivering a heavy kict as he started, but drew back his foot wit!: a f gpas'iiodie action and paroxysm of cotmteI nance absolutely pitiful. I He tried another one, but thelooer llinched not, and kept ou his way undisturbed by f the volley he had received. The remitl of this was worse than the first, and he fairly I curled up on the ground and howled with pain. Tlie merchant stopped ana calmly inquired, "Who don't you take the stakes?" "What have you got iu the Iwseniontof your pants?" cried Ned. "Milwaukee bricks ' shouted the merchant, "and we arn't vvithiu a mile of Springer street yet." OsUirne subsided, paid the campagne, and has been wearing a list slipper ever since. BsSomebody has been quoting the fan'iliar line "The post of honor is it private station," as JefTersonian. A correspondent of the Philadelphia Press says : The lines in question ere to le found in the tragedy of " Cato," Act IV, Scene 4. Cato has just learned the death of his son Marcus, at which he rejoices, for it occurred when punishing treason, moralizes upon the decadence of liberty at Home, and complains that every success is Cupar's, lie makes up bis mind tJ die by his own hand, rather than yield to the conqueror, and advises his surviving son, Portius, to retire from the turmoil of public life : "My son, thou oft has seen Thy sire engaged in a corrupted state, Wrestling with vice and faction; now thou seest me Spent, overpowered, despairing of success: Let me. advise thee to retreat IxHimes To thy paternal scat, the Sabine field, Where the great Ciesar toiled with h'u own hands, And all our frugal ancestors were blest In humble virtues, and a rural Hie. There live retired, urav for the peace of Rome ; Content thyself In lie securely Rood. When viie prevails and impious men bear sway, The post of honor is the private station."
