THURSDAY MORNING... MAT 3 Opposition State Ticket. FOB GOVERNOR, HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. FOR SECRKTART OF STATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of IUmlolpli. FOR TUKA8UREK OP STATU, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clnrke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SCPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. Other Appointment. In Addition to the appointments of Cot. Henry S. Lane, published in another part of this paper, be ("peaks at Princeton, on Thursday, May 3, lit 1 p. m. Vincennes, on Friday, May 4, at 2 p. m. Col. T. A. Hendricks will accompany him and participate in the discussions. We hope the people in those localities will give these gentlemen good audiences. 8gt,The Enquirer of Tuesday, 1n 'an article on the Congressional nomination, remarks : .... "The people will look to that Convention the Princeton for a candidate who is not one thing to one man and quite another thing to another; but they will expect a man who is able and willing to conduct the canvass upon bold Democratic principles. It is due to the Democracy of the Gibralter district to have such a man in Congress, and it is to be hoped that such a one may be nominated." We are puzzled to know whom our neighbor ia hitting with that kind of talk. , Let us see: Law? No. Hover? Certainly not Miller? Think not Gavitt? Rather guess not. Shanklin ? : Calculate not. Niblack ? It can't be possible I Who can he mean ? Our neighbor says something about " Democratic principles." We should like to know what Democratic principles are. Can the Enquirer inform us? Has the editor read the Charleston dispatches ' for " a week back ?" If so, how does he like 'em ? They Ratify " in a Horn." The Douglas wing ot the Democratic party in Randolph county met at Wincbesterou Saturday for the purpose of ratifying the nomination of the " Little Giant," which they supposed would be made on Friday. The nomination not being made, of course they didn't ratify it. - The chairman of the County Central Committee declared he would never ratify snch a nomination. Douglas might be selected twenty times over by the Charleston Convention, but he would never vote for him. ' He was at the head of the party in Randolph, and would do what he could, always, against Douglas. The "ratification" meeting broke up in a decidedly bad humor. InJ. Jour. Here, we learn the powder is all ready to ratify, but the nomination hasn't "gone off," neither has the gun. The Democratic brotherhood look glum. The Journal telegraphic dispatches are looked for every morning pretty much as the expected news of the death of some sick friend is dreaded. The Democratic " sick SiU " at Charleston is " getting no better fiist." He has the yellow fever, and will soon go into the black vomit. Hon. Thomas Corwin. Mr. John D. Defrees, writing from Washington City to the Indianapolis Journal, April 25ih, gives a merited eulogy of Hon. Thomas Corwin. He asks why it is that Mr. Corwin is not talked of for the Presidency. He then vindicates him from the absurd prejudice existing against him on account of bis Mexican War speech, in the following terms : Here is a man of acknowledged superierity, of patriotism, of statesmanship, o high moral character, and yet he is not named. Why not? Hecau.se, it is said, he cannot le elected. Why not, again ? The people would not vote for him, it is said because, in the grandest and most eloquent speech in the English language, he proclaim ed that "if I were a Mexican, as 1 am an American, I would greet the itivmlcta of my country with bloody hands and hospitable graves." Where the ovaven wretch who would not thus Uat'eud his native soil ? And yet, in this model Republic, in this enlightened nineteenth century, where we xot so in.u.ct of our capability of governng ourselves, we refuse to vote IbrtbQ.nmn pr president who proclaimed only thut rhich is regarded, the brigh'.cst inspiratiou patriotism, the defense of one's own soil ! If the nation could only have the wisdom elect such a man to the Presidency, we hould have an administration worthy the est days of the Republic. fey A correspondent of Hie. I ml i. ma hrmer wishes to purchase a fruit farm near me good sized town. He wants from uU 75 acres at $30 to $35 per acre, and intends to raise fruits aud berries. Tho editor of the -J'atVK recommends several cities in the State which would furpsh, a good market, but overlooks Evansvlle. This is one of the bst places in the Slate, for, the purpose. The person wishing to buy the farm is named V. R. Stoucb. He lives iu Circle? ville, Pickaway co., Ohio. HaT" The Enquirer says the Opposition, were humiliated at the decided success of the Democratic Champion over Col. Lane last Saturday evening. Oh, yes, certainly. They feci so much humiliated, I bit they would like to witness just such "easy vie. tories " over Col. Lane every week from now until theOciolier election. It was a. lyrhus victory. A lew more such would be the death of Col. Hendricks. Col. Lane can make votes, right along, ail the lime, by such victories. He dou't want any thing better than to be defeated like he was (in the Enquirer's estimation) Saturday night. fclrThere is only one telegraphic w ire from Charleston northward, and this is in biilliciciil to actotomodalM all the business. Ileuce, occasionally lull reports anj uui reeived promptly. i
Something to Do. Of all the miserable misanthropic, complaining creatures who ;
walk the litce of the earth (and there arc a great many more than is at all agreeable to the rest of mankind), be who has "nothing to do" is most to be pitied. We would net bo that man, could we walk on velvet, and drink from gold, for the remainder of our days ! Nothing to do but to nurse his aches and pains nothing to do but to pick out nil his neighbor's faults, and discover thorns where other people see only roses. Young man, if yon would ascertain the secret of happiness, find something to do, and set a'KHit it as if you meant it. No nu-t er what digging dirt is an honorable occupation if it is houorably pursued. Nobody knows until he has tried it what a blessing hard work may be made not mere bone and muscle work, but that generous, hearty exertion which enlists mind and body alike, and leaves its happy influence on them both. Are you at the foot of life's ladder ! it will help you to reach the top. Are you tired, or weary, of heart-sick ? it is the best medicine you can apply to the sore spot.-r-Find something to do, and do it with all the energy of your natnre. No one ever obtained a prize worth having without working for it either by the head or by hand. If you want to obtain the full stature of manhood, don't sit with folded bands, waiting for laggard opportunity, but go to work and make a career for yourself. You will succeed if you start in tfic right spirit. lAfe Illuttrated. NEW AD V ERTISEMENT. nfCECRE AM ! ICE CREAM!! rjfHK fW" EBHMUJS'K Ml Wll I.
