Gillum, Hartford, Neptune, St. Louis, Moses McLellan, Mem., Peytona, New Orleans. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was very pleasant. The air was warm, and the sky cloudless. ......<Business> was somewhat limited. ......<Freights> were scarcer than ordinary, while boats were plenty. No change in rates to New Orleans has taken place. ......The <River> continues to recede, as do all of its tributaries. ......The <Silver Star> and <Bowen> left yesterday at 12 o'clock, and when last we saw them, were steaming it down the river at a rate that would astonish a locomotive. They are about as swift crafts as skim the Western waters. ......The <Gillum> and <Greenville> both departed at their advertised hour. ......The world-renowned <Dunbar> is the mail packet to-day for Paducah and all way points. She is under the command of Capt. Fowler, as popular a boatman as ever walked a hurricane roof; while Gas. Dusouchet, equally clever, will be found in the office. The popularity of her officers and the quality of her fare ought to insure the <Dunbar> a magnificient [sic] trip. ......The <Peytona>, from Louisville, arrived yesterday morning, and remained during the day receiving freight. She took on a large quantity and departed during the night. ......The <Union> arrived from Bowling Green on Monday night. Mr. Jenkins, her gentlemanly clerk, will accept our thanks for a manifest of her trip. Receipts by River. FROM BOWLING GREEN, Pea Stkamb Union. 20 bhds tobacco, 1. A. Crane; 4 hhds tobacco, John 8. K. SHRADER, Ag't. ======= Death of Lawrence Johnson, Esq. Lawrence Johnson, Esq., the well known type founder and stereotyper, died of paralysis at two o'clock, Thursday, at his residence at Eighth and Pine streets. Mr. Johnson appeared to be in his usual health on Tuesday morning, and in the afternoon of that day he was taken ill while attending a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Green and Coates Streets Railway Company. He was taken home and died, as we have already said. Mr. Johnson was about sixty years of age at the time or his death. He was an Englishman by birth, and he emigrated to this country when quite a young man. In partnership with Mr. Smith, the father of his late partner, he purchased the stereotype foundry of Binney & Ronaldson, on the extinguishment of that firm, and the house of L. Johnson & Co. has been for many years the leading establishment in the country for the supply, not only of type, stereotype plates, electrotype, &c., but of every other article of Printer's findings. Johnson & Co. had a branch establishment at Cincinnati, and their business was as widely spread as the Union. Mr. Johnson was also active in private enterprises. He owned Sansom Street Hall, and much other valuable property, and he was also largely interested in the City Railway enterprises. He was very wealthy at the time of his death, and his success in life is attributable to his industry and strict integrity. The deceased suffered a severe blow in the recent death of his eldest daughter, the wife of the Rev. Mr. Wylie. This sad event is believed to have hastened his own departure.—<Philadelphia Bulletin>. We had the pleasure of Mr. Johnson's acquaintance, having dealt with him for several years. He was a man of kind heart, pure tastes, strict integrity, unsullied mercantile honor, and Christian deportment. By dint of industry, perfect knowledge of his business, and honorable dealing, he built up a business which was highly successful, and beneficial to the interests of the "Art Preservative." Mr. Johnson has done much in bringing it to its present perfection. ———<>——— RiisTho Supreme Cottrt of Mississippi has atlirmed the validity of the law making it jienal for retailers to sell liquor to a drunken man, and declaring that the owner of the establishment is resionsible for the act of his bar-keejer on his behalf. FhkI'Khick: Do' CbAS having been . refused a puitsjtort to enable him- to visit Paris, by Mr. Dallas, the American Minister at London, on the ground that the United- Sink's do not recognize persons of color as citizen the required jiormissiop, wsis furnished by the French Consul at ..Newcastle.
