Wabash, St. Cloud, Pittsburg, Emma, Pittsburg. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was cold and cloudy. In the morning a cold drizzling rain set in, but soon ceased. ......The <River> continued to recede during the day. It is also falling rapidly at other points above and below......The Wabash is also falling rapidly, and there is danger of navigation becoming obstructed some time before all the corn is transported from the country along its banks. <Freights, which were quite plentiful three days ago are becoming, somewhat scarce.— The rates to New Orleans are, on tobacco, $4 per hhd; corn, 25c per sack; flour, 37 1/2c per bbl; pork and lard 50c per bbl; whisky, 60c per bbl; pound freights, 20c per 100 pounds. ......The fleet <Charley Bowen> will be at the landing to-day to receive passengers and freight for all points below on the Ohio. Capt. Dexter and Clerk Markall will be ready to receive passengers and freight. The <Bowen> leaves punctually at 12 o'clock. Shippers should have their freight on hand in time. ......The <Silver Star>, owing to the trouble experienced in fixing the crank on her wheel, did not get off until half past eight o'clock on Sunday night. She will hardly be able to make the trip in time to depart to-day at her usual hour, though she may do so. ......The <Pacific> was at the landing all day Sunday, receiving freight. She took on about 800 tons, and left yesterday forenoon. ......The <Baltic> was with us all day yesterday, and completed her cargo at this point. ......The steamer <W. V. Gillum>, arrived last night from Hartford, with 63 hhds tobacco. She will leave this evening for Cromwell. Persons desiring to ship freight or go themselves, would do well to ship on her. She is commanded by Capt. W. H. Miller, who is both energetic and accommodating, and is fast gaining a reputation as a steamboatman. ......The <Kate Sarchet> took on nearly 100 bbss of salt yesterday, and departed for the Wabash, taking a barge fin tow, winch she intends loading with corn. ......The <Argyle> also completed her load here, making three large boats that we have furnished with large quantities of freight during the past two days. ......The <Bowling Green> has been tied up by the Sheriff. The suit was brought, we are told, by the engineers. ......The popular <Greenville> shoves out to-day for all points on Green River. Capt. Humphreys, a veteran boatman, and Mr. McCracken, an accomplished and affable clerk, will be found on board to look after the safety and comfort of passengers. ......Capt. ZACH TAYLOR, the good looking clerk of the <Lue Eaves>, starts for Lawrenceburgh this morning on a matrimonial tour. We shall congratulate his intended, if Zack makes as good a husband as he does steamboat Clerk. ......The <Diana> having a new shaft placed on board, leaves Louisville for New Orleans on Monday next. ......The <Altoma> passed up yesterday. She goes to Pittsburg, where her machinery is to be transferred to a new boat. ......The <Sam Kirkman> came in collision with one of the piers of the bridge at Clarksville, and knocked her chimneys overboard. Her texas was also demolished. Masonic Gem Sunk. TERRE HAUTE, April 29th. REPORTER JOURNAL:—The steamer <Masonic Gem> sunk last night about ten miles above this place. She was loaded down to the guards with corn, and we were getting down the river finely, when she struck a hidden snag, or rock, and sunk in about six feet water. The corn was all consigned to your commission merchants. The following is the rnanifest of the trip: 1,413 sks corn, P. G. O'Riley & Co.; 1,898 sks corn, 10 bbls flour, Brown & Aikman. There will be about 1,000 sacks of the corn damaged, but fully covered by insurance. The bout is lying in a good condition, and can be easily raised when the river falls. No insurance on the boat. Respectfully J. P. MCDONALD. Antio,i?itv ok Padulk-Whkkls. Paddlewheels are mentioned by Yitiuvius, who states that even in his time ail record of the uaruecf their inventor hait Lom tost. Protestor Pancirolle, of Fadua, saw (about 1857) on Koiiiho cains representations of war ships, each furuished with three paddlewheels on either side, to be pet in motion by bullocks; such war vessels the Romans are said to have used during their first war against Carthage. Between 1087 and Gi3 I'riuce Kupert possessed a paddle-wheel boat in London, which was moved by horses ; and about the same period the French engineer, Dugnet, was trying experiments at Havre and Marseilles with vessels of a similar description. - Canal RecelpCs. The Daily News' city article says : In accordance with the anticipation expressed yesterday, the whole of the million and a half of notes which were lately withdrawn from the Pank of England and locked up by discount firms, were this day restored to that establishment. The funds were favorably affected by the easier appearance of the money market, and in the afternoon a stimulus was given by the announcement of the restoratiou of the missing mass of currency to its ac customed resting place, coupled with a re port that a considerable amount of gold had been sent into bunk, and an advance of per cent was finally established. 1 lie supply or money lo-day was most liberal. The best short paper was discounted at 4j5 er cent. The demand was moderate, the improvement in exchange having caused a cessation of the demand for gold for the continent. 95,000 of" the '129,000 by the Suffolk was this day sent into bank.
