, Curretpotulenct Philadelphia North American. Judge McLean. I Washington, April 12. 18C0. It is quite evident, from the tone of tin f correspondence here, within the hist few . days, that an important and extensive re-ac-ticn has commenced among the more n.l- ' VHnced wing of the Republican party, in regaid to the Presidency, and that, the movement in behalf of Judge Mcl-eau is assuming the most imposing proportions. Letters from the interior of Pennsylvania hold but one language on this subject, and that is of the most decided confidence as to success. Those from New Jersey, Indiana and the eastern States, breathe the same spirit, and the conviction is spreading far and wide that he is not only the man for the crisi3, but the one of all others whoso nomination will make our triumph sure and conclusive. Without such a name, and even if it were practicable to carry the Presidency, the House of Representatives might be lost, localise the fact is not to be disguised that the Opposition now hold many districts in Pennsylvania and other States which they
could not expect to redeem under ordinary circumstances, which may or may not be re-m-peated. Hence it is of the first consequence that the candidate at Chicago should occupy such a position before the country as to give strength to the local as well as the national ticket. The change of opinion here among public men is quite as marked us in the country. They are sensitive to the lirst touch of the popular current, aud it is manifest from the expression now, that if the Convention were to meet immediately, Judge McLean would be spontaneously nominated. The feeliu has undoubtedly extended to b lnrge number of Ihe delegates who will attend the Baltimore Convention. They desire success, and are ready to ot-opcrale with the Republicans upon any fair ami reasonable basis. Looking tosuch concert an ftlV.xt will be made to bring forward Judge ill-Loan, without any platform but the Constitution mid I'uion, which is consistent with his whole public life, uud services. Should this purpose succeed, it would convey no intimation to Chicago that could not properly be disregarded though one hVtioti tln-re might le disposed to reject it as an alleged attempt at dictation. That unjust assumption might easily tie disjiosed !', for if certain candidates are to be set aside, merely lecause of their ability to attract support which others cannot do, the Republicans would sot n find themselves in a select minority, to w hich few would lie willing to seek admission. If the radical Republicans prefer defeat to victory, iiisist ujhiii au extreme, man, and reject every overture for conciliation, they will find themselves abandoned by the great conservative vote, which really holds the
f balance ut' power in at least six free Slates, i and tie so Ut )ly beaten, Wsid-'s, tlmt the par- '. I ty w'" have no national existence the day ' utter the election. . The last and most d.-s-perate slruggle is fast approaching, and unI other triumph of democracy will compel the dissolution of present political lies, and the i necessity of a new organization, just as the I repeal of the Missouri Compromise brought I the Republican party into existence. rriieceit.su oriiicu.

A letter of the New Vt;rk JItialU from the coast of Africa states that a littltimore clipper-built hermaphrodite brig, with a cargo of slaves, was recently pursued by the Ui itish steamer l!loufetrr and the - l'oilugue .c steamer Tayu. The latter fired on her just about dark with several thirty-two pounders, carrying away her foremast and jibImiim. The slaver, however, continued on, and ran directly on the rocks oil' Cape , Lobe., and immediately became a wreck. As she struck, and was overwhelmed by the breakers, the poor wretched on board, probably to the number of live hundred, set up a howl of despair that could be heard alxive the roar of the hungry tea. But it wus too dark by that l ime, to see much, and lieyoud human skill to aid Ihein, .so llnti. they must have met their doom, for on the next morning the bench inside the rocks was strewn with corpses and fragments ot the wreck.
