in journal. EVANSVILUr, IND WEDNESDAY MORNING APRIL 25 Opposition State Ticket. J"OR KVERROR, HENRY S. LANK, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne:. FOR SECRETARY OK STATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of UnJol.li. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S.HARVEY, of Clarke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, . --ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of VwderVurgh. FOB REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT. BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. Public Speaking. Our renders in Rockport, Newburgbi Evansville, Mount Vernon, and New Harmon, will please bear in mind tue appointments of Col. Henry S. Lane, published on the tuird page of the Daily, aud give him good audiences. It is desired that the Opposition here will bear in mind and remind others, of the appointment of Col. Lane at (Jeorge Dannn's, in German township, at 1 o'clock, on Saturday afternoon next, and at the Court House in this city in the evening of the same day at early gas-lighting. Let the house be crowded. Col. Thomas A. Henokk ks, the Democratic nominee for Governor, will be present, and participate in the discussions. Both are able men, and their discussions will form the ground-work uf the contest in this State. So every man who desires to vote understandingly, should by all nutans hear these champions. Other Appointment!. In addition to the appointments of Col. Henry S. Lane, published in another part of this paper, he speaks at Princeton on Thursday, May 3, at I p. it.; at Vincennes, on Friday, May 4, at 2 p. m.; anil at Sullivan, on Saturday, May C, at 1 p. M. Col. T. A. Hendricks will accompany him andparticipate in the discussions. We hope the people in tho.se localities will give these gentlemen good audience. Judge Mel. can. If the Commercial were deliberately intent upon procuring the nomination of Judge McLean, ut Chicago, probably it culd take no more effective course to ai coiuplisli its object than by publishing peteoudi assaults upon that distinguished jurist, and by permitting its correspondents to assert that he could not carry the .State of Ohio. The Republicans of this State will support the Chicago nominee, and the other branch of the Opposition will do the same, if Judge McLean is the man. Ohio would give him 25,000 majority, and Indiana from 5,000 to 10,000. The allegation that he has not Knon ei ry n , t t- i. Tr i 1 i i i o 1 1 u! ripa 1 1 . . Vi it o uinii WLLII L II k 1 V , i H"- n LI I j .-III', k Ilk I J . I ' II on the bench, is very true, nor will candid and sensible people regard that as a tact at all to his discredit but iust the reverse. His political opinions have never been in doubt. If he is nominated, it will be iu obedience to an earnest demand of the people, and not from the intrigues or shrewd management of professional politicians. That element will undoubtedly be primarily against hiin. Mere groundless abuse will certainly not diminish popular attachment to it man so universally esteemed ; and least of all dues it come with a good grace from hi9 immediate neighbors, who know the purity ot Judge McLean's character, both in public and private life. Vin. Gazette. The Oazette, in this matter, is perfectly correct. Indeed the course of that paper in setting fbrtu the prospects and eligibility of the various Presidential candidates who are likely to come before the Chicago Conven tion, has been eminently sensible, impartial, and serviceable to the cause which it advocates. That paper has permitted all sides to have a fair hearing in its columns; and when the nomination is made, that paper and the New York Tribune, and other papers which have spoken frankly their prelereneea, and the advantages of some candidates and disadvantages of others, will receive the thanks of the whole Opposition party. It is just as necessary to have a fair and full understanJiny in thee mutters, as in business affairs. Thereby, much hard feeling, and perhaps serious ditliculties, are obviated. Had these discussions taken place as fully in 1S."G as now, Judge McLean might have been nominated ami elected. As it was, the Radicals insisted on pursuing their extreme course; they spumed couservative couusels; they gained their point, and were defeated. It is hoped that they have learned a valuable lesson, aud that they will profit by it. The Conservatives in Southern Indiana are and have been in favor of Judge Hates for President, becaus-; he i.-. yo gel thau Judge McLean, and Ii:ls more physical igor; because he has more recently placed himself on tbu record ou the living quuslioiis of public policy ; and because there is a reluctance to deprive the Supreme Bench of Judge McLeau's inestimable services. But the Conservatives throughout the Slate do not wish to tie considered unreasonable. They are not blindly wedded to one man to the exclusion of all others. They have no favorite caudidati in their own Slate whose cause they advocate, and are therefore disinterested, and desirous only of getting a safe, national, Constitution-abiding man, who can be elected. If they caniioiget their Jirtl rhoice, Edward Bates, they will be perfectly MSftSlS with Judge McLean, and will go in for his election with enthusiasm, it' it is thought, on an exchange of views at Chicago, that he is I be stronger man of the two. Judge McLean, as t he Qm tittmft, can carry I a. liana by from 5,000 to lit, 000 majority over all opositiou. The people at this State kneno him to be riyht ; they know his integrity and his purity ot ch.trai ier, uud they feel assured that his election uonld be the salvation of the fowtrj tr.,ui its present dangers.
Give us, in this battle-ground of the contest of 1860 Southern Indiana either Edward Bates or John McLean, with some
good man for Vice President from the opposite section of the Union to the one tbe nominee for President lives in aud no Third Party ticket can got a thousand votes in the State. Radicals and Conservatives will work side by side for the Chicago nominee, and the Champion of the Charleston Convention (the strongest man they can put up) will have a neck-and neck race, giving the United Opposition the benefit of the immense majorities of Northern and Central Indiana. If Douglas should be defeated at Charleston, or nominated on a pro-slavery or doubtful platform, Judge Bates or Judge McLean could carry Southern Indiana. What more is needed or desired? The path of duty is apparent and the way to victory plain. Correspondents of the Indiana Jour. nal, writing from Washington, give the following items : Mr. Ike Cook, of Chicago, is here. He is the bitter enemy of Douglas, and, it is said, threatens to publish at Charleston, certain letters from Douglas to leading Republicans of Illinois, proposing to be a Republican, if permitted to be re-elected to the Senate without Republican opposition. If there are any such letters iu existence, aud are published, we may look for a ' glorious row." There is some talk here, already, of taking up some man whose name will not be before the Convention as a candidate in the first instance. Of course no man can tell the result. I stick to my prediction .hat Gen. Lane will be the one " struck by lightning." Joe Lane is active amoDg his friends, and should Douglas fail to secure the nomination, will occupy a prominent position before the Convention. He keeps his rooms at Brown's Hotel open to delegates, whom he receives with unaffected Western cordiality, and his whisky is said to be smooth and genial. "Beau Hickman," a celebrated Washington character, says "Gen Lane run opposition to Brown's bar all last Sunday." There are some doubts expressed as to Lane's eligibility to the Presidency, but, they are perhaps not well founded. If he should be nominated they will doubtless be made public. The Douglas men offer higher prices for votes than the friends of any other candidates. More Foreign Missions, Cabinet Appointments, Marshalships, and, 111 short, more "old clothes" of all sorts have been promised than can be found in the Presidential wardrobe for a hundred years. The Crops. Our reports from every part Of the State speak most favorably of the appearance of the wheat. In this county we never had abetter prospect for an abundant yield. The frail so far is uninjured, and even the peaches what few trees we havtt left from the severe winters in former years are safe. Tbe crop of apples will be, from present indications, enormous. The late rains are bi ingingout. the grass, and the whole country as far as our observation extends, looks like the labor of tbe hnsbandman was to be bountifully rewarded. Indian a pot is Sen tintl. JBei" In regard to the late difticulty between Robert J. Walker and Attorney General Black, oftsfa'aj from the Uuclninaa letter, it is said that Mr. Ulaek has stated that he knew of no cause wlir r. Walker should invite him out of the district to fight , a duel, even if he was not conscientiously opposed to that modeof adjusting difHculties.
