The Weather, Saturday, was nitty with indications of rain daring the middle of the day, but in the afternoon aud evening the atmosphere became quite oool and pleasant. The River at this point was on a stand. We fear however the severe rain of Friday hi.-l. will cause it to again continence swelling. Already the bottom lands are inundated. Fields that hail been cleansed and once plowed are now a vast sheet of water, which will deposit timber and brush, which will have to be removed before the laud can be rendered serviciibli . Business ou the levee was rather dull. Some considerable stir was occasioned by tha departure of the Silver Star and Charley Jiowen, but the greater portion of the day things were unusually quiet. Freights are scarce. Rates have not changed . The Bowling Green arrived yesterday evening with 28 hhds of tobacco, a lot of chickens, &c. The Masonic Clem arrived Saturday night from Cincinnati with her guards partly buried in the water. She had one of the finest loads for the Wabash we ever eaw depart for that stream. She was to ascend the Wabash as far as Attica. The Bowling Green is the swift (Jreen River packet to-day. Those having freight to points on that river will please bear the BowlingGreen in mind. The Charley Bowen left at noon with one of the best trips of the season. Considerable of her cargo was through freight. The G ilium arrived unloaded and departed on Saturday with a lair load down aud a light trip out. The Freestone was due Saturday with a good load. The Wabash boats that will be in duriug this week, will once mote cover oar landing with freight, and otter a rich harvest to two or three New Orleans boats. The Glendale pawed up at 5 o'clock in the morning. She and the Slur had quite atrial of speed just above Smithlaud, but the Glendate after a long and laborious struggle came out victor. The Silver Star arrived in the (nothing with a light trip of passengers and freight. She departed at 12 o'clock for 1'a lucah, carrying the mail. The Autocrat will be due from New Orleans to-day. We presume she will proceed to Louisville. The fine packet, Dunbar, under command of dipt. Fowler, -will be the only certain packet south to-day. She is furnished with all the luxuries that render steamboat traveling so attractive, in the charge of earful and accommodating officers, and is the very boat ou which pflssenpTs going south ought to lake passing. Clerk Dpsencbet will take pleasure in registering their names. From a private dispatch to Capt. I. G. 0' Riley, we learn that the Magnolia was to leave Faducah yesterday, and will be in our city to-'!ay, anxious to swallow up all the freight t!mt may be on the landing. The hue Eaves arrived Saturday night with 32 hhds of tobacco. She left for Ashhysburg for wnother load yesterday. She expects to be at the landing to day, to receive freight tor South Carrol ton. At Casey ville aud other places on the lower Ohio, the water invaded the streets and compelled the people to go about in boats. Should the river rise still higher, the damage to property must le very considerable. Viuceuntt Corrtspouilence. Vijjcenn-es, April 21st, 1800. Editors Journal : Wuhash river rose 22 inches in past 48 liuura, and is now rising at the rate of inch per hour. There are now lt feet full in the channel. Heavy rain yesterday. Passed down, Kate Surehel. Passed np, John Tompkins. Nolhiug has lieen heard of the Freestone yet. The river is now within 5 feet of bigfa water mark. W. 11. W. ICet-etpfa by llntlroail. A Washi.voton correspondent ot the New York Times writes: The nomination of Douglas would knock Seward seriously on the head, and probably settle the case against him at Chicago. In that event the chances would set strongly in favor of Bates or McLean. The latter would probably prove the stronger man. He could scarcely fail of an election, even aguiost Douglas. The cooler headed Republicans see this clearly, and greatly prefer to contemplate I he piclure, to the one of doubt and defeat which the nomination of u distinctive Republican, partienlarly Seward, w ould present. BQa,. Tin: Klkhorn Mill, which was destroyed by fire about two weeks ago, is to lie rebuilt. The citizens have tendered the proprietors $2,500 to help rebuild, and the work is to be soon commenced.
