EVANSVILLE, IND. FRIDAY MORNING.. .APRIL 20 Opposition State Ticket. 'fob governor, HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. FOR SECRETARY OF STATK, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of Randolph. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S.HARVEV, of Clarke. Jfor auditor of state, ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR attorney general, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. Tfor reporter of supreme court, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUDLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHEU, of Putnam. Common Pleas Judge. The Enquirer of yesterday furnishes us with some highly intelligent and liberal views in regard to the Judgeship of the Common Pleas Court. The substance of a half column article ou the subject is contained in the following " the Democracy have the votes and outhi to have the office.'' We are learning for Ihe first time that Dem ocracy is the only test for the responsible '' office of Common Please Judge. We are far from believing that Democracy is a disqualification for the Judgeship; but we certainly do not believe that it is the only qualification for that position. We published on Wednesday a letter, signed by almost the entire Bar of the District, calling upon Judge Pitcher to become a candidate. None are more interested in having an able and honest jurist on the Beucb than attorneys, and no clas3 of the people are better able to judge of the merits of the person who should fill the place than they. With great unanimity, the attorneys ot the District have decided upon Judge Pitcher's qualifications and fitness for the position. We certainly cannot conceive how political considerations could have influenced their choice, when we see the call headed by Judge Hovey, and signed by Messrs. Denby, Shanklin, and, we believe, everj Democratic lawyer in the District with perhaps oue or two exceptions. We are not informed what are the present political views of Judge Pitcher. Wo know that, years ago, when he was younger and may have had some political aspirations, he was a Whig ; but for several years past, during the late re-organization of parties . he has, by the choice of the people, occupied the Common Pleas bench, aud, like a pure and impartial Judge, has withdrawn himself from political discussions and party associations. But whatever may be his political views, they have been, and so long as he remains on the Bench will continue to be, his private opinions; and we are certain they will not obtrude themselves into political discussions or the administration of justice. Certain are we, that they will not make him a whit less au able lawyer and impartial judge. For perhaps forU years he ha-i been a close student of the law and a successful practitioner, aud no one will doubt his entire fitness tor the position. The Enquirer says the Democratic Delegates to the Princeton Convention will nominate a candidate "who will quietly lay Judge Pitcher on the shelf,' and mentions Judge Moore and Messrs. M. S. Johnsou ami Ben. Stinson. We are informed, ou very good authority, that Judge. Moore does not design to be a candidate ; this was the understanding when the letter to .Judge Pitcher was signed. As for Mr. Johnson, it is news to us that he is a Democrat. If such is the case, new light must lately have burst upon his political vision; hut however that may be, we d'j not think h will leave a lucrative practice- for the Ueueh of the Corumou Pleas, and he certainly would not prove treat-herons to his pledge to Judge Pitcher. Wh ilid'aol know that H r. Stiuson was a professional lawyer until we were led to make the enquiry after his anriiiiincuraeiit as a candidate. He is an excellent J ustice of the Peace, and was an accommodating Postmaster; but we conceive the qualifications for those positions and that of Judge of the Uomtuon Pleas Court, are xmiteichat different. We should be sorry to lose the services of Mr. Stioson as an Esquire, and should still more rogret to see him crowd Judge Pitcher from the Bench. There is too much of the "Young America ' in that, even for this fast age.———<>——— THE TORNADO.—The Terre Haute papers j give additional particulars of the tornado. The amount of damage done the E. & C. R. R. is not as large as at first supposed. One house, with a family in it, was carried bodily some thirty feet. None of the inmates were hurt. A house was blown down, and a Mrs. Reagan killed, near St. Mary's, west of the city. The husband and children were much injured. A dwelling was struck by lightning, near Terre Haute, but no person was injured. The path of the whirlwind was only about one hundred yards wide. The E. & C. R. R. engine house is a complete wreck. Part of the roof was blown half a mile. The damage in the country to trees and fences is great. A public meeting has been called for the. relief of the suffering. The person killed, Michael Kuhardt, was buried on the 17th by the German Benevolent Society. ———<>——— Ckanbkhiiiks. The Boston 'oft says the I cranberry fever still rages at Cape Cod, ami ; the people have entered into their spring ; work of cranberry planting. Nearly every ! piece of marsh, swamp, or upland, which j can be made available for its culture, have been secured by capitalists, and are now i being speedily transformed into rich and i valuable cranberry meadows. ilfayTwo $ j'J script bills, of the issue of 184o, bearing six per cent, interest, were recently returned to Fletcher's Bank, fndi.napolis: from Xew York.
Varieties. Henry Wilson, while hunting, in Randolph county, Ala., recently shot at a bird and killed one of his negroes, a faithful slave, worth 2,000. Js-jyTbe Evansville Jomrmml talks joyously of the prospects and prosperity of that place, as it well may. There is not a match for Evansville in energy and enterprise in the State. Indinnnjiolis lotirnnl. Accommodation Train. We understand that an accommodation train will b placed on the O. k. M. R. R., between this point ami Seymour leaving every morning at t:30. Vin. Sun. Flush Times. The New Orleans Delia says there is a plethora of money, an epidemic of extravagance, and a tendency to luxury in that city. It saw a small lot of strawberries, about two quarts, sell for $1 1, and cauliflowers Car $2.50 apiece. Fire in Sullivan County. Ou the l:ith, the township school-house in the village of Linton, Sullivan county, was burned. It had recently been erected, at a cost of $00,
by subscription, and will be a serious loss to that community. THE bowlder encountered, a few days since, at the artesian boring at the Asylum, is still iu the way, and the progress of the work is, consequently, slow. It sinks in the clay before the instruments, and will not likely be got out of the way until it rests on a hard bed so that it can be drilled through or broken up.—<State Sent>. Mr. Pbyor, engaged in the present diffi culty with Mr. Potter at Washington, oas a wife and five children in that city. Potter is a native of Maine, and has a wife also residing at the Capital. She is alio, says she wishes to know nothing of the affair until it is over, and declares that she knows Mr. Potter to be a brave man. THE Fountain <Ledger> says that on the 12th the brick residence of Mr. James Williams, eight miles East of Attica, was destroyed by fire. It was occupied at the time by Mr. T. M. Worthington, who loses most of his household goods. The house cost about $5000 and was one of the finest in the county. ——>A BEAUTIFUL but silly girl, sixteen or eighteen years of age, daughter of a widow of Rockford, Illinois, advertised for a husband, for the romance of the thing, and was caught and seduced by a Pike's Peak gambler, named Wm. Monroe. She started in company with him to Pike's Peak, and was found murdered on the way, at Ottumwa, Iowa. BfcS"" The New Orleans papers give full details of the ceremonies of Ihe iuapuration of the Clay Statue, on Thursday, the l'Jth instant. The QtMrtml gajra : The inauguration of the ('lay Statue wus blessed by fine though rather warm weather, ami wits remarkable as oltVring by far the greatest, public spectacle ever w itnessed in this city. The only previous event at all to be likened to it was Geu. Taylor ' triumphal entry on his return from Mexico, some fourteen years ago ; and that was a display lar behind the one offered yesterday. The United Service Gazette says that Prince Alfred is being brought up in the service precisely the same as if ha were the son of a private gentleman . " lie messes with the midshipmen, keeps his regular watch, dines occasionally in the ward room, and takes his turn to diiie w ith the captaiu. He is treated by his messmates as, iu all respects, oue of themselves is called to order by the caterer, aud runs the same risk of being made the subject of a pirn Ileal joke as other young geutleiueu himsell, however, being generally pretty forward in the business of playful mischief. D pofl one question, that of smoking, theyouug Prince is sternly denied the privilege indulged ill by his brother officers." WILL THE COAL FIELDS HOLD OUT?— Some of the scientific journals have been discussing at various periods the question whether the coal fields will hold out, considering the enormous quantity consumed. Professor Rogers, after showing the areas and solid contents of the various known coal fields, estimates that at the present rate of consumption, 190,000,000 of tons per annum, the coal fields of Pennsylvania alone would meet the demand for 3,164 years. If the consumption were doubled, viz: 200,000,000 of tons, the great Appalachian field would meet the strain for 6,937 1/2 years. If it were quadrupled, viz: 400000,000, the productive coal fields of North America would suffice for the world s supply for 10,000 years to come. EXPELLED.—At the recent session of the the sfetbodUt i North ludiand conferemx" of Episcopal Church, held at Mishawaka, Rev. C. W. Miller, late pastor of Huberts Chapel in this city, win espelled from taSe conference and the church by an almost unanimous vote. He made a Bpeecb of about bar hours in length iii bis own defence, but the conference adjudged him guilty and dealt with him accordingly. The charges preferred against bim were based on improper intimacy with a young lady of his congregation, of which accounts were published in the city papers in September last. The members of the conference deemed it due to themselves and the church to act as they did in this mutter. Their proceedings were as prompt and decisive as were I hose of I he Indiana Conference at Btoomington lust October, iu the cue of Itev. Prof. Ir. Iaily. I ;li. Journal. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
