All kinds of Steamboat Job Work done at short notice, in good stgle, and at reasonable rales. Extra copies of the paper for sale at all times. STKAMBoAT REHISTfcK. Tbe Weather, ftllHUI, was 01 iol and cloudy. Business, was dull Freights are becoming scarce, with no change from yea- i terday's quotations. The swift Bowling Green packet, . B. Campbell, departs to-day at 9 o'clock. Capt. Charlev Lumui is iu command, and Mr. John Travis is in the office. Under Mm auspices of these clever fellows, tbe Campbell is winning goldeu opiuion, and wbeii any freight is to lie had, always obtains ber share. Tbe Lue Eaves was considerably behind time last night. She missed leaving at her regular hour, and will not get away until to-day. The Diana was due yesterday, but bad not arrived at dark last night. Tbe Dunbar got off with a very (air load of freight and passengers at her usual hour. Tbe Sit Star, having been repaint.ed and fitted up anew, will be at our landing this morning, ready to receive passengers and freight for Paducab. She is in charge of Capt. Hull, an old and erperinced boatman, and will leave at 12 o'clock. We understand that Mr. Flournoy, formerly of the Republic, will assume tiie duties in the office of tbe Star. Tbe Union will be at our landing to-day on her way to Bowling Green. The I'liion is under the control of popular officers. The Kate French, Capt. Caft'rey in command, will be at the wharf this evening with shingle out for Louisville. ...... By ft private letter from Mr. McDonald, clerk of the Masonic (rem, we learn that that steamer will be at our city on Friday, and will be able to stow away some Wabaf h freight, if there should be any to go up that stream. The Diana broke a shaft a short distance above Memphis, ami is making her way upon one wheel. The Lancaster No. 3. will pass down to-day. She carries the Louisville and Cairo mail. Capt. Ketchum of tbe J. W. Cheese man was presented with a beautiful fowling piece, valued at $130, by some of kit admirers at St. Louh, on Monday last. Captain Lancaster has purchased the General D. M. White for tbe Kvunsvillc and Henderson trade. The price paid was $13,000. .V. A. Ledger. Tbe Ledger is mistaken. It took the item from the Enquirer, which had the figures wrong. The price paid was $2000. ...... Th new gti-unicr Mary T. will lie at the landing to-day, as she was to leave Louisville yesterday. The following are the dimensions of her hull : length 192 fe t, beau: 35 feet, and depth 8 feet. Her machinery consists of two engines, y feet stroke and cylinders 22 inches iu diameter; four boilers, '.! feet long and 30 inches in diameter ; a doctor engine and a freighl huislcr, which have a separate boiler. The command of the new steamer 11. J. Adams has been bestowed upon Capt. Triplet!., a veteran officer. Tbe Adams leaves Louisville ot Saturday, and will be u our city on Sunday. The Greg Eagle will be down to day for New Orleans. The Bowling Green departed at f o'clock with a very slim trip. The D. li. Campbell, with a moderate load, arrived yesterday afternoon utiotit 5 o'clock. We are indebted to Mr. Travis for her manifest. A Nkw Paddlk Wueki. fur 8.i mkrs.--The genius of a Rochester Mechanic, named W. L. R. Matteson, has produced an invention for a paddle wheel for steamers, which is likely to excel all tinnier etl'oils hi that direction. The model of 1 Lis wheel is indeed a model of simplicity. The design of all attempts at feathering paddles has beea to apply the power of the paddle direct upon the water all the time it is iu contact with tbe element. To do this it is necessary that the paddle shall occupy a perpendicular position to the boat, and hold the same relative position I'romhe time it enters until it leaves the water. Many invention to effect this have been devised, all more or less complicated, and therefore objectionable, especially to sea-going steamers. This new invention is really as simple as the commou paddlewheel. The paddles are kepi or rather changed in their position to the main wheel, by another, which lias its center above the main shaft, but of course revolves with it. The third wheel, which controls the position of the paddles, can be set so that wheu the wheels are not turning the paddles may Ik; horizontal upon the water, and thus offer but little resistance. War steamers, which work ntirr raiiTni will realise the advantage of this invention. The common paddle wheel with .-stationary buckets, offers a great deal of resistance to the water when the vessel is under sail only. Those practical steamboat men who hae examined this new wheel, express their unqualified admiration of it, and declare that it must supersede all others. Receipts by River. Mistaken rouiN Kkapro Convict. flw Clereland (O.) Plain Dealer says that recently a leading citizen haviug been invited to a parlor masquerade, resolved to go, and to make hi -disguise impenetrable, sent to Columbus or a convict's lull suit. It arrived in due time, nd a boat nine o'clock on the evening of the masquerade the Judge put it on, covered himself with a light cloak and sallied lorlji. A violent wind prevailed .mil one of the gusts look the Judge's cloak off and sent it whirling into the air. He sprang to recover it, and at the same time a watchman sprang for him. The Judge got his cloak, however, before the watchman got him, and started on a fast run, holly pursued by the watchman. The Judge saw it all. The watchman mistook him for a reulur escancil convict. If caught it would be an unpleasant pickle. The watchman saw it all, too. Here was a chance to distinguished himself, and perhaps to make something by !t The race becume exciting. Fortunately for the Judge it happened on a buck stieel. The race continued. The watchman was reinforced bv another watchman, ami liolli pursue 1 the Judge at a furious pace. The Judge finally "gineout' and made the watchman, alter considerable, trouble, understand who he was and what he was about. lie was then suffered to proceed on his way. He told his wi fe, who said she would never say anything aliout it, ami that is bow il got out. OfeilrThts is a very graphic and vivid sketch of the appearance of a battle-field after an engagement. It is paiulnllv deathlike : The plains of Guidzzolo is really horrible 10 look upon. Kven so late nsye.-teiday the dead were not buried. They were to be seen in groups of twenty or thirty, huddled together in one spot, where a shell had exploded or tbe Chas-seurs d Afrique bad passed. All still remained in the attitude in which death had struck them down. Here was one with uplifted am to ward off the blow which had split open his skull, and smashed his brains far and bear. Close by was another with his hand upon his breast, ihivered and rent by the grape. -Another seemed to be smiling as if in mockery of the grim wurrior's approach. Some were lying upon their back with faces turned toward Heaven, ami prayers Still seeming to linger upon their lips. Further on there was a Hungarian, who had thrust his clothes into a ghastlv wound near the heart. At bis left was a T ro!e.-v. with the unused cartridge between iiis teeth.
