Mr. Editor: Ftrane announce the nam .of J. M. Caldwell as a candidate for County Treasurer at the next October election. ' lunrii. - Forjudge Court Common Pleas. Th friend of Ben. tit In ton, Eeq., announce him as a candidate for Judo of the Court of Common Pleas, at the October election. Election Incident. It lias not been fbr-gotten-by the old residents of. the county, that in 183G, when Van Buren rfml Harrison were candidates for the Presidency, the returns of that election from Decker town- , ship were thrown out by tbe board of canvassers. The causes that led to tins result is not so well known, and we believe will be interesting to our readers. The election was held at Dicksbttrg in a somewhat dilapidated log school-house. The townships " at that .time were without poll-boxes in which to deposit the ballots, and the judges used a hat for that purpose, covered with a handkerchief. There were about one hundred voters in the township, eighty of whooi were strong Van Uuren men, under the leadership of Mart Anthiji, or as ho is familiarly known," " Grizzly Bear." The Harrison men were marshaled by Captain Uelwood, assisted by Wm. Madi-'on, or as he was called, "Bill Mat." Betting commenced at an early part of the day. the Van Baren nen staking their " piles " that Har- ; rison would not receive twenty-five votes in the township. One of the judges (J. C.) had invested all be could raise on V'au Buren, and at the same time had iiuhibed pretty freely of "red eye" from a Husk he carried in his pocket, thereby becoming fully equal to take a conspicuous part in wiiut followed. But we must permit Capt.. B. t tell the story in his own way: "About 3 o'clock the boys got warmed up and were doing some tall liallting. I stayed in?ide and kept tny eye on J. C, knowing the d -d rascal would stuff the hat if he could. Pretty soon I saw him take up a wad of about forty Van Buren tickets and slip them into the hat. I had my eye on him. but couclmleil not to preach. Shortly after, when J. O. was taking a swig from a Hash, 1 put into the hat about 1. 10 for Harrison. The polls closed, and eouotingcomnietn-ed. Harrison, Harrison, Harrison, fell from the lips of the Jntpector, until tweuty-livt' tickets were counted. Then I commenced quietly raking in my bets, knowing the d 1 would lie to pay before long. When they had counter out thirty Harrison vote, "Old (iri..ly" . -could stand . it no longer. Sjliil he : 'Boys, there's treachery somewh.tr!" ntid believing Zac Trulack to be the guiltj- party, he 'chawed' htm up in a little less than no time. This was a signal for a general free light, jtud the Imys wem in on their muscles in liue ityle. But it wouldn't do any good; llarrison tickets still kept pouring out of the .'. old hat until tbe number of ballot counted exceeded the number of votes cost by about - sixty-five. At this stage of the proceedings rwjtne one suggested that the counting cease, ; as there remained about fifty votes yet in : the box, which suggestion being acted upon, -, a general rush was made, and hat, ballots - and tally-papers were scattered in all directions." The Captain concludes the history by adding that the returns could not be fixed'up and were thrown out . in consequence. But, says he : 'I cleaned them out that time."
