evansvu.i.e. IND.: SATURDAY MORNING .r:AraiL u Opposition State Ticket. JPOB GOVERNOR, HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P, MORTON, of Wuj ne FOR 8ECBETARY OP BTATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of IUndoIplK" FOB TREASURER or STATIC,. 1, JONATHAN S. HARVEY; of :iarlio. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot; , Vigo. 1 1 FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. , v FOR REPORTER OF BUFREMB COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. f ' FOR CLERK OF SUPREME Coi T, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange , FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCnER, of Putnam. Presidential Speculations. Bead' Chances. J udge The Boston Traveller has the following Presidential speculations : McLef.n stock has improved considerably for ft week past, corresponding : with the improvement of Hunter stock on the other side. The Judge would make a very good candidate for the Opposition ; but we believe that the man who would do the best for them is Judge Read, of. Pennsylvania. If he should be nominated,- and Mr. Douglas should not be nominated, the election virtually would be decided i a 31 ay. He is the only man of whom it can be positively asserted that he would be sure to get the rote of Pennsylvania and New. Jersey;' And with the vote of those States, success .would certainly be counted upon, as the Republicans are sure of one hundred and eighteen votes, and the two States named, would give thirty-, four, which would bring the ("electoral column up to one hundred "and fifty-two, the magical number. Other men'tnight succeed in these States, but Judge Head would do so without an if or an and - He would run as well as any other man who can be named In Indiana and Illinois,', ijowthat Gov. Bissel is gone. I'M ' 'Ci.ts -, , Notwithstanding the i great claims put forth by the friends of General Simon Cam eron in regard to '.his popularity, jive have no doubt that Jndge Read, has "t wo firm, de. voted friends and political; admirers a Pennsylvania to Gen.f Camrrop'S, one. In fact, Judge Read is one or ihe most popular public men in his .State- - His" success in political life has been astonishing; O He was elected Supreme Judge by a. vast majority, and to-day is doubtless the Strongest man in the Keystone State" ainongs the ople at large. , , r . n ; ' If we were to hoist a ticket;' at tlie head of our columns in advance of ag nomination, we should inscribe UporfMt" the names of Bates for President andi Read JbV Yif Pres ident. If Douglas be slaughtered atrCharleston, and Judge Rei should be nominated nt Chicago on the ticket with Judge- Bates, he would command an immense vote amongst the Anti-Lecompion Democracy. Herein he has more strength than any man likely to be nominated at Chicago. 'Tlu stampede amongst that better portion of the Democratic paity would equal that whica decimated it in 1854. i " , Yea, verily,. Bate3 and Read would make a ticket which would prove invincible j and letter still, the . gentlemen composing it would reflect honor on the people who elected them, and secure peace iuid -safety to a distracted country. Under their administration, the "era of good feeling '' would resume its beneficent. reign, anu the heartburnings which now exist in tbo different sections would become allayed. . . " Who Sh.U b NoailBatea 1 ' A ell-informed politician nf Lawrence county a Republican of toe straijhtest 'sect has addressed a letter to the New York Trillin, giving his views as to who, bhould be nominated for Presidt'ut by the t.'hicapo Convention. Amog other things he says: U is veU'as ti deny that there is an eleliievt in our midst siiflii ieutly . strong to turn the scales against us (.tiie UepulilicHns), who are not so ardently Republican in their seutiments, as they are intensely, anti-democratic ; and that should this 'element Iks ignored by the Chicago Convention, defeat in this State is inevitable." The same correspondent says further that it is his opinion if Mr. Bates is nominnted- at Chicaj-o, ho will carry &Q00 ru ore voles than any other possible caudidale; that 10oQ of these votes,' " i,n the Third Ii?tritt,'vho can not be induced -to vote for several candidates be plight name, will cheerfully . gire their suffrages to Mr. Dates; and that of this thousand, at least 300 reside, iu Lawrence county. . 1 We hear a great deal now-a-days, in this connection, about "selecting representative men," "abudouing tried leaders," intermingled with innumerable supers at-J'conserva-ism," and charges of "bantering p.riiviples or Southern trade." T,hee sneers and charges are priiiicipajly rivule by ien who arrogate to themselves a great rjeal ot patriotism, an whq clim to bu profound politicians. U'e caunot seo how. the , publioatjion of such sneers, insinuations, and . epibe.ts. fl,ga.inst men who think they cannot conscientiously vote for a caudidale whom they conceive to be -a radical Republican, and whose electiou they believe will tend to aleniate the difforent sections of the country and foster Hits strife between the Nortii- . era and Southern States, can ptssibly ivild to the Republican candidate's 'chances of success. As regards capacity . tu perforin the duties devolving upon tliO President, there is but little - contention -among the friends of the vai ions aspirants. -' The whole question hangs on arailibility. ' Who can ths most certainly be elected?Although the call for the Convention at Chicago was extended to all shades of Ilia Opposition, it is conceded that the Republicans will have the power to nominate whoever they please", liut it is equally clear that their euccess depends wholly upon the manner in which they use Unit power. If they beed the warnings given tlieio in the recent State elections, they will be careful

not to treat With 'indifference, the " conservative" or, if they please, the old "Whig and Anti-Lecompton Democratic element in the States tf Illinois, Indiana, Nev, Jersey, nnd Pennsylvania. Let us enumerate a fufr 'of these" significant straws that indicntejthe drift of.iiu.blic opiaion. Elec-. lions have Wen held, during the present month, in the States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin States which have aTways been regarded as Republican beyond a perad yen tare. , In Oonneclicuf, the Republicans succeeded -this year,- as it were, by the skin of their teeth, after" the most desperate exertions and laborious .'efforts of such men as . Corwin and. Stanton, who do not come . up to the full stature of Republi-1 canism,' according to the standard erected by' many of the leaders of that party, lui Rhode Island, there were two tickets in the field the radical, straightont Republican, and the ' conservative," or Arnericnn-lte-publicftri." ' ' V,'"'"' . ' ; ' The Radicals refused to give the Conservatives a fair show in tho nominating convention, insisting On nominating none but those they pleased to term " Representative men," and the consequence -was, they were ignominiously deflated. In Wisconsin, the nullifters of the Fugitive Slave Law, who have been fostering . the unfortunate conflict between the authorities of that State and the United States nominated a " representative man" and run him as the Republican candidate lor Judge ot -the Supreme Court. The law-abiding citizens of that State, who are opposed to disregarding the laws of . the United States and in favor of carrying out the t-ompronmes of the Constitution iu good faith, wefe' u'n willing tt, support the candidate nominated by the radicals, and brought out a candidate in opposition, whom they elected by a handsome majority. These are indications of public sentiment which it will be well for the. delegates at Chicago to consider before they choose a standard-bearer. If this sentiment of conservatism, which to a great ex tent pervades tho Is orthern masses, is properly , regarded -if cool beads have tbeir proper influence in that Convention, we are confident it will select a 'man upon whom all sections of the Opposition can. unite, with an enthusiasm and energy that will not fail of success. ' '
