PEELLE, of Randolph. FOB TTlKASnRF.tt OF FTATF, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Chwke. FOtt AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot Viro. : FOR ATTORNEY CENEBAt, JAMES G. JONES, of Vnkrl.urf;Ii. FOR REPORTER OF SUPKEMS COURT, ' BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SCPKEJf E COriiT,- - '. JOHN P. JONES, of Lagtangf'. " ''" FOR SCPKRI.NTEKDEXT OP PCBL1C ISSTUUCTIBX, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. Belligerent. Our readers will recollect Unit an Indianapolis correspondent of 011.3 told aliout, two politicians pretty "high in the pictures" who got into a ficrre rtnarrc-1 at the township election at the Capital. Well, those two gentlemen were Gordon Tanner, Esq., Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Court, and non. Jonathan W. Gordon, Speaker of the House- of Representatives. After the difficulty, which Originated in Gordon giving . Tanner the lie, ' the latter demanded a retraction. A regular correspondence followed, according to the code of honor, but " nary " fight was the result. Tanner claims that Gordon didn't stand up to the requirements of the code,-while the latter will probably reply that he does not recognize that sanguinary and barbarous article. .j .-.. i; So the matter standi . Mr. Tanner has gone to Charleston, to be gone till the 10th proximo, but it is .understood that .he lms left a standing invitation for Mr. Gordon to meet him at some convenient lime (after the lOtb) out of the State. , ' Their correspondence tills a largo spara in the Slate Sentinel of the 0th.' " ' Dwellings Bciised. There seems . to ive been a great destrnction of country isidcnce3 of late. The Greencastlc 1'cass say? the dwelling ;'Archibald Johnston, valued at over $2,t00, 'ith it3 contents, was destroyed by fire on be 4th, two miles north of that place. ( The Brookville Democrat says that the (welling of David F. Cooley, two miles lorth-east of Cedar Grove, was burned 'on the Cth. Loss about 1,500., j T The Lafayette Courier says that be handpome country residence of Jame3 William, pn Shawnee Trairie, was destroyed , by tiro on the 5th. It was a beautiful Gothic cottage, valued at $5,000. Insured for 20i0. It will be seen by our Rockport letter, that the residence, of Wiu, Statelier of Spencer county has been burned. Very little of the contents of those residences were saved. Rockport Correapontlcncr. Rockport, April Cth, lSOO. E i) no its Journal : Everything kt prttty quiet up here just now. There was Homo excitement at our Township election hist Monday there being eleven .'candidates tor Justice in t lie field but, .unfortunately for them, when the votes were counted the great majority of them were beaten. Our present efficient Trustee, who, wa3 a candidalo , for re-election, had no competition. Mr. Wm. Statelier, a well-to-do farmer living about seven miles from town, mot with quite a sertou.i losf, ft few nijrhtJ ngn. While absent from home, his dwelling took fire, and iu a few minutes was among (lie things that wore his wife and children barely escaping with their live?!. His wilt got severely burned in her endeavors to save the children. They lost everything except one bed. Tha farmers are all busy, getting ready to plrtiit, tbn spring iM:ing, so fur, very favorable for such work. Wheat crops Jsok badly ; occasionally you see a good looking fild, but generally speaking there will not lie a half crop. There is a tine pro'pect lor peaches and fruit of all kinds. Polities arc aliout at a stand still. The Republican Club here is quietly at work, and will no doubt prove an efficient worker in the present campaign. There is a seeming truce letween the two wings of the harmonious Democracy of this county, nt the present time, but whichever side wins at Charleston, it will lie a bitter pill for the other to swallow. Spencer County. The Polygamy Question. The Cincinnati Commercial says : , ' The Hon. Eli Thayer, of Massachusetts, the leading Republican of the popular sovereignty persuasion, has made a speech against the bill of Mr. Nelson, of Tennessee, fur the suppression of polygamy in Utah. Mr. Thayer said an expression of sentiment was superfluous. As a penal statute, the lull would be powerless. Nobody would vote money to enforce the law. He regarded it as a mere sham, a false pretense, and therefore he would vote against it. A 5 a defense of the national honor, it was worse than futile, because it brought that honor into contempt. Ho believed the peaceful, quiet, practical solution of the question, was now within reach, lie wn happy in the belief that the silver mines of Carson Valley and the gold iniuc3 of Pike's Peak, alliuded a solution of this vexed question of polygamy. There is a quant, old fashioned, practical ;'iiiiinion sense iilwiit Mr. Thayer's remarks, that hi rather rt-t.eshing than otherwise.. x2f The Cincinnati U.itle .says tlini since the Connecticut and Rhode Nhiutl election. Mr. Seward's prospects for' itic Chicago nomination have materially " declined." His friends no doubt begin to think that some concession will have to lie inaue to the Conservative sentiment.. CtayT!ie Domoc rary iieli-yatc-s und "interloiK,Ts" are leiuiiiii(; to wend their way Southward. Tin; Charleston Convention comes off on next Monday week 231, April. , , , j , Ai'Pointku Wauhes. w "National tJloit' Programme. j Wnnr&potine of & &4 1'. Tr ;hn . Washingtok," April- 4? 1 SCO. The pIKNirance of John DeM, of -Tennessee, in the political circles of Washington, has lxeti followed by rumors, and more or less evidence, of the purpose on the" port of the National Union organization centering there to form a combination on Judge McLean for President, and John Cell torViee President. Mr. Bell, it is understood, gives the scheme

or programme nis approval. , n nas ii-.o concurrence of 'mq?t ot the Southern Opposition members from the South",' who would Us credited with a "sincere hatred of the i!oi"is Democracy, and nn abiding ''wish' nt ail limes to liont it. While they' are not Republicans,' ntul ' never will be, they hre thoroughly anti-Locofoco, nnd do - not feel inclined at all, in the disruption of parties, to find a lodgement in the itosfom of their ancient enemy. 'Herein they differ widely from- tbeir iSovthern - brethren," who are ready to unite, :on the shortest notice, with the Democrats on Douglas, Hunter, Breckinridge, or almost nnyiwdy else.' Probably there is more significance (at least so intended) ' in this proposed combination on McLean nnd Bell, than in nny movement that ha3 yet been proposed from that quarter. Bell is the favorite with the Northern wing of the National men. They see, however, that nothing but failure would attend the enterprise of making him simply a third candidate, while the ?ucces3 of the Democrats would follow as the result of a decided opposition. They know, also, , lU.it there would be but small chance for his endorsement or, selection at Chicago, while Judge McLean; who, they argue, ought to prove satisfactory at Chicago, , though not their choice, would yet receive .tlaa cordial support, wiihBeUl.br Vice President. They jioint to this proposed arrangement rt3 evidence of a sincere wish to tinite the Opposition,1 and as ft practicable way to accomplish it. ': There aro those ' among the Nationals who do not sec why such a ticket should not be taken at Chicago, if the design, be to defeat the Democracy. .' The election in- Tennessee and Kentucky of a majority of Opposition members of Congress is referred to a3 proof that, with such a combination, those State3 might' be carried ; at all events, it is argued, they could -not be considered as nny more doubtful than Pennsylvania, New Jersey Indiana, &c, would be with Mr. Seward or nny distinctive Republican ticket. ..,." The-npjH-arance -w-r-tim this combination will .be carried to t'altitaore, where there is a likelihood' of its being adopted. Sliouli it be,, whatjetTcct .would- or, shoujd it have on' the Chicago Convention?' ' " ' ' ' J ' r - . . , .. : - - I i : ; : , I .
