O., St. Louis, Pittsburg, Kentucky, Memphis, R. M. Patton, Tenn. River, Diana, Louisville, Moderator, Pittsburg. Emma, Pittsburg, Magnolia, New Orleans, Southerner, Louisville, Masonic Gem, Wabash, Science, Wabash, Iowa, Pittsburg, DEPARTED. Jesse K. Bell, Lou., St. Louis, St. Louis, Kentucky, Louisville, R. M. Patton, Louisville, Diana, New Orleans, B. Green, B. Green, Moderator, St. Louis, Emma, St. Louis, Southerner, Memphis, Science, Wabash, Iowa, St. Louis. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was very pleasant, with the exception of a disagreeable wind, which caused the dust to fly to a considerable extent. ......The <River> was falling. The Wabash is also reported to be falling, with scant three feet on the chain, and 2 feet 9 inches on the falls. Navigation in that stream is virtually closed. ......<Freights> have declined slightly. The rates now, are on flour 40 cts per bbl; whisky 75 cts; pork and lard 60 cts; corn 25c per pack; pound freights 25 cts per 100 lbs; hay $8 per ton. They are not very plentiful even at these rates. ......The <Dunbar. is the regular mail packet to-day, at 12 o'clock. Passengers will find her one of the most pleasant boats on the river. Her officers are all good fellows, and spare no pains in aiding their passengers to enjoy themselves. ......The <Lue Eaves> is the regular South Carrolton packet. She departs this afternoon, Capt. McDonald and Taylor are accommodating officers, and will do everything in their power to make passengers feel at home on their little boat. ......The <Masonic Gem> arrived last night with a fair trip. Mr. McDonald kindly favored us with a manifest. The <Gem> put out 550 sks corn at Mt. Vernon. We are informed that for the present, the <Gem> will abandon the Wabash trade, and either enter Green River or lay by for more water in the Wabash. ......The <Dunbar> arrived last night from Paducah, making the quickest trip of the season. She left Paducah at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, and arrived here at 9:45 last night, making the run of 150 miles in 13 hours and 45 minutes. This she did, without missing any of her landings. We should say that is hard to beat. The <Dunbar> passed the <Bowen> just below Henderson, but her officers admit that the little "pony" did some of the tallest running they ever witnessed. ......The <Charley Bowen> arrived last night soon after the <Dunbar>. We shall have to designate these two boats as the "lightning packets," if they continue to make such time as yesterday. ......The huge <Magnolia> arrived yesterday, and is receiving several hundred tons of freight at this point. She put the price of flour down to 40 cents. ......The Calliope boat was at the landing last night, and favored our people with a few of her tunes. ......The <Moderator>, from Pittsburgh, put olf a large lot of goods, groceries, glassware, &c. She then left for St. Louis. ......The Steamer <Alida>, we are informed, starts, to-day, for Paducah, Ky., to go on to the docks for repair. One of the proprietors informs us that the steamer will be back, in this trade, at the end of fifteen days. The <Alida> has done an immense freight business this season and has yet many contracts to fill.—<Terre Haute Journal, April 4th>. ......The <Grey Eagle>, oh her return from New Orlenns, will be promptly placed in the packet trade again to Henderson, in place of the <Scioto>. Capt. Ballard has won the best regards and good will of all the travelers and shippers along the line of the trade between this point and Henderson, and we hope soon to see him in command of another boat.—<Lou. Cour>. ......We copy the following graphic account of the burning of the <Kate May> from the Cincinnati <Enquirer:> On Sunday morning we announced the destruction by fire of the splendid steamer <Kate May> at Cannelton, Ind. Her crew and passengers arrived yesterday on the steamer <Silver Moon>. Clerks Harbin and Enyart furnishes us the following particulars: The <May> was lying at Newcomb's Wharf-boat, taking on coal, when the sparks from the steamer <Union> ignited the cotton piled up on her forecastle. The hose was stretched and the water poured on the one bale that was burning, but so great and rapid was the spread of the fire, that in five minutes the boat and all the cotton were in one sheet of flames, leaving the crew, 25 deck and 50 cabin passengers, to get ashore minus their clothing, &c. Clerk Harbin saved all the money, but all the books and papers were lost. The chambermaid, Ellen Ward, is missing, and was undoubtedly consumed in the burning wreck. She was a white woman, and hailed from Greenup county. Ky. But for a flat-boat lying alongside of the <May>, the loss of life would have been terribly great. Most of the cabin passengers were passed down from the cabin-guards, in their <dishabilles>, by ropes, &c., while a few, waving the unpropitious condition of the weather and water, and braving the elements, sprang into the river and swam ashore. Seven gold watches belonging to passengers were lost, and a Mr. Hickman, a merchant of Fort Smith, lost $2,600. Mr. Newcomb lost his wharf-boat and two barges loaded with coal. His loss will be about $2,000. One deck passsenger [sic] reached from the flat with a pole and dragged to him his burning trunk in which he had $3,400 all in silver. When the fire in the trunk was extinguished the silver was nearly all melted together, depreciating its value fully 50 per cent. A child belonging to a deck passenger was badly burnt, and Captain Bruce had the back of his head and neck badly burnt and blistered in his efforts to save the lady passengers of the steamer. He was the last to leave the boat. The <May> was scuttled, and her hull now lies sunk in about six feet water. Many incidents of the coolness and heroism of crew and passengers are related, but suffice it that great praise is due the officers of the <May> for their manly conduct in rescuing so many lives from destruction by fire. The citizens of Cannelton turned out <en masse> to the relief of the sufferers, and all threw open the doors of their homes, each endeavoringto out-do the other in bestowing attentions, &c. Clothing was freely given, and gladly received by the ''ship-wrecked passengers." The <Silver Moon> brought up the crew and passengers free of charge, and $50 was raised on the steamer for their benefit. Captain Bruce remained at the wreck.
aground at horse-shoe bend in the Wabash. ANOTHER BOAT SUNK.—The Nashville <Union>, of the 31st, has the following: The steamer <Winifred sunk yesterday morning at or near the mouth of Mar- rowbone, in this river, thirty miles below Nashville.
