THURSDAY MOBNIKG.. A PHIL a Opposition State Ticket. FOR GOVERNOR, IIEXRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. FOR SECRETARY OF STATS, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of Randolph. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburg'n. FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of JIaiion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. The Presidential Question. . Mr. John D. Defrees, now making Lis headquarters at the Federal Capital, writes as follows to the Indianapolis Journal. Mr. D. is an old politician, and well posted. His opinions are entitled to great weight, enjoying as he does the best opportunities for forming correct ones. A great many of the delegates to the Charleston Convention are now here and very little else is talked of about ths hotels and on the streets, than who is to be the vietiro selected for the sacrifice! Douglas stock is now regarded as below par, and all the efforts of bis friends at Charleston cannot bring it up. I was told to-day, by one who is well posted, and who would like to see him nominated, that there is no hope for it. Tho Hunter stock seems to be the highest in market; yet, as an outEider, I make the prediction that Gen. JoeLane will be the candidate ! The friend3 of Gov. Seward sy he is certain to be nominated. They don't stop to enquire about an election afterwards 1 To nmuy of them that don't seem to be of any importance. Ask them where the votes to elect him are tocomo from, and they point at the immense majorities lie can get in the Empire State, New England and the other States that voted for Fremont. What about the States of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois I Those enthusiastic gentlemen have not put them into the account, though he cannot be elected without Pennsylvania and one of the other three Can he get them? The recent letter of Judge Bates, avowing what has always been his views on great national questions, so well accords with those entertained by the great majority of the Republican party, that his nomination is beginning to be more regarded as eminently judicious and proper by men who would not listen to the proposition a short time ago. The Convention of the Union party, which will meet at Baltimore on the 8th of May, will most probably nominate Hon. John Bell, of Tennessee. Mr. Bell's whole course ""on the slavery question, forced upon the country by Democratic aspirants to the Presidency, has been that of an hone3t man, a patriot, and a Statesman. Were he tho President, we should have an administration just to every portion of our country. Value of Money. If money be loaned at six per cent, interest, nnd the interest collected annually, and principal and interest re-loaned, it will increase as follows : $1,000 in 12yearswill increase to $2,01 2 20 " 25 " " 4,201 88 " 50 " " 18,420 23 " 100 " 339,404 37 " 200 " " 115,127,791 79 " 300 " " 30,003,43(5,143 17 In round numbers, nearly forty thousand millions of dollars would be required to pay the debt of only one thousand dollars loaned at sis per cent, compound interest for a period of three hundred years. Some Democratic' paper culled the I'ress, stttrta a rtinmr that the slnves formerly owned y Hon. Kdward Bates run awuf fiom him, instead of being emancipated. The story is utterly ildsc, and, if iMisible, still more al3urd. A ni'er with half a stock of even African sense, would not run away from so kind n master as Mr. Bates, and no ono that ever lelon-e-.l to him was Rttilty of the indiscretion. St Louis Eccniny Xeies. The Holy Father, say3 a private letter from Home, continues to enjoy good health, allhou-'h iiis troubles seem rather to in-i-reaS'! tlian to diminish. Although he has no human or earthly grounds of hope, he never loses his confidence in God, and is (irmly convinced iiiat all will end well. For Single Ladies Only. A meeting hns been called in Steilacoom, Oregon, to con-

fult about the best means of getting an importation of; young women. The call was signed by ninety-five bachelors. The following is a copy of the advertised call in tho Steilacoom Herald: Attention, Bachelors ! Believing that our only chance for a realization of the benefits and early attainments of matrimonial alliances depends upon the arrival in our midst of a number of the fair sex from tho Atlantic States, nnd th.-.t to bring about such an arrival, a united effort is called for on our part, we respectfully request a full attendance of al! clegible and sincerely desirous bachelors of this community, to assemble on Tuesday evening next, February 28, in Delin & Sborey's building, to devise ways and means to secure this much-needed and desirable immigration to our shores. Signed by D. V. K. Waldron, S. K. McCall, Jas. E Jester, G. Ford, Christopher Downey, Egbert II. Tucker, O. H. White, O. C. Shorey and eighty-seven others. Postponement of the Editorial Excur3iox on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroap. In order to give longer time for preparation, as well as to throw the proposed excursion to Washington into the most agreeable period of the spring, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company has finally determined to fix the day for the special train from Wheeling and Parkersborgb upon Friday, May 4, instead of the 13th of April as at first proposed. The young ladies of one of the villages in Jefferson county have adopted a novel method of raising funds for charitable and religious purposes. At a late festival, a bevy of the prettiest girls in tho room formed a line, and for a price paid down, permitted the gentlemen to take a running kiss of the lot. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
