AUG MAKCH SI ion State Ticket. FOR GOVERNOR," HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTKNAXT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. FOR SECRETARY OF STATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of Randolph. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke." FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ' ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, ' BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. TFor the Jtmmal. Messrs. Editors: Sirs Dr. Hal lock, in jour Daily of Thursday, wilfully misrepresents me, and states ' that which is falst. He says I never until recently called upon him for township funds, with which to repair the roads in my road district west of the mouth of Pigeon creek, which ia not so. I respectedly called upon him last summer and fall for the appropriation, and urged him to have the work done, as it was so much needed, but each and every time he made frivolous excuses, and never granted the request, until within the last few weeks, when forced to do so by an indignation meeting of the people on that and other subjects ; and when I reminded him at that public meeting of my having last summer frequently requested him to have the work done, he did not have the face to deny it, but I find he can write untruths which he has not the courage to utter when face to face. Besides, he should not have waited for supervisors to petition for such things. . ': . The Trustee is placed over the Supervisors, and, has the direct supervision of all in his township, as well as all the roads therein ; and it is part of his duty which he has taken oath to execute, to "see to a proper application of all moneys belonging to the township for road purposes; " and the Supervisors are merely his agents in carrying out the same, and not the directors and governors of the Trustee. But Dr. Hallock's statement in the paper, that " no Supervisor" ever asked htm fbr road funds for the roads but what he granted, is a falsehood of the basest kind. Yours, &c, ' James S. Wills, Supervisor Road restrict No -5,- P. T.

ComiHuttieatfil. Mr. Editor: In your paper of this ' morning I notice a rehash of the morsel of delicious villiCcation which appeared in ' Thursday's Enquirer,' atd I must say that Mr. A. T. Whittlesej is the most pertina- ' -sioualy indu3triou3 person in our city. - He ', is never Satisfied while a person of fair reputation exists, and consequently he makes defamation his peculiar vocation. I am not "f a believer in total depravity, but if there is a person totally depraved it is Whittlesey, i In trumping up these charges, La had for his motive the As3essorship, but tin Americans into whose association he (TUlo'ed, will i not vole for the traitor, and n&tirali.ed ' citizens detest him too much to tavd aught to do with him. This he will fit d to be the cate next Monday. In to-day's. EAjuircr your readers will find a communication in ' answer to Whittlesey's charges, which will perhaps set this matter right. , Tuos. lie A voir.'.'

tegSomo of the Democrats of thi3 State" propose to take to Charleston with them a huge tent that will hold 500 persons, and lay in their own' provisions, so they will, not be at the mercy of the. Cliarlestonians. It is estimated the expense will not exceed $50 for each person, everything included (except eztrat, we suppose). Tli3 persons engaged tin getting this arrangement ap, desire a large crowd to go. We suppose, as they will be obliged to ' sit Turkish livshiou, that they will form a formidable crowd of squatter sovereigns. If thy commence cutting their Douglas diJo3, those fire-eaters will " make them sqnat" quickly. Com u ii iitio led. Information Desired. Mb. Editors: I desire to know whether Pigeon township and the city of Kvnnsville are so barren of capable men, that they are compelled to call on one amity to supply. them with officers? 2d. Are not the voters of the cily as capable of choosing a City Collector, as any one man however intelligent he may be is for them. In other words, is it not time that we cease to elect men for the purpose of having them farm out the office to others? Querist. JSfGen. Joe. Lane, in a speech at Con. cord, N. H., during the Presidential canvas of 1856, said : "The question of slavery is a most perplexing one, and ought not to be agitated. We should leave it with the Slates where it constitutionally exists, aud the people of the Territories, to prohibit or establish, as to them may seem right and proper." Gen. Joe Lane, in his late speech in the Senate of the United States, said : , I do not believe the people of a Territory have a right to exclude, or establish, or abolish slavery. No such right is conferred on them by the Constitution.'' So General Joe Lane has that highly important and even indispcnsible qualification of a Locofoco candidate for the Presidency, a Northern face and a Southern luce. His friends are fond of calling him " the Marion of the Mexican war' but he is something more than a Marion. If the old "hwamp Fox" of the Revolution had been a double faced Reynard, the two faces looking in opposite directions, he might have been even more successful in his vigilance than be was. fiouuville Journal. &e& It is said that Governor Willard has appointed Dr. James, the gentleman whose gauds of life hare been running out for some years past, as physician to the new penitentiary at Michigaii Cily. A good appointment. La. Journal. Tbi.i appointment is made through purely humane motives ou the part tit' the Governor, well knowing ' that. , if Mr. . James', sauds of lite were ahout run - out, Michigan City is the best place in tltt' Union to have item run in again. La. Cour.

Rich Mineral Springs. A day or two since, we visited the Tftr Springs, situated on the lianki of Highland; Creek, about half mile from our town. The groind -n which these valuable 'Springs are situated belongs to the Ilighlnnd Coal Co, of our town, anil, we feel assured, that if they are developer", by sinking shafts and erecting proper machinery, a rich yield of Tar-Oil, will enrich the proprietors of the groend. The mineral, which exudes from this ground, (100 yards front extending back near 300 hundred yards to the hill.) is as black and solid as common tar. The ground (which is uow

wcll besprinkled with many small pools of i w ater, since the receding ot the lugb water), shows nnniistakcable signs of the presence of large quantities of Tar-Oil, beneath the surface. All the water is covered with a thick scum of oil, and we gathered several large solid clots of the tar ou a stick and examined it., Now that fortunes are being made by the discovery of tar deposits, we would urge on competent parties to visit our town and examine these valuable mineral deposits. We feel assured that money can be made ut- it. Unlontoion (Ky.) Neu-s. How to Kkep Furs A few days more Rnd fuTS will be superflous, and then conies the process of putting them away so that moths shall not invade them. It is stated that the best way to insure immunity from destruction is to pack all in a trunk or box lined with brown bolland, first sprinkling them liberally with black pepper. . This is better even than camphor, for dealers ia furs art often victimized by entomological pests, though their goods bo saturated with the powerful odor. Before packing away furs they should be well beaten, to dislodge any larTse that, despite the most scrupulous care, may be deposited in them. The superiority of pepper to camphor as a preservative to furs consists in the fact that, while larvae will incubate among camphor, there is something in the aroma of pepper which destroys them in embryo. A Good Political Joke. A good story is told of the towns of Lisbon and Lyman, at the late election in .New Hampshire. Lisbon is a Republican town, and Lyman lias been Democratic. ' The Democratic leaders in the latter town thought they could spare two or three voters, so as to carry Lisbon for the Democrats, and they accordingly moved some two or three, just long enough before the election, to entitle them to- vete. The result wa3 that Lyman elected a Republican Representative and Lisbon two, much to the dismay of the astute managers, who had thus over-reached themselves. Compbbssing Cottos. "We learn," says the Louisville Courier, "that a-' large cotton press ha3 been erected at Memphis, which ia capable of pressing 500. to 600 boles per day. The prineipal portion of the cotton hereafter received at this port" will be compressed, making it half the size of the common pressed bale, which will allow onr steamers to bring a much greater number per trip. "Should tlu? planters and merchants at Memphis encourage this plan, the Memphis packet company will have to add more steamers to their line, uj nenrh- all the cotton which now goes by way of New Orleans may turn this way." No other premiums were ottered, t he large silver ill -del was aw.irded to the Economist at the New York State Fair; and the first premium at thu United States Fair h-ld at ChicK, and twelve other Stale and County Fairs iu lboti. in no branch of mechanical art has there bven a more apiarent advance thau iu tuu uiauutacturu ot stovis. Iu style and finish, the improvement has beeu real, leaving nothing to be desired on that point, but the severe competition in price, to which they huve beeu subjected, has deprived them of many of the more substantial qualities desirable. This s-eius moreescially to have leeu the case iu reference lo cook stoves an article of domestic economy that has more Unto w ith scolding wives aud crotche.y servants thau most people imagine. The public have loug sought an improvement in this article, and we believe are ready to pay any reasonable price for a cooking atove. if it only IHsisesses the merits of size, weight, convenience, durability, economy, aud perlectiou of luauufuctuie. These qualities seem to lie iiossessed most fully iu the Kcou .mist a new stove, perfected and brought out the past sensoii, by Messrs. Treadwell, Perry A Norton. of Albany. There never has been, to uur knowledge, any broiling fixture that was really satisfactory iu iis op-raliou. The proprietors of this Htovv have leeti conducting a series of experiments upon broiling, eliciting some valuable facts, and resulting in the invention of a giidlrotl adapted to this stove, which has been secured by tetters parent, ami is one of the nitut admirable things of the kiud wo ever saw broiling without smoke, aud keeping the oil.- in a constant glow. We are always gl.-td to do justice to mechanical improvements, and especially such as contribute so largely to the general god, as the one above mentioned. Ut 'S OJV IfJVn, J ZnMBIIE 9 JL lot of these truly and jn-dly celebrated, newly aud greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of the unrivaled Stewart's Patent, aud at the only agency in this city. Tho. Saiitliii , No. 2! Main afreet, between Firt and Second. The flist premium was awarded to this Stove as the best coal or wood cooking stove at the Southwestern Indiana District Fair, held at this place. No stove ever devised combines as numerous or iuHrtaut scientific principles as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes anil roasts at the same moment, without onedish imparting flavor to another, or pnnlucing that san eie-ss of taste in meats and gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidious of taste, makes so insuperable an obection to every other cookiug stove now iu use. With one-fiairib of the fuel employed in the b-st of stoves now iu nee, this most perfect and complete cooking apparatus erfomis, Kimultaooously aul more perfeciiy than has ever before been accomplished, everything required iu the t?st provided families, so far as cooking is coui-emed. When, too, ft is borne in mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, slid the fire is at its height, without the smallest unpleasantness from Hie change of teinperatur, so little is the heat from it diffused externally, an inducement is presented for its universal employ ment never lieretofore presented in any other stove. That, indeed, Isoueof its priucipa attractions, as well as its ereatest wonder, how h at in so econo mize! and ditlnsed within the stove itself, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a place where, with any of the stoves now in use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weathor more particularly, to lreathe with comlort. For 2o years Mr. Stewart has been employed In perfecting this stove, and since last February, he has obtained three uew patents for improvements, which, iu his opinion, and the opinion of all who have examined it, made it perfect. Within fbnr years (xvury thontund of them have been sold, nnder a full guaruntee, and not one has beeu returned. These remai k.-ible results have emlollened a host of stove manufacturers to imitate the Stewart Stove, but, save iu exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expire!) enables them to give, they I no more resemble Stewart's than chalk docscbeese. I These imitations are known by various names, but , thy are all ileticieut in various particulars, such as the air-light lsxes, by which full control is kept i over the fire, and of the heat, by a drafc damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a con- : stant current of cold air on the outside of the Are i box, w !iich again (av-ome heated air, aud, passing i into the oven, is made available fr cooking ur- ! iHises. The agent ami sitbscrilier is receiving the best ' Imitation of the Mewart Stove, called " Pride of : the West,' which be will be happy to dispose of : at two-thirds of the price of tiie gonttiue Stewart's. : It is 'possible, of course, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's. The "Stewart" is sold by the agent, under a full . guarantee to perforin as recommended, and if, within three months from purchasing, any fault is fouud 1 with them, he a ill take them back and refund the money. Housekeepers will bear in mi ad. then, tliat the genuine Stewart Stove, bought at I lie ouly agent's here,,Aill, with half the labor and oneIburth the fuel, do more and belter cookiug tliau any other stove ever constructed.
