There was a severe frost the night before, and a chilling wind was blowing during the whole day. There seems to be an excellent prospect for the entire destruction of the peach crop, if it is not already cut off. ......<Business> Sunday and yesterday was quite good. At one time there were five large New Orleans boats at the landing receiving and discharging freight. ......The <River> was falling considerably. At Cincinnati it was rising with 14 feet in the channel from that city to Louisville. At Pittsburgh it was on the decline. ......<Freights> have been thinned out considerably by the steamers <Fairchild, Bulliit, and Tylor>. We did not ascertain that there has been any change in the prices, as yet. The rate will be reduced—we think—shortly as, freights are daily becoming more scarce. ......The <Charley Bowen>, be it remembered, is the regular railroad packet for Cairo and intermediate points to-day at 12 o'clock. Let every pound of freight to be delivered at any point on the lower Ohio be sent down early, as Capt. Dexter always desires to leave on advertised time. Passengers will find the <Bowen> to be one of the most comfortable boats on the river, and as speedy as the swiftest. ......The <Lue Eaves> arrived on Sunday with a good trip and 15 passengers. She left yesterday afternoon with a good load. ......The <Dunbar> left at her usual hour with a fair trip. ......The <Grey Eagle>, it is stated, has made her last trip in the Louisville and Henderson trade. A gentleman went up on her, for the purpose—so we are informed of buying her and placing her in the Memphis and Vicksburg trade. The <Grey Eagle> is an honor to any locality, and we will part with her with regret. We trust, however, that her enterprising owners will supply her place with a boat equally capacious, comfortable, and handsome. ......The <Greenville>, Capt. Humphreys in command, and Mr. McCulloch in the office, leaves for Bowling Green to-day. The <Greenville> is one of the reliables and has an established reputation for promptness and speed. Passengers and freight will be carefully attended to. Mr. McCulloch will accept our thanks for a copy of his manifest. ......There are some probabilities that the arrangements so long talked of in reference to changing the manner of carrying the Louisville and Cairo mail is likely to prove a failure after all. The suspicion seems to have been circulated that there is a strong probability the Post Master General will stop that route altogether, and that the present mail company, foreseeing the danger, are anxious to get rid of the thing with their boats in time. How true this is we do not pretend to say. ......All day long yesterday, the crew of the steamer <Pacific> were busily engaged in unloading the unfortunate <Anglo Saxon>. The shore was literally lined with the merchandise, furniture, produce and machinery taken from the ill-fated steamer. The fire in the meantime continued to rage in the hold, but by keeping the hatches down tight and throwing in a steady jet of steam it was prevented from bursting above the decks, Finally, after nearly everything was taken from her, she was scuttled, the water rising above her lower deck. This extinguished the fire, and will insure the safety of the boat. The <Pacific> did one of the most profitable day's work that will ever fall to her lot again, as her officers will secure salvage both on the <Anglo Saxon> and her cargo, which must be very valuable. What the amount of the insurance is we did not learn. ......Several articles of clothing and valuables were stolen on the <Anglo Saxon> during the excitement on Sunday night. The passengers were first taken off the boat, thankful to escape with their life. After they they [sic] discover there was no immediate danger, they returned to gather their clothes, when they found many things missing. The <Anglo Saxon> was loaded with merchandise destined principally for Arkansas. She had some sixty passengers on board at the time of the occurrence. One of her passengers, Mr. Amos White, of Zanesville, O., informs us that she had in her bold a lot of hay, whisky, lime and powder—rather combustible materials, we should judge. The powder was thrown overboard immediately after the discovery of the fire, and all danger from that source were removed. ......The Cincinnati <Gazette> says: We have before us a printed copy of the "Constitution and By-Laws of the Upper Mississippi River Pilots Benevolent Association," and this association certainly does not appear to be anything very alarming; on the contrary, something which reflects credit upon these pilots. Its objects are to help pilots who are out of employment for a certain length of time, or in case of sickness or disability; and in case of death to support the widow and educate the children. Liberal provisions are made for such distributions. The rules are rigid in respect to sobriety, &c., of pilots, members of the association. It is an admirable society, and one which should be encouraged by steamboat owners. Its headquarters are at St. Louis, and every pilot on the Upper Mississippi should be a member.
