When, six years ago, Douglas's Nebraska Bill to repeal the Missouri Compromise was pending ia Congress, "Governor Seward reminded the repealers that there was sutu a thing as re-enactment as well as repeal, as they in time would learn. The prediction was scouted, the idea that the proviso of Freedom would ever be restored was pronounced absurd. The Kansas Legislature have just passed a Bill over their Governor's Veto, which reads as follows : Section 1. That Slavery, or involuntary servitude, except for tbe punishment of crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, is and shall be forever abolished in this Territory. Here it is, almost word for word, the repealed section of the Missouri Compromise, re-enacted 1 Six years have been wasted in the vain endeavor by fraud, by force, by Federal power, by usurpation, to thrust Slavery into Kansas in defiance, of a timehonored compact; lives and property havo been sacrificed ; public money squandered; angry political contests aionsed and all for what? Can the introducer of the Nebraska Bill, can the endorsers of it, can any living soul tell what they, or tbe South, or the Territory, or tbe Nation, have gained by that sttiicndous political folly? Albany Journal. fgyOneof ihe editors of the Chicago Fret Tribune, writing of Kellogg's speech, the object of which was to show that Horace Greeley and Douglas had conspired fur tbe purpose of returning the latter to the U. S. Senate, says : ' He sustained the allegations by the production of an overwhelming array of testimony, which can neither be refuted, gainBayed, nor explained away. The ppeech was a perfect extinguisher, upon Douglas' prospects at Charleston. It destroys the last thread of chance he ln-fore had. Judge Kellogg fully sustained his former charge and made good tbe pledge he gave, that he would produce an array of testimony that would place the matter beyond further controversy. Tbe Illinois Dougla.sites were awfully scared, as link after link iu the chain wn produced, proving the bargain and sale, and the condition made lietween Douglas, Greeley uiul others. Tbe speech has made a greater sensation than any yet delivered in the House. Hefore be had concluded bia remarks, the " National Democrats" lia1 suhscriled for a large edition of the speech for the use of the South and tbe Charleston Convention, rs it completely forecloses Douglas' claim, and leaves the course clear for Breckenridge, Hunter, or some Southern candidate. gSaJTThe Cincinnati Gazette give3 this happy description of Col. Henry S. Lane : Lane is beyond question the nio3t attractive stump speaker in the State; not particularly in jtolitical information, or close convincing logic, or originality of conception, but in the power to rouse an audience; to fill it with enthusiasm to entertain it with happy hits to fasten its attention by striking remarks on points that penetrate to the very core of the issues to be discussed to unite argument with humor, and supply the details of reasoning by forcible illustrations that flash light all over it, and enable it to be seen in full, instead of collected together part at a time and put together in the mind afterwards. .He has the peculiar magnetism of tho orator, the undetinable power that . sways a crowd without their knowing why And Uliitetl with these qualities 1 possesses j a character ot the most unspotted purity, I and a seuse of honor that recoils from a mean thing: as from a rotten carcass. A NoN-ISiTKRCOUKSE MAX CONVERTED. The Chattanooga Advertiser gives the following romantic conversion of an antiYankee Georgian : Not a thousand miles from here there lives a gentleman of the rfcal thunder and lightning, red tlag school of Klitical belief; a ''jam up" Southerner, aud deuth upon the Yankees. He was a widower, and had a daughter attending school, and on ascertaining that the teacher was one of the ; down East girls, took his daughter from school, resolved to have nothing to do with the dowtieaster wasn't going to have bis daughter taught by such personage. Shortly after he took his daughter from school he happens to be traveling on the same train with the Yankee school murua, is introduced, ii rather pleased, becomes interested, ia got and is a goner. The Yankee school teacher is now Mr. ." gjy The movement toward the early cloving ol lndianaolis retail dry goods stores, to give clerks recreation at night, is being ptwhed with vigor. SkiTl t is said that Charleston will soon have a Urge floating population, as a niimlH-r of the Democratic delegates intend t live on board ship during the Convention. They prefer ibip board to $7 a day board. ,

This seems more especially to have been the case in reference to cook stoves tin article of domestic economy that haa more todo with scolding wives aud crotcbe.y servants than most people imagine. The public have loug sought au improvement in this article, aud wv believe are ready to pay any reasonable price for a cooking stove, if it only Mnsesses the merits of sii-.e, weight, convenience, durability, economy, aud perfection of manufacture. These ijualities seem to be possessed most fully iu the I con .mist a uew stove, verfected and brought out the- ast seasou. by Messrs. Xreadwell, Perry & Norton, of Albany. We beard so much of this stove, and it looked so tnnch like a stove inteutled for tine, that we concluded to try them, and the result of the experiment couviuces us tlii'.t the proprieturs, in their dcUrmiuatiou to make theeW More itt the trorld, have succeeded. We regard the cononiit as possessing all the merits above enumerated as the great stove of the day far in advance of auvthing ever attempted iu the line of stoves, perfect iu all its apiKiintments, and true to its uutne hi durability aud the iwol fuel. Among the uuiuy convenience, at Lie lied to It, may be mentioned a large oven, with hooks arranged, for suspending meats while roasting. A copper water tank, holding front; 12 tu li gallons warming ciosei, nroitiug iioanu, ac., sc. me broiling hearth is one of the most noticeable features of this remarkable stove. Tliere never has been, to our knowledge, anj- broiling fixture that was really satisfactory iu its operatiou. Tbe proprietors of this stove have been conducting a series of experiments upon broiling, eliciting some valuable facts, and resulting iu the invention of a gridiron adapted to una stove, wuicu has been secuied by letters pateut, und is one of the most admirable things of the kind wo ever saw broiliug without smoke, aud keeping the cualn in a constant glow. STEWART'S STOVE. rmLWA is ojw njjn. j imrui; mM. lot of these truly and justly celebrated, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of tlie unrivaled Stewart's Patent, and at the only agency in this cjty. . ,. . j Tho. Scantliri, No. 29 Main street between First and Second. The 111 st premium was awarded to this Btovs as the liest coal or wood cooking stove at the ijout hwesturu Indiana District Fair, held at this place.' No sieve ever devised combines as numerous or imports ut scien title principles as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes and roasts at the same moment, without one di-h imparting flavor to another, or prciiicing thnt sameness of taste iu meats ami gravis, which, to the delicate aud fastidious of t:ite. makes so insuperable an objection to every other ookins stove now ia se. With one-fourth of the fuel employed iu the best of stoves now iu. use, his most perlcct and complete cooking apparatus performs, simultaneously and more perfectly than has ever before beeu accomplished, everything - required in the liest provided families. So far as' cooking is concerned. When, too, it is borne in .-j mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitcheti when the Stewart Stove ia fully emjdoyed, and the fire is at its height, without the smallest uupleusauttiess from the change of (emporators, so little is the heat from it diffused externally, au inducement is presented for its universal employment never lioretofore presented in any other stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest wonder, how h at is so economized aud diflused withiu the stove itself,, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a place where, with any Of the stoves now iu "use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any ouet iu warm weather more particularly, to breathe with comfort. . - For 20 years Sir. Stewart has bs-n employed in perfecting this stove, and since Inst February, he bus obtained three new luttents for improvements, which, in his opinion, and the- opinion of all who have examined it, niaile it perfect. Within four years thounund of them have been sold, tfmler a full guarantee, and not tine has been returned. These remarkable results have emboldened a hot of stove manufacturers to imitate the Stewart Stove, but, save in exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expired) enables them to give, they no more resemble Stewart's thau chalk dueacheese. These imitations are known by various names, but they are all deficient in various particulars, such as the air-tight boxes, by which full control is kept over the lire, and of the heat, by a draft damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a constant current of cold air on tli outside of the fire box, which again becomes beafed air, and, passing iuto the oveu, is made available tor cooking arposes. The agent aud subscriber is receiving the best imitation of the Stewart Stove, called " Pride af tho nest, which he will be happy to dispose of at two-Uilras ol uie price ot the genuine Stewart s. It is possible, of course, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's.: . The " Stewart" is sold by tbe agent, undur a full guarantee to perlorm as recommended, and if, within three months from purchasing, any fault is found with them, he will take them back aud refund the money. Housekeepers will bear iu mi ad. then, that the genuine Stewart Stove, bought at the only spout's here,.will, with half the labor antf onefourth the fuel, do more aud bettor cooking than any other stove ever constructed. THOS. SCANTLIN, No. 29 Main street, Sole agent for the sale of the Stewart Stove in Southern Indiana and Kentucky.
