It is enough so to hurt Douglas. The Crescent 'approves of the action of the late Senatorial Caucus, and says that their resolutions were adopted by the u Democracy of the country, as represented in the Federal Senate." This does not accord very well with the opinions of Northern Douglas papers, which denounce the caucus and the resolutions without stint. When we 'recollect that the following anti-popular-sovereignty resolutions "are in the caucus platform, we do not think the Crescent is sueh a strong Douglasjjaper as our neighbors claim. Or does it Support him and reject his hobby ? Cere are the resolutions : Resolved, That neither Congress nor a Territorial Legislature, whether by direct legislation or legislation of an indirect and unfriendly character, possesses power to ' annual or impair the constitutional right of any citizen of the United States to take his . slave property into the common Territories, and there hold and enjoy the same while the Territorial condition remains. Resolved, That if experience should it any time prove that the Judiciary and Executive authority do net possess means to insure adequate protection to constitutional ! rights in a Territory, and if the Territorial - Government should fail or refuse to provide the necessary remedies for that purpose, it will be the duty of Congress to supply such deficiency. . Correspondenc of the Jonrnal. The Great Shoemakers' Strike Its Cause. - Boston, March 18, 18G0. Editob Journal: As a leisure hour is at my disposal, I have concluded to write yon "-Aline by way of employing my thoughts, .and, at the same time, to contribute some little news touching the all-absorbing theme of the strike of the operatives in the manufacture of boots and shoes in the manufacturing towns of New England. The strike seems to be coming quite general, and daily accessions are being made to thealready large corps of operatives. . Lynn leads off at a round rate, and preseBts a bold front; maintains great independence ; says I will or I wont, with emphasis. v Many other important manufacturing points in the same line of busiuess are following in her wake, viz., Stoneham, Marblehead, Haverhill, Dan vers, Naticfc, Salem, Milford, Campello, &c, &c. The strikers have drawn up a tariff of prices, and demand the manufacturers to sign the same before they will go to work, which they refuse to do, if there should never be another pair of shoes made (so tltey say). The advance rates demanded over former" prices, vary from 25 to DO per ceut. The strike is confined almost exclusively to the " stone-hammers " or " bottoniers." The women (stitchers and hemmers), for the suke of peace and harmony, are willing to make concessions in their demands, or even to continue at former prices. On yesterday I attended the Boot and Shoe Exchange, where all the large manufacturers keep samples- of their goods on gale. Many of them are desirous to sell out what goods they have on hands, und will then cease to manufacture until matters are on-e niore settled. To visit, at this time, Pearl street, you could not, for your , lite, have live minutes conversation with a shoe inan, without having the stereotyped phrases of "Boots and Shoes are going to advance ; they are bound to advance:' "Boots and Shoes are rising ; they are bound to rise." Indeed the whole trade seems demented on the subject a complete Boot and Shoe mania. The quietude of the city seems ns much perturbed as was our city some months since, when the cry of mad-dog had an existence, (that dog that bit Smith Gavitt.) There seem to exist the best feelings (socially) between the manufacturers and operatives. Some of the manufacturers donate $25 per week to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and needy who are among the strikers. At Lynn, I have heard both the employer and employee express themselves, and am driven to the conclusion tht the strike, if not entirely, is almost entirely, a mutual and preconcerted move, with an eye to get up prices. There is cer- " tainly some dilution. The demonstration at the Strikers' Muss Meeting in Lynn on Friday night was Cousidered a "ten strike.'' " About six thousand jiersons were present. The manufacturers seemed :is well pleased ns we do in Evansville to sell a bill of goods ot $1,000 to $2,000 cash. - I canuotclo without speaking of Messrs. Jons Hill k Co.'s large steam shoo factory at Stoneham. It lias capacity sufficient to make 3,000 pairs of shoes per day. They are now making about one-third thatqnantity per day. The leather is put in, and in almost no time, out conies as nice auu iihui; 8trme ptgil shoes as ver ettV, and while the entinTpetefT operatiou is going on, it uiv cuwio re . l. 4. lu reuiiudarae very vividly ot a gentle cu-rth-.mala 1 uce thft laiiouncre of one ot the - operat'ives, Messrs. IJill & Co. are nature's j noblemen. For the sttkc of siuooUnnjr tbe path of the forlorn, strikers, tbey bare given one of their large balls, for .a daneingr room for the disaffected operatives. The ent-err tuinrucnt occurs about every ten days or two weeks. Music and refreshments are furnished by the roirii tors. Every manufacturer ha bis reasons for the great depression and stagnation in the boot and shoe trade. Many und varied are the reasons assigued. One gives as a reason that "too many hides are tanned, and too mini' persons engaged in ninuufaetaiiri boots and shoes." Others attribute the cause to the West and Southwest not paying their debts during last year. Others, again,' say it is the loss of Southern trade, vybii'li loss is attributed to the doctrines of Seward It Co., the IJeloer Hook, John Brown
or, in other words, the Anti Slavery
S so prevalent at the North. My opin ion is, the sole causes of the depression in the boot and shoe "market of Boston, are simply these: Too many ere'- engaged in manufacturing, find the West and Southwest have not paid their debts and politics j have cut no figure in the case. The South ! has paid up well, and bought as many goods : this season as usual. Such are the facts, as j stated by men who know. I may write j again, should I not become lost in these j abominable crooked streets of Bjton. Respectfully yonrs, ; ' R. No Place fob Interlopers. The Charleston Mercury of the 16th says : J' - "An intense excitement prevailed in the city yesterday, on the publication of onr second Washington dispatch, which in some measure cast a doubt over the meeting of the Convention. Arrangements, which bad been in rapid progress, were suspended in many iastances, and in others faintly carried on. It is, in onr opinion, but the pretext seized by the friends of Mr. Douglas to transfer the convention, if possible, to some city where they will be in the ascendant. This movement commenced many months since, when they prated of the danger to be apprehended from personal violence in Charleston. This is, however, their last card, and this will fail. Mr. Douglas' friends see plainly that a Convention in Charleston will preserve a Southern aspect, and cannot be brow-beaten or bullied. The six hundred and fifty gentlemen who compose the Convention will be taken good care of, and the preference given them. About one hundred have already been invited to accept the hospitalities of our citizens, and many more undoubtedly will be. But the myriad hangers on, who are not admitted to the floor of the Convention, must take their chances for feed and sleep. It is greatly to be desired that their numbers may be reduced to as small a figure as possible. The Convention will meet in Charleston ; but if Mr. Douglas and his friends desire a Northern Convention, let them call one." A Substitute for Pueskrvk3. A lady writer in an exchange communicates the following bit of information obtained where she "took tea last:'' . ... A dish of what I took to be preserves was passed to me,, which, npon tasting, I was surprised to learn contained no fruit. The ease with which it was prepared, and the trifling cost f its materials, are not its chief recommendations, for unless my tasting apparatus deceived me, as it is not usually wont to do, it is emphatically a tiptop substitute for apple sauce, apple-butter, tomato preserves and all that sort of thing. Its preparation is as follows: Moderately boil a point of molasses from five to twenty minutes, according to it3 consistency, then add three eggs thoroughly beaten, hastily stirring them in, and continue to boil a few minutes longer, when season with a nutmeg or lemon. The large silver medal was awarded to the Economist at the New York State Fair ; aud the first premium at the United States Fair beta at Chicago, and twelve other State and Comity fairs In 18ot. In no branch of mechanical art has there been a more apparent advance than in toe man ufacture oi stoves. II is oat a tew years since the very name was a novelty, representing a huge, ahapulwa structure, almost as devoid, of use as oruauieiit, These have gradually given place to patterns of grace aud-ntility ; until the varieties our markets now present have almost exhausted tlie vocabulary of names : and the different idiai the metal is made to assume, would astonish oid Vulcan himself. In style and finish, the improve went has been real, leaving nothing to be desired ou that point, but the severe competition in price, to which they have been subjected, has deortved them of many of the more substantial qualities desirable. This seems more especially to have been the case in reference to cook stoves an article of domestic economy that has more to do with scolding wives aud crotcheiy servants than most people im agine, rne puuuc save long socght aa Improvement in this article, and we believe are ready to pay auy reasonable price for a cooking stove, if it only possesses the merits of size, weight, convenience. auraoiuty, economy, and period ion or manufacture. These qualities seem to be possessed most fully in the Kcon -mist a new stove, perfected and brought out the past season, by Messrs. Treadwell, Perry A Norton, of Albany.- We heard so much of this stove, and it looked so much like a stove intended for e, that we concluded to try them, and the result of the experiment convinces us that the proprioters, iu their determination to make the test Mom iu the teorla, nave succeeded. We regard the Economist as possessing all the merits above enumerated as the great stove of the day far in ad vance of anvthing ever attempted iu the line of stoves, perfect iu all its appointments, and true to its name iu durability aud the use of fuel. Among the many conveniences attached to it, may be mentioned a largo oven, with hooks arranged, for snspeuding meats while roasting. A eupper wafer tank, holding from l'i to 2o gallons warming closet, broiling hearth, rc.r &c. The broiling hearth is one of the most noticeable feat u re of this remarkable stove. There never has been, to our knowledge, any broiling fixture that wag really satisfactory in its operation. The proprietors of this stove have been conducting a series of experiments upon broiling, eliciting suuie valuable facts, aud reuniting in the iuveutiou of a gridiron adapted to ttiis stove, which has been secured by letters patent, and is one of the moot admirable things of the kind we ever saw broiling without smoke, and keeping the coals in aconstaut glow. STEWART'S STOVE. cm r.M'a's ojv mujvo, jm ljirop WM. lot of these truly and justly celebrated, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of tlie unrivaled Stewart's Patent, and at the only agency in this city. Thos. Scantlin's, 2Vb. 29 Main street, between First and Second. The fiist premium was awarded to this Stove as the best coal or wood cooking stove at the Southwestern Indiana District Fair, held at this place. : No stove ever devised combines as numerous or imKrtant scientific principles as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes and roasts at tlie same moment, withont one dish impart ing itamr to another, or producing that saa'eness of taste in meats and gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidious of taste, makes so insuperable Alt objection to every other cooking stove now in nse. With one-fourth of the feel employed in the best of stoves now iu . use. this most perfect and complete coeking apparatus perforins, simultaneously and more perfectly than has ever before been accomplished, everything required in the best .provided families, so far as ' eookitig ift concerned. When, too, it is borne in mfnd that the most delicate females cm visit the kitchen when the tStewnrt Stove hi fully employed, ' and the fire is at its height, without the smallest j unpleasantness from the change of temperature, so little is the beat from it diffused externally, ati inducement is presented for its universal employment never lieretutore presented in any other stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest wonder, how h at is so economised and diffused within the stove itself, aud so little perceptibly escapes into cue kitchen, a place where,. with auy of the stoves now in use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one. in warm weatbar more particularly, to breathe with . comfort. - j i'or 20 years Mr. Stewart- has been employed iu , perfecting this stove, aud since last February, he-j baa obtained three new patents for improvements, which, in his opimen, and the-opinion of all who 1 have examined it, made it ierfect. .Within four t years twenty tvt)s(ina of tnem nave fieen sold, under a full guarantee, and not one Jias leen returned. These mnarknbie results have emboldened a host j of stove manufacturers to iinitato tho Stirw.irt Stove, j bnt, sirve in exterior appearance, which the old . patents (having expired) enabb s them to give, they I no more resenioroBiewan s man cnalK uoesctieese. These imitations are known by various names, but j they are nil deficient in Tarionn particulars. nch as the air-tight boxes, by which full control is kept t over the fire, and of tfie heat, by a draft damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a con- i stunt current of cold air on tbi outside of tho fr.e 't box, which again becomes heated air, and, passing" into the oven, is made available for cooking rur- ' poses. j The agent and subscriber i receiving tlie best Imitation of the Stewart Stovt-, called " I'ride ot the West," which he will be hniiny to dispose of at two-thirds of the price of the geuuine Stewart's.. It is possible, of course, to cook with it, bnt it ' bears no resemblance to Stew.irt's. . i. Thft Stewart " is sold by the g-nt, nndor a full. guarantee toperiorm as recommended, find if, within three months from pi:rcuaiiig, any fault is found with them, he will take them back and refund the money. House keeiors will near m mind, then. that the genuine Atewart Stove, liought at the only agent's here,.will, with halt the' labor and onefourth the fuel, do more and bettor cooking than' any other stove ever constructed.
