The Weather, yesterday, w as cloudy, and itt the afternoon we were favored with a slight sprinkle of rain just about sufficient to lay the dust. The Hirer continues to fall very rapidly, both here and at nil points above and below. The Wabash also is falling fast, and unless there is rain soon, boats will be unable to ascend as far as llutsonville. Business on the levee yesterday was rather dull. The shipments were few. freights arc yet plenty and firm at the last quotations. The Lue Eaves arrived at 1 o'clock yesterday morning with a fair trip. She leaves to-day. The Masonic Gem and Kate Sarehet both departed for tne Wabash with light trips. The Dunbar is the mail boat for Paducah and intermediate points. She leaves at 12 o'clock, and passengers will find her to be one of the most pleasant boats they ever took passage in. Capts. Fowler and Dusouchet are noted for their attention to the wishes of their friends who take passage with them. The Lue Eaves, notwithstanding her set to" with the Greenville, will be ready to depart to-day at her usual hour. Capt. Taylor will be found in the office to look after the comfort of those who travel with him. About 8 o'clock on Wednesday night a collision occurred between the .Cue Eaves and Greenville in Green river, causing considerable damage to both boats. . The jack statT and nose of the Eaves were severely battered, and nearly all of her crockery broken by the concussion. LTer passengers were greatly frightened, and thought Uey were going to the bottom without a momeat's warning. A large hole was knocked into the Greenville, but, fortunately, it was above the water line and she did not sink. The river where the nee id cut occurred is wider than at almost any other point, and it seems to us there must have beeu grosrf carelessness on the part of some one to Lave occasioned the collision. The Lebanon from Nashville was at the wharf yesterday. She took on board a large lot of hides, some tobacco, and other -..freight for Cincinnati. The Southerner passed down for Memphis. She put off, and received, asnittll lot of freight. The Missouri river is very low, and difficult to navigate. There are only 3 feet of water on the worst bars. We learn that Capt. E. CS. TVarce is to take command of the Kentucky in place of Capt. John Scott. A woman drowned herself at St. Loais on Sunday morning by throwing herself into the river from a boat, and on the evening of the same day a man drowned himself from the same boat. No names are given. Tub wear of some of the cast iron sewer plates laid in the streets 33 years ago has not amounted to 2 per cent. This is a strong argument in favor of iron pavements. A'- Y. Railway Review. The New York Herald says that the price of aldermen and i.egroes has gone up wonderfully in the last few years. A New York alderman could be bought np, it tells us, for a hundred dollars ten years ago. l!ut now bis vte commands even two thousand dollars or more. The price rises with the rise ol real estate. The Dayton Journal says : " We are glad to learn from Mr. Daniel Garst, of this vicinity, that the finest buds on a large number of his peach trees, say 10,000, have not been injured by the frost, lie brought us a number of cuttings yesterday, in which the blossom buds were plump, fresh and green. Express. -- The Republican of Nebraska have met with a triumph in the recent election of Delegates to the constitutional Convention about to be held in that Territory. The ' -onveut'soii is to consist of 52 members, and the returns, up to our Inst informal ion. indicate I lie election of 40 Republicans. It is now believed that the yellow fever having broken out with great violence at Havana, it may not be entirely safe for Northern men to go to Charleston on the 23d day of April next. I.v the Forrest divorce cose Justice Moncrcin", of New York, has confirmed the report of the Rcteree awarding Mrs. Forrest alimony nt the rate of S4.000 per annum. Tun personal safety of his Holiness at the Vatican is henceforward to lie more effectually provided for by a guard of twentyfour men from the newly enrolled civic force, denominated Guardia Palatina. Oxk of the oil-wells in Pennsylvania is owned by a Mr. Evans, a blacksmith, and a poor man. He prosecuted the work of boring himself, and struck a vein of oil at the distance of seventy feet. He has been offered it is said $50000 for his well, lint tins declined selling on these terms. In removing: the dead from the ground of the First Baptist church, iu La Grange place, Philadelphia, one coffin was opened in which the bndy was found to be almost wholly petrified. It was that of a man about forty years of age, and though it had been in the earth one hundred years, the countenance was as smooth and placid, and his white hair as perfect, as the day it was placed in its resting place. TnE New Orleans Delia states that " the Democracy of Louisiana docs concur with the rest ot the South in uncompromising hostility to Mr. Douglas' nomination, and in regarding the territorial tjuestion n3 an issue involving essential Democratic principles, and that the delegation will never consent to the abrogation or modification of the two-thirds rule." IIox. Frederick P. Stanton, now of Kansas, has announced his determination to take ground for the Opposition candidates in Connecticut. This is his first open declaration in that way. He seems to have given up all hope that Charleston will do right, and therefore identifies himself with the general Opposition. Du. Richard Mead of England was the first to introduce the custom of having himself called out of church ; but he practised this ruse under more favorable advantages than most could. His father was a clergyman, with a large congregation, and when the Doctor was summoned out, would say, " Dear brethren, let us otter a prayer for the poor sufferer to vvhose relief my ton Richard has been ca'ued." In this way the son gained notoriety. A 11 Apr y Maicuia.uk. It is a glorious sight to see two old people, who have weathered the storms and basked in the sunshine of life together, go baud in hand, lovingly and truthfully, down the gentle declivity of time, with no anger, nor jealousies, nor hatreds garnered up against each other, nnd looking with hope nnd joy to the everlasting youth of heaven, where they two shall be one forever.
