"Spencer County" says that a vein of Lead has been struck at the new coal mine near that place. If it shall prove to be a workable vein, Rockport may well congratulate herself on its possession. It will be a fortune for her. In our opiuion, the mineral wealth of South-western Indiana has but just begun to be discovered and appreciated. The time may come when this region will be famed the world over for its iron, lead, and coal and perhaps other minerals. ———<>——— ttjf The Louisville Courier (Democratic) denounces the attempt to change the loca tion of the Democratic National Convention as " the last attempt of deperate political gam blers to prop up the sinking fortunes of one upon whose success depends their hopes ofrepaymentforout-laysof time and money' u after having failed in their attempts to get up a fictitious) strength for their favorite, and failing to control the selection of dele gates." The Courier says any ckaDge by the Na tional Executive Committee will be an usurpation of power ; that all the arrange ments have been made to go to Charleston ; that delegates have been elected to go there ; that rooms have been engaged and will have to be paid for whether used or not ; that there will be ample room for all delegate; and that the proposition for change comes from mercenaries who hope to influence the Convention. The Courier also Bays emphati cally, that the true representatives of the Democratic people will not permit the Con vention to be changed from Charleston, aud that the Convention will be held at ' Charles Ion. Thus will talk all the anti-Dougla papers, and if the place should be changed, there will be a rumpus on a jrrand scale, and two Convention. Oar re Sefcoola. A few days ago wo clipped the following item from the New Albany Ledger : The number of pupils enrolled In the Public Schools for the week ending Friday, February 24th, waa 867. The average daily attendance is 718. For the purpose of ascertaining the extent of our public school attendance, as a matter of information to our readers not to make a disparaging comparison between this city and our flourishing sister of the Falls we have made inquiry of one of the Trustees, and have obtained from him the following facts and figures, giving the number of public schools of each class in the city, the attendance, etc. 7 Primary School?. Pupils registered 1st quarter, 50; whole number registered 2d quarter, 1000; aggregate attendance bust quarter, 500. 2 Intermediate Schools. Pupils registered 1st quarter, 230 ; whole number registered 2d quarter, 275; average attendance, ICO. 2 Intermediate Grammar Schools. Pupils registered 1st quarter, 180 ; whole numler registered 2d quarter, 220; average attendance, 145. 2 Grammar Schools. Pupils registered 1st quarter, lbO; whole number registered -2d quarter, 210; average attendance, 1 40. 1 H igh School. Pupils registered, 7 1 ; average attendance, 65. Total registered 1st quarter, 1321 ; whole number registered, 1776 ; average attendance, 1010. s Colds, scarlet fever, bad weather, and many other causes operate against constant attendance in all our schools, but more particularly in our primary. An interesting and peculiar feature in bur school system is, that the German language is taught in all the schools except the Primary. The Trustees will, this week, lay before the Council a semi-annual report, showing the facts in regard to the Schools in full ; which, when published, it is claimed will establish the fact that we have cheaper as well as better educational advantages than any other city in the West. Our schools have done more than anything else to give our city her good name. In proof of the benefits thus brought upon her, we ask, Can any jerson point out an unoccupied house, that is not engaged ? , '
HIGHLAND COAL MINES.—In reply to a letter addressed to Mr. GEORGE PAYNE, President of the Highland Coal Company at Uniontown, Ky., we have received the following particulars in regard to said mine: Dr. D. D. Owen has made an examination of the mine and an analysis of the coal, and has made a special report on the subject. This report is now in New York, and its contents are not immediately to be obtained; but so much is recollected as to know that he locates the vein now being worked by the Company as No. 11, the contents of which are equivalent to the Youghiogheny coal in Pennsylvania. Within about 1,000 feet of the surface, there are ten other veins of workable coal, making an aggregate of about thirty feet of coal. The vein No. 11 is five feet ten inches thick; quality bituminous; and for generating steam, equal to any coal below the Falls of the Ohio river. Mr. Payne says it has been tried and found a good gas-producing coal. Its adaptation for smelting iron is not known to the Company, but for full particulars on this subject they refer to Mr. John A. Haney (of the firm of Reitz & Haney, of this city) who has used it extensively for that purpose. This coal field embraces several thousand acres. The "special report" of Dr. Owen, and a minute analysis of the coal, will be communicated to the public hereafter. mar20-tf. ———<>——— The indications are that th vote of New Jersey, in the Chicago Convention, will be given for Hon. Collins, our Consul to the Amoor, has been there over two months, laboring with the government to induce them to adopt his telegraphic project to unite Moscow, in Russia, with St. Louis, in Missouri. The popular mind is in favor of it, but the functionaries who have the direction of ways and communications across Siberia are slow. Mr. Collins has had propositions from English capitalists to construct the whole line, furnishing all materials, with two wires to begin with, at his own estimates. If Mr. Collins' plan is adopted, he thinks he can complete a line from Moscow to St. Louis in three years. ———<>——— It is proposed to erect a temporary building nt Chicago capable of holding six thousand persons, to be used as the Republican headquarters during the coming campaign, nd also for the National Convention.
I The work of renovating the mansion of : Washington, at Mount Vernon, has been i commenced, and will be completed in July.
