FOR 8CPBRISTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION', MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. . figifTlie State Sentinel says the Opposition advocate free farms for, the , homeless, and complains because free lots are not donated to manufacturers ' and mechanic?. When the Opposition propose to benefit the manufacturers and mechanics by "protecting them from foreign competition, the Democracy set up a great bowl about the farmer being slighted. , Verilyj the Sentinel and its party are hard to please. . We s presume if the Opposition should adopt the principle of free offices to destitute Democrats, and a liberal "revenue", to their pockets, with " incidental protection " to the incumbents in the eternal enjoyment of the emoluments most of the Democracy aforesaid might be numbered in the Opposition ranks in pretty short order. By the "way, we claim a patent on that invention, and entitle it, ' A new and improved method for destroying the Bogus Democratic Party." BSJThe New York Sun says in regard to , the exorbitant prices to be 'charged at Charleston : Indeed, apprehensions are entertained that many of the poorer order of delegates will be obliged to leave with empty purses and empty stomachs, should the Convention not effect a nomination on the second or third day. We advise our New York delegates to take their provisions with them, and also materials for erecting tents. It is plain that the Douglasites are to be starved into terms. The "qualifications" for delegates at the Palmetto City will be plenty of "the rhino." ' JBSyThe Worthington (Greene County) Timet, recently deceased, has been purchased by the Democracy, who intend to publish It as an organ. , ' i - ' - Comiaum'ctiferf. Importance of Newipapcr Kuowl edge. Editors Journal : In your daily issue of the fifth inst., I noticed an editorial with which I was much pleased urging upon the community the importance of subscrib- ' ing for the Weekly Journal. Now it is not any interest that I have in The Weekly Journal, over and above that held by every citizen of the City and County, or any great desire to have "Opposition to Lecomptonism" preached, that caused the article to please me so well; but it was the interest I feel in behalf of the younp, and especially the young men, into whose hands so soon are to pass the wealth and entire interests of this land. Cataline, with a keen sagacity, commenced his overthrow of the Roman Republic by attempting to corrupt the morals of the youth tuns unfitting them for either the name or service of Romans making the land his easy prey. At this fast day, no Cataline is needed, for Satan seems to keep pace with the steam and lightning, in doing his evil work. But we need a . more powerfulinflueoee to be brought to bear upon the. young, to secure them against the innumerable facilities which, with such electrical speed, are hurrying so many of our yonng to ruin. ' I know of no more powerful engine that can be brought to bear, to stay this courso of ruin, than the Newspaper. . .. Save the Bible, no influence outside the paternal roof is so potent and effectual as the Newspaper. ;- No man should ever consider himself competent to vote ja a free country, who has not been a constant Newspaper teaser, for without that all-important instrument to qualify him to choose aright, . be is but a mean vassal, and acts as he is bid by others. A Newspaper is just as indispensable to the well-being of every household, in directing the moral culture of the mental faculties, as are the cook ing concerns in the culinary department to physical growth. , '. The great trio of a free, intelligent, and permanent Republic, are the Church, the Common Cchool and the Newspaper. Keep them in a healthy condition, and so long as tbey are prosperous, our national and domestic interests are in a great measure provided for. I mention Newspapers last, yet for influence, they appear para, mount to all others. I care not how com plete the school system may be, or how thorough the instruction, in every city; hamlet, or quarter or tue lana ; or now nign the church spires rise heavenward; or how loud the sound of their bells; or how earnestly calls the priest the devotees to the santuary unless the Newspaper circulates freely and ia read thoughtfully, neither prosperity nor intelligence will ever be a marked, characteristic feature of that people, .i- . - With regard to 'the cla3 of papers,; I would say, that every man should, first and foremost, support his own county, district, or State papers, in preference to any others. Let him see that tbey are well sustained, . first by subscribing himself, and then by indncing his neighbor to go and do likewise; thereby rendering that support to bis own county paper, that his individual Interest requires he should give. Just in proportion a3 he advances the character and influence tt'- his own county press, does be promote his own interest. Were it possible, in this Democratic State of ours, to require every voter to take, pay for in advance, and read, at least one of his own county papers, for at least five years, prior to his being allowed the elective franchise, it would not be so important to preach ' opposition to Lecomptonism." One Penitentiary and half the present number of Alms Houses would be adequate to the demand fur such articles in our State. Did the political demagognes of Indiana love the people half as much as they do the people's dear money, and in their exceeding devotion and tender regard, place a Newspaper in every household, though the enterprise should be sustained, as are our Town- " ship Libraries ere ten years roll around, Indiana would be amongst the very brightest tars in the Constellation of this Republic. The Supervisors of San Francisco, California, offer to give a square of ground worth $150,000, for a State house, if the seat of government may be removed to that city from Sacramento. The project of removal is being much agitated. It is considered sure that the House Committee on Territories will report in favor of organizing the Territories of Dacotah, Nevada and Pike's Peak. The latter Territory has been called Jefferson, but the. designation is not so much favored as "Johosa," an Indian name, which means "dwellers on the mountain peaks." , A Sharp TRAKSACTJON.An exchange paper states that a fellow in Veaango county, Pa., profited in the following manner by the "oil excitement "jiow prevailing bo extensively in the western part of Pennsylvania. He bored a hole on his land, poured a barrel of oil in it, and then called bis neighbors to see the large yield. . . The result was that he sold his land, for , $2,000 in cash, pocketed the money, oilea his boots, and "slid.". . ..... ; . ; .:, , The will of John Rose, in addition to the bequest of $300,000 to the 'city of New York for the purpose of founding an agricultural school, donates $3,000 to the town of Wethersfield,' Conn, the native place ot the donor, and $2,000 to the town of Rocky Hill, Conn., on condition that these amounts be invested in farms for the benefit of the poor. $5,000 is also donated to the Orphan Asylum of Charleston.. (TWZ,Umf8 OJV IIJJS'O, J Z.JKOJB iJL lot of these truly and justly celebrated, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of the nnrivaled Stewart's Patent, and at the onlv agency in this city, ,v ThoM. Scantlin No. 29 Main ttreet, between . . . .. First and Second. ' : The flist premium was awarded to this Stove as the best coal or wood cooking stove at the Southwestern Indiana District Fair, held at this place. . No stove ever devised combines as numerous or Important scientific principles as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes and roasts at the same moment, without one dish imparting flavor to another or producing that sameness of taste in meats aaer gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidious of taste, makns so insuperable an objection to every other cooking stove now in nse. With one-fonrth of the fuel employed in the best of stoves now In use, this most perfect and complete cooking apparatos performs, simultaneously and more perfectly than hits ever before been accomplished, everything required in the best provided families, so far as cooking is concerned. When,' too, tt i borne in mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, t.nd the fire i.-r at- its height, without the smallest unpleasantness from the change of temperature, so little is the heat from it diffused externally, an inducement is presented for its universal employment never heretofore presented in any Other stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest wonder, how heat is so eoono-. mined and difTnsed Within the store itself, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a place where, with any of the stoves now in nse, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather more particularly, to breathe with comfort. : - ' t,. "' '- For 20 years Mr.. Stewart has been employed in perfecting this stove, and since last February, he has obtained three new patents for improvements, which, in ills opinion, and the opi nton of all who have examioed it, made it perfect. Within four years twenty thousand of them have been sold, under a full guarantee, and not one has been returned. These remarkable results have emboldened a host of stove maunfacturers to imitate the Stewart Stove, but, save in exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expired) enables them to give, they no more resemble Stewart's than chalk does cheese. These imitations are known by various names, but they are alf deficient in various particulars, such -as the air-tight boxes, by which full control Is kept over the lire, anil of the heat, by a draft damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a constant current of cold air on th outside of the fire box, which again becomes heated air. and, passing into the oven, ia made available for cooking fnrtThe agent and subscriber Ik receiving the best lmitatiou of the Stewart Stove, called M Pride uf the West," which he will be happy to dispose of at two-thirds of the price of the genuine Stewart's. It is possible,- -of eourse, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's. The " Stewart " is sold by tbe agent, under a full guarantee to perform as recommended, and if, within three months from purchasing, any fault is found with them, he w iil take them back and refund the money. Housekeeper will bear ia mind, then, that the genuine Stewart Stove, bought at tbe only agent's here,.wil), with halt the labor and one., fourth the fuel, do more and better cooking than any other stove ever constracted. - THOS.
