Carrolton, Bracelet, Ark. River, it. Wayne, Cincinnati, outlinriir.r, Louisville. ...... The <Weather>, yesterday, wa3 cold and windy. The dust was flying at a most disagreeable rate, and the navigation of our streets was a perilous undertaking to those having weak eyes.. ......The <River> is about at a stand. ......<Freights>, as we have been predicting for sometime, have finally advanced in almost every article. The following are now correct quotations: Pork 60c per bbl; flour 50c per bbl; corn 30c per sack; tobacco $5 per hhd; eggs 75c per bbl; hay $10@$12 per ton; lard 15c per keg; cattle $6@$7 per head; sheep 75c; whisky 90@$1 per bbl. Pound freights 25c. per 100 lbs. Way freights 35c per 100 lbs. Notwithstanding some heavy shipments, freight seems to be on the increase. ......The <Bracelet>, which was detained some time above on account of the heavy wind, arrived yesterday afternoon. She had a fine load, but managed to stow away some corn. Mr. Edwards remembered the printers, as he is wont to do, and furnished us with files of late Louisville papers. ......The river column of the <Enquirer> has been greatly improved since Mr. PHY. D. VIETS, a graduate of this office, has taken charge of it. Mr. Viets is an energetic collector of news, and will add much to the value of that paper. We wish him success in whatever he may undertake. ......The following letter was sent to us by our friend E. BALLENGER. It was written at Terre Haute yesterday: <Kate Sarchet> passed Terre Haute at 7 o'clock Monday morning, loaded to the guards with pork and wheat—the best trip of the season. She was detained nearly all last night by wind at Clinton bridge. Left the <Done> at Clinton taking on freight.— River falling slowly. ......The steamer <Union> left for Louisville yesterday morning. She brought a fine cargo out of Green River, tor a manifest of which we are indebted to her gentlemanly clerk, Mr. E. C. Jenkins. ......The <Scioto> will not be down to-night. She lays up for a few days. She leaves Louisville on another trip on Thursday next, and will be here at her usual time on Friday. The <James Montgomery> will be due here to-day. Our shippers are hoping to get rid of some more of their freights through her instrumentality. ......The <Baltic> was here on Sunday. She received 3235 sacks corn, l20 casks bacon, 12 bbls eggs, 4 bbls sundries, from I. A. Crane & Co.; and 100 bbls eggs, 50 bbls apples and beans, from P. G. O Riley & Co. ......The <Peytona> arrived yesterday morning about 4 o'clock. She came down nearly empty, lay here all day yesterday, and received a full cargo. Among her shipments were 175 hhds tobacco, 88 casks bacon, 33 bales hay, 5 bbls eggs from I. A. Crane & Co.; 3235 sks corn, 120 casks bacon, 387 bbls pork from steamer <John Tompkins>, 5120 sacks corn, 37 hhds tobacco, 9 tcs meat, P. G. O'Riley & Co. The <Peytona> left enough freight for at least three more boats of her size. ......The new <Uncle Sam> will be due from New Orleans this afternoon, on her way to Louisville. ......Capt. J. A. Cotton, of the New Orleans and Bayou Sara Mail, is expected at Louisville to contract for two new boats for that trade. ......Capt. Spotts of the <Eclipse> has been awarded $15,000—his claim for damages done to the Eclipse during the tornado at New Orleans by the Board of underwriters. Capt. Spotts also keeps the boat to hold or dispose of as he deems best. Receipts by River. FROM WABASH RIVER—<MASONIC GEM.—657 sacks corn, 343 bbls pork, P. G. ' An Ohio paper calls Senator Pugh a type of Democracy. He is considerably battered and does not make a fair impression. The finest bull owned by Cassius M. Clay came near losing bis life the othur day, being brushed by a falling tree. This is a niw and we should judge unprofitable method of grazing cattle. Some poor fellows have the misfortune to always be the subject of practical joke. In such case3 it is very generally true that the butt of the joke can't see tho point of it. , Mr. Holt is lessening our mail facilities in all directions. He is the greatest mail-eon-tractor in the country. One would think that a writing master of all others must drive the most profitable trade, as he is always engaged in a flourish ing business. The term fugitive, as applied to the poetry which fills the corners of newspapers, is not a bad one. Such, poetry is generally of the common run. Tbe value of most products increases with their scarcity, but air is not more valuable on aeount of its rarity.
