FRIDAY MORNING.. . ..MARCH 9 Opposition State Ticket FOR GOVERNOR, HERT ? . LANE, of Montgomery. FOR iHUTEHANT GOVERNOR, ; t OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. ' FOR SECRETARY OF STATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of Randolph.' FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke. : : FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. ..; FOR ATTORJTIY GENERAL ... JAMES G. JONES, of VanderborghFOR REPORTER OF SCPREH COCRT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. - FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange: . . FOR SUPERINTENDENT OP PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. . JgyThe Evansville Journal says John McLean is its first choice for the Presidency. Terre Haute Journal.. You are mistaken, Mr. Cookerly. MrBates is our first choice, and we have so frequently expressed ourselves. You were led to make the above remark, by an article which we copied from the Cincinnati Ga .sttte contributed to that paper by a Pittsburg correspondent in which Mr'. McLean is declared the first choice, and Mr. Bates the second, of the Opposition In that portion of Pennsylvania where the writer resides. We copied the extract "solid" with using quotation marks, and you mistook it for editorial. Please make the correction. We do not wish to appear inconsistent And vascil. la ting. t&m George W. Julian, of W ayne county, in a recent speech, offers $1000 to any man who can produce evidence that ho is an Abolitionist or, that he ever proposed to interfere with slavery where it exists under State law. This proposition of Julian, and the late moderate speech of Seward, is a cheering evidence that the more extreme Republicans are coming down to the conservative position. The tendency of the times is decidedly conservative, and any public man who expects to stand well in public esteem must conform his views to this sentiment. The moderate Oppositionists of Southern Indiana have had much to do In bringing about this result. ——>A correspondent of the New Albany <Tribune> writes a very enthusiastic description of French Lick and West Baden Springs in Orange county, and also of the large, numerous, and interesting caverns which abound in that region. Another singular feature in that part of the country is the rivers that sink into the ground and re-appear in the course of a few miles. There are several such streams. The whole country, roundabout, seems to be honeycombed with caverns and sinks. ———<>——— THE INDIANA GOLD MINES.—A correspondent of the Cincinnati <Gazette> writes from Bloomington, Ind., Feb. 28: Having just returned from the "Brown County Gold Mines," of this State, and thinking that a report would not be uninteresting, I describe matters as I found them. The place where the gold has been discovered in the largest quantities is about nine miles from Nashville, and five from Morgantown. It is at the foot of a range of hills which form nearly a half circle. At the base of the hills is a creek, in which there are already some few sluices arranged. The gold has mostly been in dust, although some few small lumps have been found. The largest I saw was about the size of a grain of corn. It is supposed by some old Californians that the dust has been washed down off the hills. They intend to ' commence digging as soon as the weather will permit. 1 found fifty or sixty persons engaged in washing. They have made as high as $6 30 per day. The gold is of a very fine quality, and is sold in Columbus for twenty-two dollars per ounce, which I am told is very high for California gold. ———<>——— THE VINCENNES POST OFFICE ROBBERY.— Sheriff Barron, while at Jeffersonville few days ago, (whither he had gone to deliver over Bowles, convicted of horse stealing at the recent term of our Circuit Court,) had an interview with a man named John Winter, who, together, with Frank E. Riley and Adam Snyder, was recently sent to the penitentiary from Owen county for robbery. Winter confessed that he, Riley, and Snyder robbed the post-office of our city on the night of the 17th of October last, and that after rifling the bags of their contents, they threw them into the river above Hasselbach's distillery. He also confessed that the same party had robbed the post-office at Mt. Vernon, about the same time—and that they had broken into a dwelling house at Evansville and stolen several hundred dollars. They were in the city only a day or two previous to the robbery of the post-of-five—were strangers here, and had no confederates.—<Vin. Sun>. ———<>——— Silver and Lead Mines in Mississippi. The Macon (Miss.) Beacon says r Jt has ' long been known to the older settlers of this county, that a mine of silver existed somewhere in Ibis region of the country, but the exact locality bus, until of late, been artfully concealed. It was known to the Indians before their removal, and they were often seen with the precious metal in their possession, but they stoutly resisted all pale faces' attempts at persuade ing them tQ reveal the secret. .In the hills about Somerville, large cavities can at this day be seen, the only and fruitless result of the white man's labor, but a son of the Emerald Isle happened lately to put his foot into it. The ore was sent to New York to be tested, and the result was a yield of C3 per cent, of ' pure silver. - The discoverer took a bee-line for Columbus and entered the land. All the adjoining lands, which were public, have also been entered. Wm. Smith, Superintendent of the Merchants' Exchange, publishes in the Cincinnati Price Current, bis annual statement of the Pork packing business of the country at large. The footings show a total decrease from last year ot 114,213 bogs, which is 4$ per cent. The decrease in the average weight of the hogs packed amounts to 2,491,607 lbs., which is eleven-sixteenths of one per cent, and is equal to 1C,94C hogs. This, added to the decrease in number, makes the total decrease this year, 131,159 bogs. The decrease in the yield of -lard is placed at 870,187 lbs. The falling off in the shipments east, by four of the principal railroad routes, is 63,000.
y VARIETIES. AtL the Opposition papers id Delaware, except one, are in favor of sending delegates
j to the Chicago Convention. t Col. J. T. Pickett of Kentucky has been appointed Consul to Vera Cruz, vice R. B. J. Twyman, recalled. A Bee-keeper'g Convention is annonuced to be held at Cleveland on the 15th of March... . The State of Illinois has contributed $3,675 to the Mt. Vernon fund, through the Ladies' Mt. Vernon Association. , . Tue project of forming a new State out of portions of West Tennessee, Southern Kentucky and Northern Mississippi, has been carried in the Tennessee Legislature. The St. Louis Republican says that on the 22d of February the directors of the Pacific road opened the southwest branch of it to the junction at Pacific city. RISE IN THE RIVER.—The late heavy rains have caused quite a flood in the Wabash.v At many points the banks are overflowed, and the business of our millers is considerably affected by it.—<Lafayette Courier>. ——>Two canal boats have arrived here from Evansville, and returned again this week. The canal is now in very good order, and considerable business is done on it. —<Petersburg Reporter>. B6fIn the Circuit Court during the past week, the case of Mrs. Harriet Judah, vs. Sam'l Judah, on application for divorce, has occupied considerable time of the Court. The divorce was granted, but other questions conuected therewith bave not bee i disposed of. Vin. Sun. ... CANAL OPEN.—We are informed that the Canal South, is now full of water and in good navigable condition. One or two boats were to have started for Worthington, Newberry, and other points below, yesterday. There will be a heavy freight business on this canal during the coming season. —<T. H. Journal>. THE wind blew terribly here on the 22d ult., and we learn that it blew the fences down considerably through the country. Nearly all the weatherboarding was blown off one side of the aquaduct [sic] between here and Washington. Our exchanges mention the severity of the wind in their various localities on that day.—Petersburg Rep>. We learn that in many places through this county the wheat is much injured by the cold weather the past winter, and the indications are that the wheat crop will be light. We understand that the wheat which was plowed in, did not stand the winter as well as that which was harrowed in. If the spring should be favorable, it is quite likely the wheat crop may turn out better than anticipated at present.—<Petersburg Reporter>. Settlement of the Judah Divorce Suit. As we stated in our last, Mrs. Judah was granted a divorce from her husband Sam'l Judah, Esq., and by agreement of counsel, (concurred in by Judge Burke,) it was decided to give the wife the entire ownership and control of the home farm, including stock, furniture, kc, and the absolute right to all the Indianapolis property paying Judah 60 per cent, of the net protits of the lot on which he hasererlcda b!x-k of buildings, and paying all iiid"btedness thereon. The value of this property is about $50,000. Mrs. J. also gets all the city property, including Lot No. 91, and one-third of Scott's block. The Court gave the mother exclusive jurisdiction of the minor children. Vin. Sun. At the South-Western Indiana District Fair, held here October, 1859, there were but two premiums offered for cooking stores one for the best wood costing stove, and one for the best coal cooking stove. The Economist took the FJRST PREMIUM FOB THE BEST ..OOKING STOVE FOR WOOD. Roelker, Klusnian k Co took the first premium for their cooking stove tor coal. No other premiums were offered. The large silver medal was awarded to the Economist at the New York State Fair ; and the first premium at the United States Fair held at Chicage. and twelve other State aud Couoty Fairs in ISo'.i. In no branch of mechanical ait has there been a more apparent advance than in tae manufacture of stoves. It is but a few years since the very name was a novelty, representing a h-.ige, shapeless structure, almost as devoid of use as ornament, These have gradually given place to patterns of grace and utility ; nutil the varieties our markets now present have almost exhausted the vocabulary of names ; and the different phases the motal is made to assume, would astonish old Vulcan himself. In style and finish, the improvement has been real, leaving nothing to be desired on that point, but the severe competition in price, to which they have been subjected, has deprived them of many of the more substantial qualities desirable. This seems more especially to have beeu the case in reference to cook stoves an article of domestic economy that has more to do with scolding wives and crotchety servants than most people imagine. The public have long sought an improvement in this article, and we believe are ready to iay any reasonable price for a cooking stove, if it only jiossesses the merits of size, weight, convenience, durability, economy, and jierfectioa of manufacture. These qualities aeein to be possessed most fully in the Economist a new stove, perfected and brought out the past season, by Messrs. Tread well, Perry & Norton, of Albany.' We heard no. much of this stove, and it looked, so much like a atove intended for use, that we concluded to try them, aud the result of the experiment convinces us that the proprietors, in their determination to make the best tone in the world, hare succeeded. We regard the Economist as possessing all the merits alwve enumerated as the great stove of the day far in advance of anything ever attempted iu tho line of stoves, perfect in all its appointments, and true to its name in durability and the use of fuel. Among the many conveniences attached to it, may be mentioned a largo oven, with hooks arranged, for suspending meats while roasting. A copper water tank, holding from 12 to 25 gallons warming closet, broiling hearth, fc., tic. The broiling hearth is one of the most noticeable features of this remarkable stove. There never has been, to our knowledge, uny broiling fixture that was really satisfactory iu its eperatiou. 1'he proprietors of this stove have been conducting a series of experiments upon broiling, eliciting some valuable facts, and resulting in the inventiou of a gridiron adapted to this stove, which has been Becuved by letters pateut, aud is one of the most admirable things of the kind we ever saw broiling without smoke, and keeping the coals iu a constaut glow. We are always glad to do justice to mechanical improvements, and especially such as contribute so largely to the general good, as the one above mentioned. TLos. Scantliu's, No. 29 Main street,, between First and Second. The fiist premium was awarded to this Stove as the best coal or wood cooking stove at tlie Southwestern Indiana District Fair, held at this place. No stove ever' devised 'combines as numerous ur imKH'tant scientific principles as. this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, hakes aud roasts at the same mo ment, without onadiiih imparting flavor to another, or pr.Mluciiig that ftameiiess of taste in meats and gravies, which, to the. delicate aud. fastidious rrl taste, makes so iusuiienible an ob.iection to every other cooking stoe now Iu nsei With une-fourtli of (he fuel employed in the bet, t of stoves now iu use. this meet perfect aud complete cooking appa-' ratus performs, simultaneously and more perfectly than has ever before been accomplished, everything required in the best provided .families, so far as cooking is concerned. hen, too, it Is borne la mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, and the fire is at its height, without the smallest unpleasantness from the change of temperatnr, so little is the heat from it di Aimed externally, au inducement is presented for its universal employment uever heretofore presented in any otlMr stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as' well as its greatest wonder, how beat Is so economized and dirt used within the stove itself, and so. little perceptibly escapes jju to the' kitchen, a place where, with any of the stoves .now in use, other thau Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather, more particularly, to bleat lie with comfort. For 20 years Mr. Stewart has been employed tu ' perfecting this stove, ami since last February, he liasobtained three new patents, for improvements, w hich, iu his opinion, and the opinion of ail who have examined it, made it jierfeet. Within four years Imentii (Aoaxiarf of f hew have been sold, under, a full guarantee, and not oue has lieen returned. Therto remarkable results have emtioldened a host of stove manufacture re to imitate the Stewart Stove, but, save in exterior np)earance, which the old patents (having expired) enables them to give, they no more resemble Stewart's than chalk dues cheesed These imitations are known by various names, but they are all deficient in Various particulars, such as the air-tight boxes, by which full coutroLis kept over the fire, and of the heat, by a draft damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a con--stant current of cold air on the outside of the fire bos, which again becomes heated air, and, passing into the even, ia made available for cooking jurposes. The agent and subscriber is receiving 4he best' Imitation ef the Stewart Stove, called M Pride of the West," which ha will be happy to dispose of at two-thirds of the price of the geuuine Stewart's. It is possible, of course, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's. . ' . ; , The " Stewart " is sold by the agent, under a full guarantee to iiertorm as recommended, aud if, within three months from purchasing, any fault is found with them, he will take them back and refund the money. Housekeepers, will bear in mind, then, that the genuine Stewart Stove, bonght at the only agent's here, will, with half the labor and onefoorth the fuel, do-more ami better cooking tuais any other stove ever constructed.
