THCBSDAT MOESIKG.. .....3IABC1T8 Opposition State Ticket. FOR GOVERNOR, HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. rOR LIEUTENANT OOVKKMOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wnvne. FOR SECRETARY OK STATE, WILLIAM A. TEELLE, of IUndolili. FOR TREASURER OF STATU, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, ot Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. A New Tick. Our neighbors of the interrogative organ, on First street. Rre now on a new tack. A few days ago, the Oppos-'tion State platform was most deplorably (for tbera) conservative : now it is terribly radical. The Enquirer of Monday morning says, commenting on oar statement that the platform was M conserratire and national " " This is a broad assertion of the Journals, entirely unwarranted either by the platform itself or by what people say of it. " What did the Enquirer itself say on the 23th of February on' this subject. Let us see. In an article headed " Backing Down, " that paper moralizes as follows. ' " The late Republican State Convention did not re-affirm the doctrines of the Philadelphia Convention. It refused to entertain a motion, even, not to support a candidate for the Presidency who was not a Republican in 1856. " la this action does not Mr. Lane, the Republican nominee for Governor, with bi3 entire party, back down from the position the same party assumed iu 1856 ?" . . . . And more of the same sort. The position of 1856 the Enquirer, iu the same article, asserts was very ultra. If the Opposition in 1860 "backs down" from that position, what do they become but "conservative and national," just as we have claimed. The Enquirer must learu not to tell two different stories so close together. If it does, it is sure to be caught iu its pettifogging. We verily believe, from this secimen of versatility, that the Democratic organ here can beat even the State Sentinel, which changed from Anti-LecuinptonUtu to Lecomptouism in less than a month in 1857, and from Anti-Douglasisiu to Douglusistn iu nearly as short a time in 1859. With a little more practice, our neighbor will equal the New York Herald or the Sentinel in inconsistency. JtfirBy an inadvertence, B. was inserted in this paper the other day instetid of W. in G. W. Julian's name. The Enquirer, iu trying to make a poiut out of the oversight, speaks about "rebukiug the silly impertinence of the Journal?' Any impertiueuce we may have beeu guilty ot does not begin to compare with the private assertion; of an attache of the Enquirer that we are AIhjlitionists made to injure the circulation of our Weekly. We have been guilty of no impertinence toward that paper. The editors assumed to know all about the history of prominent Oppositionists in this State (which, by the way, they pick up from the refuse of the State Sentinel and Terre Haute Journal); and we merely essayed to show that they were not so well osted as they pretended to be. They spoke of Joshua Julian ! which is about ou a par with thvir knowledge of Indiana men in general. We see no cans for their getting t ii iltd. If they can uot tttke a harmless joke aud carry cm a little controversy without using abuse and inueudoes, they had Letter try something else than the newspaper business. ftf The Enquirer folks are extremely touchy. They say that we object to their issuing a Sunday paper. Now this we pronounce untrue. In an article announcing their intention to issue their paper oc Suudsy morning, they stated that they did so to save Sunday work. As this was an iutimation that a Monday paper could not be issued without Sunday woik, we, in self defense, stated that we issued our paper on Monday, and did not do Sunday work either. We did this to set ourselves right with those of our subscribers who wish to see the Sabbath observed. We made this exculpation of ourselves, while specially disclaiming any right to interfere with our neighbors' business. This we h:id a pefect right to do it was our duty to ourselves and subscribers. In the article to which we allude, the Enquirer descends to abuse calling us Abolitionists saying we .can't refrain from poking our noses into other people's business, &c. This we pronounce contemptible, considering that it is not true. Such a course will meet with no sympathy down in this latitude. Arguments and reason must be getting scarce around at that office, when such talk is indulged in. It is reported that Gov. Foote will in all probability assume the editorial control of the Nashville Banner, and through it advocate the claims of some such men as Crittenden or Bell for the Presidency. If Foote does this, he will be the third man who has gone to Tennessee from the cotton region to edit anti-Democratic newspajiers, alter having been & Democratic member of the U. S. Senate. Vieksburgh Sun. We are informed that when Gov. Foote was here, several months ago, be expressed himself decidedly for Edward Bates for the Presidency. The other two persons alluded to by the Sun iu the above extract, uie Jere. Clemens and Solon Borland, of the Memphis Eagle And Enquirer. Foote was formerly U. S. Senator from Mississippi, Clemens from Alabama, and Borland from Aikansas.
Madtaoit and Indt nnpolin Utllroid. Our intelligent and well-posled Imliami- j polis correspondent (R. O N.) is now on a visit to Carrollton, Ky., at the mouth of Kentucky river. He writes us a letter, which ; we should be glad to publish in full, but in j consequence of an accumulation of readiug matter, caused by " pieing onr forms" last week, we can only copy that portion which speaks of the above-named excelleut railroad. This feature of accommodating the local business of a railroad is a good one, and one which will always pay any road in the long rnu. It is the local business, after all, rather than the precarious through business, which is the life-blood of roost railroads and short steamboat lines. Our correspondent says .This Road is well conducted, and no road is doing a better local business. Every farm-house and cross-roads is a station. They will stop and let one off or take one on at every place on the route, which no other road we have traveled oa will do. We have seen them wait as much as five minutes, for persons coming in the distance, waving their handkerchiefs, and the Superintendent and Conductor would meet them some distance off and help them carry their children to the train. Mr. Bran bam, the superintendent, and Mr. Wolf, conductor, are both perfect gentlemen, and do all in their power to make their guests feel comfortable, and at home. The Road is not as smooth as some other roads, neither do they run as fast, though smooth enough and fast enough for all ordinary purposes. The country is improving very rapidly all along the Hoe of the road. " Woodman spare that tree " has not been observed, but all along the line you can see that the ax has lieen applied diligeutly. Franklin, Edinburg, Columbus, North Vernon, and in fact most all of the towns, are improving very rapidly. " R. O'N." also praises in glowing terms the slendid steamer Jacob Strader the Louisville and Cincinnati mail boat, which carried him from Madison to Carrollton. Her accommodations aud fare he thinks unexcelled. The Hebermont Grape. The editor of the Louisville Journal has received the following' letter from Mr. Nicholas Longworth of Cincinnati, accompanied by some of the seed spoken of. We presume our grape raisers could get some of the seed, if they desire it, by writing to Mr. Longworth : -' I have sent you by express some seed of the Hebermont grape, for distribution among your subscribers who take a deep interest in grae culture for wine or table use. The tlebermont is of superior quality as a wine aud table grape; hardy, and better suited for your soil than ours ; of more vigorous growth than any other. I have had a shoot grow 45 feet in one season ; in a soil like ours it will be more vigorous. In raising plants from the Peed of the Catawba, ninetenth.", or mote, iu back, more or less, to its grandfather, the i-otnmo.i Foi. The Hebermont has no Mich aiiccttiir. I know no grape so likely to be improved by its seed. A lady in Indiana sent ine two bunches of grapes last tall a seedling ot the Hebermont ; the grape white; double the size of the parent; a long grape, and as soft a pulp as auy foreign grape. The lady will place the cuttings in the hauds of a nurseryman, to le raised for sale. A3 a wine grape it has not yet been tested. It will be our own fault, if we do not, by looking up our best native grapes nnd planting their see., soon leave the best wine and table grapes of Europe in the background. If fine table and wine grapes are found in ptrts of Europe, where a native grape is never seen, in our States, not so far north, where wild grapes alxMiud, by selecting the best and planting the seed, we shall soon surpass the best wine and table grapes of Europe. At the South-Weetern Indiana District Fair, held here October, 15.VJ, there were but two premiums offered for cooking stoves one for toe nest wood coKing8tove,and one tor the best coal cooking stove. The Kconomist took the FIRST PREMIUM FOR THli BEST .OuKLNU STOVE FOR WOOO. Roelker, Rlusman 6c Co took the first premium for their cooking stove for coal. No other premiums were ottered. , 't he large silver medal was awarded to trie economist at the .Mew York .ate Fair ; and the first premium at the United States air held at Chicago, und twelve other State and County Fairs in lbo:t. Iu no braucu of mechanical ait has thore been a more appareut advance than in trie manufacture ot etovts. It is but a few years siuce the very nallio was a novelty, representing huge, sbupclets structure, almost as devoid of use as oruanieut, these have gradually given p ace to patterns of grace aud utility ; until the varieties onr markets now present have almost exhausted the vocabulary of names ; and the different phases tne metal is mane to acsumc, would astonish old Vulcan himself. In style aud finish, the improvement has been rsal, luaving nothing to be desired ou that point, but the severe competition in price, to which they have beeu subjected, has deprived them of many of the more substantial qualities dobirable. This seems iuoreesiecially to have been the case iu reference to cook stoves an ariicle of domestic economy that has more to do with scolding wives and crotchety servants than most people imagine. The public have long sought an improvement in this article, and we believe ace ready to pay any reasonable price for a okiug stove, if it ouly possesses the merits of size, weight, convenience. durability, economy, aim pel lection of tnanulacture These qualities seeui to be possessed most fully in the F.con;niist a new etove, perfected and brought out the past season, by Messrs. Trcadweli, Perry & Morton, of Albany. We beard so much of thia stove, and it looked so much like a stove intended for in?, that we concluded to try them, and the result of the experiment convinces us that the proprietors, in their determination to make tho bust itove ih tlte wttrbl. have succeeded. We regard the Eeoimiiiiit as possessing all the merits alaive enumerated as the great stove of the day far in ad vance of anything ever attempted iu the line of stoves, pertect in all its appoiutineuts, and true to its name in durability anil the ueof fuel. WM. lot of these truly aud justly celebrated, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of the unrivaled Stewart's Pateut, aud at ttie only agency in tins city, Thos. Scantling, Xo. 20 Main street, between first and Second. The hist premium was awarded to this Stove as tne best coal or wood cooking stove at the South western Indiana District Fair, held at this place. No store ever devised combines as numerous or imsrtaut scientific principled as this of Stewart's. it broils, boils, bakes and roasts at the same bio tuent, without one dish imparting flavor to another, or producing that sameuess of taste in moats and gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidious of taste, makes so insuperablo an objection to every other cooking stove now in use. With one-fourth of the fuel employed in the best of stoves now iu use, tins mast perfect snd complete cooking atom ratus perforins, simultaneously and more perfectly than has ever htdore been accomplished, everything required in the best provided fatuities, so tar as cooking is concerned. When, too, it is liorne iu mind that the mot delicate fcraules can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, and the tire is at its height, without the smallest unpleni.iuiiipa from the change of teinteruture,so little is the heat from it diiTtir-cd externally, an inducement is presented for its uuiversal employ ment never heretofore presented iu any other stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest wonder, how beat la so economised and diffused within the stove itself, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a place where, witti any of the stoves now In use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather more particularly, to breathe with comfort. For 2o years Mr. Stewart has been employed in perfecting this stove, and since last February, ba has obtained three new patents for improvement, which, in his opinion, and the opinion of all who bava examined it, made it lierftct. Within four years twenty thousand of them have been sold, trader a full guarantee, and not one has been returned. Thase remarkable results have emboldened a host of Btove manufacturers to imiratetlte Stewart Stove, but, save in exterior apiearance, which the old pile nl-, (having expired) enables them to give, they no more rescinnie Stewart s tnan ctiairc does cheese. These imitations are known by various names, but they aie all deficient in various particulars, such as the ait -tight boxes, by which full control is kept over trie nre, airi ot tne neat, oy a dralt damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a constant current of cold air on the outside of the Dra box, w hid, agaiu becomes heated air, aud, passing iuio me oven, is niaae available lor cooking urposes. The ageut and subacriter is receiving the best Imitation of the Stewait Stove, called "Pride of the West," which he will be happy to dispose of at two-thirds of the price of the genuine Stewart's. It is possible, of course, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's. 1 he " Stewart " is sold by ( he agent, under a full guarantee toerform as rccunuieudttd, and if, within three mouths Irorn pttrchaaiiig, any fault is found w ith them, he will take them back aud refund the money.
