CiF" WV arc authortted to annotate f As name of JOEL F. SntRWOOD, a a candidate for the office of Marshal, at the city election iu April next. f'1'15 Daxikl Fanshaw, the oldest employing printer in the city of New York, died en the 20tU ult. He had been in busiues?, at the time of bis death, forty-six years. Writers say of him There are two incidents in his career that entitle him to honorable mention and remembrance by the craft. He was the first mi adopt the use of rollers instead of balls in an inking apparatus for the hand-press, which be did against the strong opposition of the journeymen-pressmen. lie was, also, the first to employ printing machines, adopting the Treadwell press, driven by mule power. When the American Bible Society was established, he became and continued its printer until the Society established an office of its own. s Mr. Fanshaw's history shows what can be accomplished by two elements of character Industry and Economy for to these alone was he indebted for his wealth, lie was a practical printer, and in 1816, when we became bis journeyman, he had just started a "Book Office" at No. 11 Cliff street. Bible and Tract Societies wre then in their infancy. Mr. Fanshaw obtained, at low prices, the printing of the Bible and Tract Societies. His was a madel office. The most rigid economy was wbsprved in everything. Nothing was wasted. More care was taken ot types, and of paper, and better work was required, than iu any other office. Mr. F. kept rigid watch and scrutiny over the minutest details of business. He was the first and hist man at the office, opening it himself with the dawn of day, and closing it at a late hour. His fortune was made up of savings. Opposition Convention. The ilissouri Opposition Convection met at Jefferson City on the 29th ult. Most of the counties were represented. The attendance was large and impressive, and the utmost harmony and enthusiasm prevailed. The Convention organized by appointing Hon. A. Leonard, President, and the usual number of Vice Presidents and Secretaries. The President, on taking the chair, an nounced the object of the Convention to be the nomination of Ed v ard Uutes for President of the United Suites. Resolutions opposing the arrant heresies of the Democratic party in regard to slavery in the Territories there-opening of slavery agitation and the African slave trade oposed to the treasonable avowal that the elevation to the Presidenry in regular constitutional mode of one candidate of any party, is in itself, sufficient cause for a dissolution of the Union granting free homestead to actual settlers to the doctrine of secession as promulgated by ultra Southern leaders, and declaring Edward Bates the choice of the Convention lor the Presidency, were unanimously adopted. On motion, a committee was appointed to report an electoral ticket, when the Convention adjourned. TilS Cuban Cor: rettinrr up a niuiruL or Zouaves at Havana, tor the deteuSe of the Island. Now this line of Coods has become an almost iuilisiensable part of the stock of every general Dry Goods store from the crowded city to the cross-road stand.
