MONI AT MORNING, .. MARCH 5 Opposition State Ticket. FOB GOVERNOR, HENRY S. LANE, of Montgomery. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, OLIVER P. MORTON, of Wayne. rOR SECRETARY OF STATE, WILLIAM A. PEELLE, of Randolph. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, JONATHAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, ALBERT LANGE, or Vigo. FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL, JAMES G. JONES, of Vanderburgh. FOR REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, of Marion. FOR CLERK OF SUPREME COURT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrange. FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF TUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. A Fair Understanding. We hear of an American or Whig, now and then, who thinks that bis party did not get a fair show in the Opposition State Convention of the 22d ult. We are glad, however, to say that such unreasonable complaining is but little indulged in. Let ua look at this matter a few moments, and see if there is any ground for faultfinding. Primarily and moat important in the whole matter the platform is conservative and national. Our readers have had an opportunity to read it, and know this to be so. No person claims otherwise. This faet is acknowledged by both Democrats and Rugged-Issue Republicans. This is a vital point gained by the Conservatives. The Whigs should be satisfied, because out of the nine candidates on the Opposition ticket, eight were Whigs before the breaking up of old parties ! What more could they ask than this liberality toward them a platform embodying the old Whig doctrine on the slavery question, and eight-ninths of the candidates. Mr. James G. Jones a representative American was nominated. This consideration, and that of the conservative platform, ought to satisfy all reasonable Americans. We now give other reasons : In 1856, the Americans polled 22,33(5 votes in Indiana; the Republicans polled 94,375. The Americans then had an organization in the State. Now they have none, and, besides, many of their members are now Conservative Republicans. On the basis of 185C, if it now existed, they would be entitled to(say) twocandidatesoutof nine (within a fraction), on a fair division. But it most be recollected that while the distinctive Americans have decreased, or at any rate not increased, the Republicans have increased largely. Besides, the Americans have no organization, thus losing the greater part of theii' strength. Thus, where a fair proportion in 1S5G would have been two to nine, it is now probably not more than one to nine, if the relative number of votes of Americans and Republicans in the State were known. Now for another view of the subject: It was understood in our County Convention, after a full interchange of views between the Americans and naturalize. 1 citizens and it is so understood by all that the question of Nativisin is buried out of sight in this campaign. Those concerned have made a fair compromise on the Naturalization laws as they are, and full protection after naturalization. On this ground our County Convention instructed for a representative man from each party Mr. Jones, American, and Mr. Lange, adopted citizen. They were both nominated, and stand before the people in that light. It is a fair understanding, and foreign-born citizens will support Mr. Jones in consideration of A mericaus supporting Mr. Lunge. It is a matter of good-faith all around. Auy threats from either party operates like a two-edged sword. If Americans scratch Mr. Lange's name from the ticket, the other party will scratch Mr. Jones's. Thus both might be beaten. So it is the interest of the friends of both, as it is their wish, to carry out this agreement faithfully by going the whole ticket. In this view of the subject, we argue that one from each of these parties on the ticket is a fair proportion and a fair offsetTwo of either to one of the other would have been unfair, and might have created trouble. Tho ticket is best as it is. We believe that all the Opposition down here will go in for the whole ticket. Messrs. Lange and Jones are both well qualified for their respective offices, and Americans and adopted citizens are content to support them both in good faith, and forget former deferences. Death of a Gypsy Kino. Owen Stanley, King of the Gypsies, died on Thursday hist at Oxford, "near Madison, Ind. His remains were brought here yesterday by his eldest eon, and his nephew, Henry Werton, and deposited in the public vault at AVoodland Cemetery, where they will remain for a month or two, when he will be interred by the side of his wife, who was buried at Woodland. Joshua Small, Henry Small, and about forty others were preseat at his death, among them his children, grandchildren, &c. All persons, in any part of the world, who desire to attend the burial, and who may wish to know the time of interment, and' other information in regard to the deceased, should write to George Lane, Dayton, Ohio, who will give the desired information. The Gypsies are now in winter quarters near Madison, Ind. Dayton Empire. Newspaper Accounts. The True Witness gives several reasons why there always will be complaints on the subjects of newspaper accounts. 1. Money is sent which is never received, and the conductor of the paper having no knowledge that it was sent, does not, of course, give credit. When he sends out his bills he receives often a complaining letter statiug that the money was sent some six or twelve months ago. , The ouly correct and safe system is the one we have adopted cash invariably in advance.
. VARIETIES. ' ' This winter, for the first lime in forty years, the Delaware river was frpeij across at Philadelphia. .- '-.j' Poor old Jim Crow Rice, the father of Ethiopian miuistrelsy, is now living at an advanced age in New York in extreme destitution. Hsenan's airent writes from London that
in that city Saycrs is actually the- favorite at six to four, andjn some cases even at two to one on the prize fight. Wheat. We hear some talk arnoner our farmers to the effect that the wheat is badly injured, and in some instances entirely ruined, by freezing out during tho winter. Sullivan If em. ! Thet are experimenting on grapes with great success in northern ' Louisiana, by grafting the best varieties from France upon the wild grape vines, which grow luxuriant ly in that region. The records of the State Department show that the total number of persons embarking at foreign ports for the United States during the year of 1859, wa3 155,500, of whom 0G,000 were males. Willis devotes a column and a half of the Home Journal to a pleasant sermon, tho moral of which is " Should not our fair country women take it into consideration whether they do not begin to bo agreeable a little too early and leave olF a great deal too soon ? A Hit at Punch. The London Starsays of the London Punch, to which the chief contributor is Mark Lemon: "From the Punch which is now served up to us, the whole of the spirit hn3 evaporated ; nnd nothing remains but excessively diluted Lemon." They have a plan in Princeton, N. J., for preventing troubles with vagrants. The overseer of the poor keep3 on hand a lot of stone to be broken. When a traveler begs for something to cat, he is referred to the overseer, who gives him work and feeds him. The begging fraternity ' find this a bitter pill, and their visits to Princeton are not so frequent as before. Thb En peror Fountain at Chatsvvortli, tho residence of the Duke of Devonshire, with a head of water of 381 feet, carried through 2,021 feet of pipe, plays to a height of 2C7 feet. With tho reservoir quite full, 280 feet is thn highest limit to which the water can raise. The height of the great jet of the Crystal palace Fountain at Sydenham, is 234 feet. ftaF A fashionable young lady went into a store in Norfolk, Va., entered into an extended examination of its contents, and then bonght a dime's worth of thread, which she reqaested to have delivered at her house, a mile distant. The polite proprietor assented, procured an express, which, on arriving at the house, was backed up to the door, the tail-board lowered, and all the motions incident to express business gone through with, including the collection of fifteen cents, the usual express charge. Turnpike Roads How to make Them. We are informed that the townships in Dearlorn county have been building Turnpike roads by using the road tax upon one road until itis finished. They work the dirt roads only enough to keep tlieui in passing order. By this eystern a !;irge portion of them are already, made gotd Turnpikes. They have thus, secured a permuuent iu vestmen of their road fund. We commend the plan to the careful consideration of the farmers of this county. . NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. STEWART'S STOVE. i N 1 , mJa oj" u.ijyn, j jLJiuan WM- lot of these truly and justly celebrated, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of the unrivaled Stewart's Patent, aud at the only agency in this city. 7'hos. Scantling, JTo. 29 Main street-, between first and -Second. The first premium was awarded to this Stove as the best coal or wood cooking stove at the Southwestern Indiana District Fair, held at this place. No stove ever devisd combines as nnmeroiis or important scientific principles as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, hakes and roasts at the same moment, without one dih imparting flavor to another, or producing that sameness of taste in meats and gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidious of taste, makes so insuperable an objection to every other cooking stove now in nse. With one-fourth of the find employed in tho best of stove now in use, this most perfect and complete cooking apparatus performs, simultaneously nnd more ferfcctly than lias ever before been accomplished, everythiu required in the best provided families, so far as cooking is concerned. When, too, it is borne iu mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, and the fire is at it height, without the smallest unpleasantness from the change of temieratur, so little is the heat from it disused externally, an inducement i presented for its universal enipl3'ment never heretofore presented in any other stove. That, indeed, is one of its priucipal attractions, as well a its greatest wonder, how heat is so economized and diffused within the stove itself, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a phico where, with auy of the stoves now in use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather more particularly, to breathe with comfort. For 20 years Mr. Stewart ha been employed in perfecting this stove, and since last February, he has obtained three new patents for improvements, which, in his opinion, and the opinion of all who have examined it, made it perfect. Within four years twenty thousand of them have been sold, under a full guarantee, and not one has been returned. These remarkable results have emboldened a host of stove manufacturers to imitatethe Stewart Stove, but, save iu exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expired) enables them to give, they no more resemble Stewart's than chalk does cheese. These imitations are known by various names, but they are all deficient in various particulars, such as the air-tight boxes, by which full control is kept over the tiro, and of the heat, by a draft damper, ingeniously contrived, which also admits a conslaut current of cold air on the outside of the tire box, which again becomes heated air, and, passing into the orea, is made available fur rooking urpoees. . The ageut and eubacriler is receiving the best Imitation of the Stewart Stove, called Pride of the West," which he will be happy to dispose of at two-thirds of the price of the genuine Stewart's. It is possible, of course, to cook with it, but it bears no resemblance to Stewart's. The "Stewart" is sold by the agent, under a full guarantee to perform as recommended, and if, withiu three months from purchasing, any fault is fuind with theui, he will take them back and refund tho money. Housekeepers will bear in miRd. thou, that the genuine Stewart Store, bought at the ouly ageutd here.will. with halt the labor and onetoiirth the fuel, do more and better c,Hkirtg than any other stove ever constructed. Cincinnati, O., Feb. 16, 1858. Messrs. A. L. Scovill Jt Co.: tlentlaiten : I will, with great pleasure, give my testimony as to what your SARSAPAKIL LA AND STILLINGIA, or BLOOD ANV LIVElt tiYIiUI', has done for me. Some three and a half years since, I was attacked with a Scrofulous White Swelling, which was attended with most excrutiating pains ! I tried various remedies, and had two of tho Iteft Physicians of the city (one of them a Professor in an Old School Medical College), aud they failed to givo me any relief! ' I was so reduced that I was contiued to my bed forever three months. The nerves and muscles of one leg were so contracted and drawn np, that I could not walk. I had more than a dozen ruuniug ulcers ou my legs, from which I took, from time to time, more than One Hundred Pieces of Bone, some of theiu from three to four inches long. I was reduced to almost a skeleton, and my friends had given up ail hopes of my recovery I 1 was in this condition when i commenced the use of your Blood and Liver Syrup. I have used altogether some two down bottles of it, aud at the same time the Iodine Ointment, which you advise to use with it ; and, lastly, the Healing Ointment, given under tho head of " White Swelling," iu your directions. I am now able to attend to business, and my legs have hec me so strong that I wulk without any difficulty and have entirely recovered my health. Yours truly, MARTIN BOBBINS, Jb.
