FOR CLERK W SUPREME COCRT, JOHN P. JONES, of Lagrauga. FOB SDPERIXTEXDEXT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, MILES J. FLETCHER, of Putnam. : Will Not Obkt. A Washington correspondent of the State Sentinel writes as follows : ' , " . .The enemies of Douglas here are claiming that the delegation from Indiana will not be a unit." Among those claimed as having agreed to disobey instructions are Smith Miller, Lafe Develin, W. II. Talbott, J. M. GreB Pliny Hoaglanl, Wm. Garver, and J. R. Cbffroth. I presume, however, that the claird is not predicated upon any tangible fact, but is made more fur the. purpose of influencing other States . than : anything else, and, I presume, it will be news to you in Indiana. In commenting on this statement, the : Sentinel (a warm Douglas paper) u can't do justice to the subject." It remarks rather ominously : We presume that no delegate from the State will refuse to obey the instructions of the party which have the justification ot precedents. If tbey do, they will sink so low thai even' the hands of the resurrectionists will not be able to reach them. The delegates from Indiana to the Charleston Convention go there to represent the sentiment of the Indiana Democracy, and no sane man will deny but that .the choice of the Democracy of Indiana for the Presidential nominee is overwhelmingly lor Douglas. .. The .Washington correspondent of the N. Y. Tribune writes thus: " It is understood among recognized leaders here, if the Charleston Convention nominates a Southern candidate, that the Cincinnati Platform will be reaffirmed pure and simple, his. geographical position and sectional sympathy furnishing a guaranty for the rest. If & Northern man, then a plank to be inserted for the Dred Scott decision, with the Southern .iRterpetaiion that the Constitution carries Slavery into Territories, and entitles it to protection by Congress If Douglas be nominated he Will have to go. the whole hog of Dred Scottism to satisfy the fire eaters. "To this complexion must it come at last." His squatter sovereignty friends in. the North may as well be getting ready to stultify themselves,- if vtheyhave made up their .minds to slick to him in all vents. He will agree to anything to get to be a candidate for the Presidency. He hasn't .been .trimming " tacking off and on " for ten years for nothing. 'The Indianapolis .correspondent of the Richmond Jeffersonian (Judge Perkins,) writes thus about our State population : When our next census is taken, though it will show great increase in our population and wealth, it wilj at the same time demonstrate that Indiana is sinking in the grade of States, that her power is relatively diminishing; and this happens because she has not, and never wilt have, within her limits, any great cities ; and it is in these that the great increase of population takes place. The increase of population in the State of New York is in her cities. Rural population is of Blow growth, after the country has reached a certain degree of occupancy. Goes8 the Judge has never been in the "Commercial Metropolis of .Indiana." . If be comes here we will show him " a good place " for a great city, and a place that will be occupied by one some day. Railroad to Kansas. A dispatch dated Atchison, K.T., Feb. 24, reads: The last Tail was" laid on the Atchison & St. Joseph - Railroad yesterday; the road will be stocked and regularly opened on the 1st of 'March.., This road brings Atchison in direct Railroad connection with all the principal cities in the Union. The running time to St. Louis, will be seventeen hours. It is an outrage on popular rights that so enlightened and energetic a people as those of Kansas, should have been so long kept out of the Union. Those who oppose her admission when she again applies, might as well " hang their harp3 on the willows." It will be "all day " "with them. No excuse will save them. Thb Octoroos. The "Octoroon" is the name of a new play, illustrating life in the South. Miss Kimberly is at present play ing it at the National Theater in Cincinnati. It is said to be the most interesting and cx citing play that ha3 been put on the stage for years. It was written by Dion Bourcicault, and has had a tremendous run in New York. The play possesses much of the peculiar dramatic interest of Uncle Tom's Cabin. As first written and played, it was offensive to the South, but the author is modifying it so that it can be played in New Orleans and other Southern cities. Stopping thb Scpplies op tub Colonization Society The Maryland House of Dele gates on the 15th nist., cut off from the Col onization Society tue annual appropriation of $5,000 by a decided vote, and left, only the clause of the co.ie giving $70 per capita for each free negro that may be taken from the State, with the clauses providing for the appointment of the Colonization Society and defining their duties. The vote was very decided on the bill in this form, and it was referred back to the Committee for revision. The Democratic majority in the Maryland Legislature have done divers disgraceful acts this winter, but after the above action, we are prepared for almost anything. DcB The Dayton Journal comes out against Chase for President, on the ground that he has just been given a good office; and is too much of an office seeker. It says he wants everything. That is one objection we have to both Chase and Seward they are eternally in office and are never satisfied.
nockport iionilpo-Mlnicei'-W'' Rockport, Feb. 25, 1850. '
- Editor Journal; We-Rockporters are just ,now making tall calculations, based on the recent Coal discoveries in this vicinity. 1 For Some two months past. we hive been warming our shins with coal dug from our own hills and knobs pronounced by all that use it to be superior lo any this side of Pittsburg. I paid a visit to the mine not long since, and .was pleaseiLto sea such, flattering evidences of an inexhaustible supply. ' The Rockport coal mines are a fixed fact, ' and will no doubt hereafter cut quite a Eg- ; ure in her history. , They are situated some ! two or three miles back of this place, on a r high knob, which commands a good view of j' the town. The vein now being worked 'm about four feet thick, aad getting better tho farther in the miners get. Thoy have gone about ninety feet into the side of the hill, which, from present appearances, is a solid mass of coal. Inside, , there is a splendid rock quarry on the top, from which the j rock for the foundation ot eur College, now j building, is taken. . j The wind, on last Wednesday, was evi- i dently on a spree, and seemed bent ou doing as much mischief as possible. Could it be possible that the gas then evaporating at the Capital had anything to do with it ? Let that be as it may, it certainly ran wild for a time. A fiatboat opposite here, which some of our merchants were loading, was sunk. She had several thousand bushels of corn in her. . I understand Mr. G. B. Bui. lock was the principal loser. i - A martial spirit has seized hold of a portion of the goodly inhabitants of oir place, and, as , a natural ' consequence, a military Company is in due process of formation. What they intend doing, I have not heard. Perhaps they have been reading of Gov. Wise and his plan of inarching thiough the free States, spreading destruction in his path, and are getting ready to meet him.' Or has old Buck, in asking power to march the troops into Mexico, enlisted their sympathies in his behalf? If so, I suppose we shall soon hear of their offering their services to him. Or possibly that old axiom in time of peace prepare for war " has stirred them np to a doubling of their diligence in their Country's behalf. But whatever the motive may be, I wish them success.' A terrible accident happened to-day to one of the miners who work in the coal mine here. He came into town and walked into the planing mill, and by some means got his hand in amongst the knives, . when in an instant it was all gone but the thumb and fore finger. I understand he has a wife and two children, depending on , him for Buppprts.... ........ . . ..,.,-., .... ... ... The delegates got home frqni the. Convention this evening in high 'spirits.' The name of Henry S. Lane is a tower of strength of itself. The delegates from this part of the State were in favor of instructions for Bates for President, but we intend to support the nominee, let him be whom be may. Three cheers for Lane and the ticket.' " ' Spexcer County. AN IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.--We are i informed that four English miners from Mansfield and New Castle, England, have recently found and opened a coal-field on Obed's River, in Fentress Co., in this State, belonging to Gen.. John B Rodgers, consisting of 1,000 acres, of a solid coal bed, four feet thick, of the best article of bituminous coal, containing an extra quantum of gas and petroleum, the best they have found in the United States. It is on the margin, of the river, and easy of access to Nashville by water. We understand a specimen of this coal, coked and in its natural state, will be in the Nashville market the coming Spring. A specimen of the coke and tar may be seen in the bands of Prof. Stafford, our State Geologist. This coal is overlaid in many places with fire-proof tile rock, suitable for making coke ovens, parapet walls, paving streets, covering houses, and the like, and may be obtaiued of any thickness from one inch to six, squaring right of itself, if desired, and can be transported to Nashville by water at a-trifling expense.-- Memphis paper. Th Liberty of thb Bodqcet. The Gazette de TAurgovie says that not long ago a bouquet was thrown to a dansettse in one of the theaters at Venice, made up of the three colors of Italian independence, red, white, and green. She picked it up and kissed it. For this she was summoned before thepolice authorities, and ordered thenceforth to trample on. all bouquets which might be thrown taier. ' This order cot abroad, and next night there was thrown a bonquet of the Austrian colors, black and yellow. ..In obedience' to the.- order of the police she trampled it under her feet, while the house was shaken by acclamations of applause. - For Musicians. Littorlf, the composer,' said recently: " There is at Gotha a society composed of four musicians of wonderful talents, who play Beethoven's qnatuors wita such disheartening perfection I used to get tired of hearing them play. One day I heard four itinerant musicians play one of these quatuors very incorrectly, but with so much freedom and ease I was delighted. Tw'as like a cold bath after a sultry day there was a shock, but the shock was refreshing." - NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. IMPORTANT TO HOUSEKEEPERS. E. R. DURKEE &. CO.'S Select Spices. Some three and a half years Since, I was attacked with a Scrofulous White dwelling, which was attemled with most .excrntiat lug pains 1 ' 1 tried various remedies, and had two nf tho best Physicians of the city (out) of them a Professor in an Old School Medical Collegt), aud they tailed to give me any relief ! I was so reduced that I was confined to my bed for over three months. The nerves aud muscles of one leg .were so con. trarted aud drawn up, that I could not walk. I had niore:1han a dozen running n leers on my legs, from which I took, from time to time, more than One II uudred Pieces of Hone, soma of them from three to four inches long! . I was reduced to almost a skeleton, and my friends had given up all hopes of my recovery 1 I was in this condition when I commenced the use of your Blood aud Liver iyrup. I have used altogether some two dozen bottles of it, and at the same time the iodine Ointment, which you advise to use with it; and lastly, the Healing Ointmeut, given under the head of " White dwelling," in your directions. I am now able to atteud to business, and my legs have become so strong that I walk without any dimculty and have entirely recovered my health. Yours truly, MAKT1N KOiSBINS, J. Read an extract from the Cincinnati Medical Journal, Vol. 5, page Slu, by its editor, I'rof. It. S. Newton, in regard to this remarkable cure : . . " While Mai tin Bobbins was in the very worst imaginable condition, we were called to attend him for a fraSture of the leg, produced by a fail. : The indications of a re-uniou of the bone, uuder the circumstances, were nu favorable, for he would sit, day after day, picking out small pieces of the bone, which would slough off. I found him using Scovill's Preparation, which he continued to use unti I a cure was effected. We gave him no constitutional treatment, being In attendance only as a surgeon; yet we confess we had much euriosity to see what could be done in a system so extensively diseased as his was." i ' i Will tlio afflicted call.ou the agent and get a pamphlet containing certificates of cures from well known citizens of Cincinnati ? t&tr Recollect that this Medicine is warranted to cure all diseases that are caused by an impure state of the Blood. Scovill's Blood and Liver Syrup is composed entirely of vegetables, aud is perfectly safe for childieu to use, in case of sore mouth or eruptiou on the akin If mothers value the health of their i-hildren, they should eradicate the seeds of the disease before it is too late. Tho. Scantltn's, No. 29 Main street, heheeeri .. ,First. and. Second. ::: The first premium was awarded to this stove as the -best coal or wood -cooking stove, ac tne South Western Indiana DUtrict Fair, held at this plnoo. No stove ever devised combines as numerous or important scientific principle, as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes aud roasts at the same moment, without one dish imparting flavor to another, or producing that sameness of taste in luoatn, and gravies, which, to the delicate and fastidiousf taste make so insuperable an objection to every 'other cooking stove now lit nse. v ltn one-iourtn tne rue! employed tn the best of stores now in nse, thi j most Derfect and complete cooking apparatus perrorms. simnltAbeotlsly and more perfectly than has ever before been accomplished, everytt tg required iu the best provided families, so far as cooking is concerned.Whn, too, it is borne in mind that the most delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is folly employed, and the Are is at its highest, without the smallest an pleasantness from the change of temperature, so little is the heat from it diffused externally, nn inducement is pre sented for its universal employment sever hereto fore presented in any other stovo. That, indeed, Is one of Its principal at tractions, as well as its greatest wonder, bow . heat is so economized and diffused within the stove itself, and so little perceptibly es capes into the kitchen, a place where, with any of the Steves now in use, otlier tlian Stewart s, it is scarcely possible for any on, in warm weather more particularly, to breaths with comfort. . . For 20 year, M r. Stewart has been employed in perfecting this stove, and since last February, he has obtained three new patents for improvements, which, in his opinion, and the epinion of all who have examined it, made it perfect. Withiu four years, twenty thouttntd of them bars been sold, under a full guarantee, aud not one has been returned. These remarkable results have emboldened a host of stove manufacturers to imitate the Stewart Stovo, but, save in exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expired) euablns them to give, they no more-resemble Stewart's than chalk does cheese. Thes imitations are known by various names, bnt tbey are all deficient in important particulars, such as the air-tight boxes, by which fnll control is kept over the Are, and of the heat, by a draft damper, iugeniously contr ved, which also sd in its aCoostant current of cold air -on the outside of the Aro-box, which again becomes heated air, and, passing into the oven, is made available for cooking purposes. The agent and subscriber is receiving the liest imitation of the Stewart Stove, called " Pride of the West," which he will be happy to dispose of at twothirds of the price of the genuine Stewart's. It is possible, ot course, to cook with it, but it beara no comparison to Stewart's. The " Stewart " is sold by the ageut under a full guaractee to perform, as recommended, and if, within three monthsfrom purchasing, any fault is found with them, be will take them back, and refund the money. Housekeepers will bear in mind then, that th genuine Stewart Stove, bought at the only agents here, will, with half the labor and one-tonrth the fuel, do more and better cooking than any ottier stove ever constructed.
