' ' EVANSVILLE, IND.
T HUBS DAT MORNING.. .FEBRUARY 16 The "Wuolesale .Harkct. The reports we bare published, for the past few days, of actual sales of groceries and produce, reported to the Trade Exchange, are of great value to the business of the city. The country retailer and producer can see by our reports from day to day, and week' to week, just how the market for the leading articles stands. Evansville U a large wholesale and manufacturing point, and it is essential that these regular, reliable market reports, found ed on actual sales, should be published. This publishers can not do. with any cer tainty, unless there is 3ome fixed source from which to obtain the fierures. It is next to impossible for us to run around from store to store to get them. The trouble we should not mind, but one person would tell us one price, and another, another, so we should not know upon which to rely. We are very anxious to have these reports kept up, and to publish them regularly, as well to give additional value to our paper, as to add credit to the city as a systematic and extensive business point. Let any mer cantile reader look at the market reports we are publishing, and say whether they are not a credit to all concerned. Still they are not, by a great deal, what they should be, and what they might be made, if all our merchants and manufacturers Bhould join the Trade Exchange and hand in stated and full reports of Sales and Shipments. If this be done, we can make up tables which will Bot only " astonish the natives, " but every body else who may read them. So let us have full reports to publish Specify, carefully, your grades of articles and prices received, so the various shades of the market can be ascertained. Keep up these reports, and we will publish them regularly. If these thing3 be done a3 they ought, we venture that good results will flow from our united action. We republish all these reports in our Weekly Journal, and they go through all this part of the country. They are just what is needed to give our city prominence, as a wholesale point. Now let us have regular reports, embracing the largest variety of articles, and our word for it, we all will be benefited and richly repaid for our trouble. Let people abroad know how our market stands. We can afford to, and do, pay the highest current prices for produce, and no point can present . better inducements in groceries, dry goods, hardware, queensware, furniture, castings, liquors, etc., etc. Let people know this, and the prosperity of Evansville is assured. The Enquirer's idol, Judge Douglas, has been very explicit, and faithful to squatter sovereignty, hasn't he ? Very ! For instance, in the North, squatter sovereignty unfriendly legislation and all that was preached without stint. At New Orleans, he said a Southern man had as much right to take his slave, as the Northerner his horse, into the territories. Now he proposes to swallow the Dred Scott decision, and the President's recent declaration, which will kill squatter sovereignty as dead as a hering. , In this view of the case, and considering that our neighbor will support Douglas whatever his platform may be isn't it rich for the Enquirer to say that the Opposition of this County have dodged responsibility. BSyThe female connected with the recent scandal case in Chicago, an account of which was recently published, was an adopted daughter of Erastus Corning, of Albany; her maiden name was Treanor, and she was born in Troy ; her husband was a Mr. Burch, formerly a prominent citizen of Little Falls, New York, and her seducer Daniel Stewart, a lawyer. It now appears that there are two sides to this story, and that the lady was not altogether to blame. Bf,A fellow in Shelby county, Ind., lately wrote a bogus report of the Shelby County Republican Convention to the Cincinnati Gazelle, saying Seward had been instructed for. The Gazette comes out in a savage article, and gives his name, which is Alonzo Blair. lie is Clerk ot Shelby county. A New Manufacture for tub Southern MABKET.-rMessrs. Marshall & Co., of this city shipped, yesterday, for the South, a large quantity of burial cases, constructed of corrugated galvanized sheet iron, and copper sheet. If the term " elegant1' can be applied to such sad mementoes, they come nearer to it than any burial case3 we have seen. They are exceedingly light, the heaviest not weighing more than sixty-five pounds. So extensive are the orders for the South, that, although a large number of hands are constantly employed, the patentees find it difficult to supply the demand, Lou. Democrat. Ctt?The Superintendent of the workshops of the Pennsylvania Hailroad at Alton, has introduced an improvement in one of the locomotives of that road, winch con aumes the smoke, bo that instead of the vast volume of smoke which the ordinary loco. motive belches forth at every revolution, a little steam only is seen escaping from this invention. In consuming the smoke a great savine 01 lucl isf tlecteu. it made the run from Altona a distance of 11 7 miles upon 25 bushels of con', maintaining a high rate of speed all the time, and evinciag the possession of extraordinary power. f The Santa Fe correspondent of the St. Louis Republican says: The Speaker of the House introduced a bill to repeal the law passed the last session of the Assembly, protecting: slavery in the Territory. Next day resolutions were almost unanimously adopted requesting him to resign the Speak ership, which he did, and subsequently re signed Lis seat in the House and went home. The same day Mr. Coellar Y. Medina was elected Speaker, and the bill in question was reierred to a select committee, who reported in favor of its rejection which was done without a dissenting voice. A bill is pending in the Pennsylvania Legislature embodying the proposition of sx of 1 per eent. on bank deposits.
Washington Items, Judge M. F. Conway, representative elect,
under the Wyandotte Constitution, has arrived in Washington from Kansas, and will testily before the Investigating Committee soon. Mr. Conway says that there is 1:0 favor expressed in Kansas to the proposed change of the boundary of the State. He says that the Territorial Legislature, now in session at Lawrence, will unite with the Wyandotte in memorializing Congress for immediate admission with the Constitution as it now stands. There is a company of gentlemen now in Washington who are ready to make a proposition to Congress to tarry the entire inland mails of the United Stales, provided the franking privilege is abolished, for the revenue arising therefrom. The company is abundantly able to perform the work, should the franking privilege be abolished. There are a number of members who have resolutions already prepared abolishing the whole Postoflice system, and allowing the mails to bo carried by private enterprise, in the same manner that express matter is now carried. Mr. Vallandigham has given notice of his intention to introduce the Ilomestead bill, and to increase the appropriation for arms, &c, for the Militia, from $200,000 to $000,000. The Washington correspondent of tho Tribune says that the official orders have not yet been issued, but it is decided to withdraw all our troops from Utah, with the exception of one regiment, and scatter them principally over New Mexico and Arizona, in range of the posts from El Paso to Fort Yuma. If this policy be carried out, the transportation to Utah will be reduced from 500,000 lbs. annually to 100,000. From Mexico. The Mexican news is interesting. The Church forces have been defeated near Tlascala with a loss of 100 killed and prisoners, and considerable artillery and ammunition. Cubas, with 2000 men, has been defeated in Aljaca. The Liberals had reoccupied Colina, San Luis and Zacatecas. Woll is successfully opposed in Jalisco. The Church party Government is reduced to a small extent of territory. The whole force of the liberals is 30,000 men. Miramon, by extraordinary efforts, hits negotiated the sale of $10,000,000 of bonds for 45,000, through illicit dealing with the French Minister. . Nine million of the bonds will enter the French funds as foreigu debt. Mr. Matthews, the English charge, had presented an ultimatum, asking full payment of his claims within eight days, in default of which ho would demand his passports. Little confidence is placed in his sincerity. Senor Ocampe had resigned the Ministry of Foreign Allaire to accept a special mission to the United States and England, connected with intervention by the former, and the recoguition of the Constitutional Government by the hitler. Degollado takes the place vacated. Ocampe leaves in the English packet of the 5th ef March. The stock of sugar at Havana and M. tanzas was 35,000 boxes; Muscovado, 81 reals. Molasses arrived slowly and sold readily at 4 J reals for clayed ; 5 for Muscovado: 13J14 prem. on New York. VARIETIES. The whole of France a nation of thirtysix millions of inhabitants only appropriates as much money to common schools as does the city of New York alone something like six millions of francs. Rowing is recommended by the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin as a good exercise for ladies who wish to develop the bust. Why not have called it robust exercise at once ? These were one hundred incendiary fires in New Orleaos during the first thirty-five days of 1860. Accounts trom the est ladies state that Carlo Rndio, an accomplice of Orsini in the attempt to assassinate Louis Napoleon, has escaped from Cayenne, in company with a number of Frenchmen, in an open boat. Rudio landed at Barbice. It is suggested by Lieut. Morrison, R. N., that the discovery of so many planeU which have not heretofore been detected, is in sup port of the theory held by some astrono mers, that these bodies are thrown off by the sun. The Ohio Life and Trust Company Build ing at Cincinnati, has been sold to the London Fire and Life Insurance Company for $125,000. There are 310 churches in Philadelphia, of which 19 are for colored people. The Episcopalians have tho largest number, 51 ; the Methodists next, 41 ; there is no orthodox Congregational church, and but 1 Unitarian. The various kinds of Presbyterians have 67. The subject of overtasking children in schools has been considerably discussed in Salem, Mass. As a consequence, the committee of the classical and high schools have reduced the number of daily recitations from four to three. Thus far, the change has worked beneficially to the schools. The population of Georgia, according to the census of 1859, is 1,024,000, of whom 576,71C are whites, and 443,745 slaves. The representative population is 884,597. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. He now enjoys Robust Health, and has for the past year done us much work as any young man of his age ! This cure has excited his fiiends, neighbors, and physicians, and even some of the Medical Faculty. One of the Professors (Dr. R. S. Newton), who was called to see him as a surgeon, not to prescribe, was so forcibly impressed with the Remai kable Curative Properties ot this Medicine, that he has adopted it into his private practice, as well as at the College and Hospitals. Ciscinxati, O., Feh. 1C, 18"8. MEfWGH. A. L. SC0V1LL it Co. Cevtlemen: I will, with great pleasure, give my testimony as to what your SARSAPAKI LLA AND STILL1NGIA, or ISLOOD AND LIVEH S 'H UP has done for me. Some three and a half y.-ars since, 1 was attacked with a Scrofulous White Swelling, which was attended with most excrutiating pains 1 I tried various remedies, and had two of the best Physicians of tho city (one of them a Professor in uu Old School Medical College), and they tailed to give me any relief 1 I was so reduced that I was confined to my bed for over three months. The nerves and muscles of one log were so contracted and drawn up, that I could not walk. I had uiorejthan a dozen running ulcers on my legs, from which I took, from time to time, more than Ono Hundred Pieces of Bone, some of them from three to four inches long. I was reduced to almost a skeleton, and my frieiids had given up all hojies of my recovery 1 I was in this condition when I commenced the use of your Blood and Liver Syrup. I have used altogether some two dozen bottles of it, and at the same time the Iodine Ointmeut, which you advise to use with it; and lastly, the Healing Ointment, given under the head of " White Swelling," in your directions. I am now able to attend to business, and my legs have become so strong that I walk without auy difficulty and have entirely recovered my health. Yours truly, MARTIN ROiiBINS, Jr. Residence on Eighth street, between Mound and John, No. 3'2t ; or at place of business, with Brown Villette, No. 4 East Fourth street. Head an extract front the Cincinnati Medical Journal, Vol. 5, page 310, by its editor, Prof. R. S. Newton, iu rcgitrd to this remarkable cure : "Whilo Muitin Bobbins was in the very worst imaginable condition, wo were called to attend him for a fracture of the leg, produced by a tall. Tho indications of a re-uniou of the bone, uuder the circumstances, were unfavorable, for he would sit, day after day, picking out small pieces of the bone, which would slough oil. I found him using Scovill's Preparation, which he continued to use nnti 1 aenre was effected. We gave him no constitutional treatment, being In attendance only asa surgeon; yet we confess we had much curiosity to see what could be doue in a system so extensively diseased as his was." Will the afflicted call on the agent and get a pamphlet containing certificates of uureB from well known citizeus of Cincinnati ? Recollect that this Medicine is warranted to cure all diseases that are caused by an impure state of the Blood. Scovill's Blood and Liver Syrup is composed entirely of vegetables, uud is perfectly safe for children to use, iu case of soro mouth or eruption on the skin. If mothers value the health of their children, they should eradicate the seeds of the disease lelbre it is too late. Read the statement of one of the oldcot chemists in Cincinnati. . I O.V il.fjl, M.JtlltSK -3tlot of these truly and justly celebrnted, newly and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking Stoves, of the unrivalled Stewart's Patent, aud at the only agency iu this city. 2'hos. Scantlin's, No. 29 Main street, lelween First and Second. The first premium was awarded to this stovo as the best coal or wood-cooking stove, at the South Western Indiana District Fair, held at this place. No stove ever devised combines as numerous or important scientific principles, as this of Stewart's. It broils, boils, bakes aud roasts at the same moment, without one dish imparting flavor to another, or producing that sameness of taste in meats, and gravies, whi ;h, to the delicate and fastidious of taste makes so insuperable an objection to every other cooking stove now iu use. With one-fourth the fuel employed in the I est of stoves now iu use, this most perfect and complete cooking apparatus performs, simultaneously and more perfectly than has ever before been accomplished, everything required iu the best provided families, so far as cooking is concernedWhen, too, it is borne in mind that the muet delicate females can visit the kitchen when the Stewart Stove is fully employed, and the fire is at its highest, without the smallest unpleasantness from the change of temperature, so little is the heat from it diffused externally, an inducement is presented for its universal employment never heretofore presented in any other stove. That, indeed, is one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest wonder, how heat is so economized and diffused within the stove itself, and so little perceptibly escapes into the kitchen, a place where, with any of the stoves now in use, other than Stewart's, it is scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather more particularly, to breathe with comfort. For 20 years, Mr. Stewart has been employed In perfecting this stove, aud since last February, he has obtained three new patents for improvements, which, in his opinion, aud the opinion of all who have examined it, made it perfect. Within four years, (treaty llwnmitd of them have been sold, under a full gnarantee, and not one has been returned. These remarkable results have emboldened a host of stove manufacturers to imitate the Stewart Stove, but, save in exterior appearance, which the old patents (having expired) enables them to give, they no more resemble Stewart's than chalk does cheese. These imitations are known by various names, but they are all deficient in important parti culars, such as the air-tight boxes, by which full control is kept over the fire, and of the heat, by a draft damper, Ingeniously contr ved, which ulsoadmits aconslaut current of cold air on the outside of the fire-box, which again becomes heated air, and, pacing iuto the oven, is made available for cooking p' r;oscs. The agent and subscriber is receiving the best imitation of the Stewart Stove, called " Pride of tho West," which bo will be happy todisposeof at twothirds of the price of the genuine Stewart's. It is possible, ot course, to cook wilh it, but it bears no comparison to Stewart's. The " Stewart ' is sold by the agent under a full guarantee to perform, as recommended, and if, with in three montnslrom purchasing, any mult is toiind with them, he will take them back, and refund the money. Housekeeiers will bear iu mind then, that the trenuine Stewart Stove, bought at the only agents here, will, with half the laborand one-fourth the fuel, do more and better cooking than any other stove ever constructed.
