Morris, of Ills., obtaiueU the Hour, but yielded to Mr. Riit, who said, several years ago, he made a pledge to his constiuents he would never again engage in a sectional debate. Recent events of an extraordinary character have alsolved him from that pledge, lie alluded to the atrocities of John brown's raid and the continued aggressions of the North on the rights of the South. He spoke of the infamous character of Helper's book, but non-slaveholders, South, have no sympathy with such doctrines ami his appeal to them will be unheeded. Yet that infamous book has been endorsed by the candidate of the Republicans for Spoaker, and the whole antecedents of that gentleman are in perfect keeping with this act, lie has been uniformly and intensely sectional. No man Inu lieen more intolerant to the South, ami he owed his present nomination less to his ability or his accomplishments as'u stalomau, than his hostility to the South, lie invited us to scrutinize his record. I have done s.o. He alluded to Slienuau s cour.-e on the Kansas bill, and every appropriation bill of the ;! lth Congress, lie spoke of the objects of the Republican party, characterizing thcni as treasonable. Mr. Dunn called for order, as the gentleman violated propriety by using the word " treasonable.'' He said if the epithet applied to any, it was to the other side of the House. Rust resumed, and renewed the proposition, that the conservative members select a candidate for Speaker among the Democrat, or let the Democrats select a candidate from them, and IkuIi unite on such candidate. Cox said he would not le negotiable in any such business. ilindman remarked Nor would he be thus transferred by his fellow Democrats. If any person outside of the Democratic i.artv was selected, he would exercise bis own judgment w briber he would siiort .him or not. Noel declared his readiness to vole for .'any person selected from the other side for ttbe sake of an organization. t'ox said he would vote for any atiti-Lc coruptonite that might lie selected, but his diitViio iis constituents and Ins own senti nieiils would not permit him to vote for any f the Southern Americans, who are not oulv opposed to all the measures of the Dem rralir nartv. but also to civil ami religious liberty. I Mr. Rust lengthened out his remarks to an almost unlimited extent; and PS w e " do do not presnuie that our readers will lie much interested in them, we leave tliem out Eo. Joi rsal.1 Ilindman said be wished to organize the House on a conservative basis, and was will iug to vote for any conservative man in op nosilion to the Republican party. The par ty to which he belonged was for the good ot the country. Rust said there must be concessions There were members iu the Southern ppo sition he would gladly vote for. He said neither he nor his associates would feel so shocked as to Co out ol the Union if an anil - Letvuiptou - English - Bill Democrat should be chosen Speaker of the Houae.
The gentleman from Ohio, Mr. Vox, had stated his insuperable objections to voting for a South American. He excused himself
for not giving aid and comfort to that party. " Now," said Hill, " we can get along with' out hint.'' You might not make a Speaker on the basis of I he proposition offered, Idealise this is not the time. He understood Mr. Cox to say he looked on the Southern Oiosiiiop ami Republican party a3 identified in opposition to the Democratic party. Cox meant, as to the matter of slavery in the Territories, and States. He understood he Opposition to advocate intervention by Congress to protect slavery; and the Republican party tuj claiming the exercise of Congressional power to prohibitelavery in the Territories. "With these parties they favor the re-opening of this agitating question in Congress, while the Democratic party says to lxth, " non-intervention." Ural .son said he had heard there was a j party here willing to support men in the Souih, lio utre not Know-No1hing3. In order to test it, he nominated Maynard, of Tennessee. He had done this on his individual responsibility. May card was outside of nil organization?, and was a National, conservative man. MeKea asked whether the political friends of Brabpon would all vote for Maynnrd. Hrabson said he could only Fpsak for himself. The roll was called, and during the voting, numbers of explanations were made. Aslimer stated he was the first Democrat who abandoned Ilocock, and he did so in hopes to eirect an organization. He would now vote for Maynard Florence said bitterly opposed n? I am, first, last, and all the time, to sectional organizations, such as are represented ou the the other side of the House, I am willing to cast my vote for a conservative man, to promote an organization, and pass appropriate bills, which my friends on the other side are so sensitive alnitit. Haskin said he was conservative in principle and should therefore vote now, as heretofore, for Sherman, whose I'nion sentiments nu t bis entire approbation. Eogliih asked if he had not voted for Gilmer. JJjllaskin replied he had voted for Gilmer, because in the 35lh Congress he stood alongside of himself and Sherman, in opposition to the Lecomptoii policy of the Administration, w hich English sought to cover up by u bill that in his judgment was the meanest bill fie lb re the last session of Congress. Laughter. English called attention to the fact that Gilmer himself voted for the English bill. Laughter. Haskin replied that when Gilmer voted for il, he stated that it was a shilly-shally, namby-pamby, nasty kind of a bill. Great Laughter. Logan, when called, stated inasmuch as ho was not willing to participate iu making this a general slaughter house ol" the Northwestern Democracy, he voted for Ilocock. Mr Ilea wtid several memliers of t he American party having voted ngainst Maynard, he should do the same, and voted for Scott. Morris, of III., said he had voted fiir Bocock, Millson, and others, but be thought his colleague, Met 'lernand, had not. bad bis full strength tested, and now voted for him. ' Scott voted for Maynard, on the assurance that he was an old line Whig, and did not belong tii the American parly. Hiirnett wished to know whether Maynard liclongrd to the American organization. Hrabson replied that May mud was one of the Fillmore electors, but never belonged to the American order. Several Democrats briefly crave reason;'. why they voted for Maynard. The discussion continued, and the Republicans kept calling for order. Morris, ot Illinois, rrfcrrod to a remark luivde by him last session, that the Administration would break down, and find they ware carrying too much weight. The Administration was full of rottenness, and had no more alliliation with Democracy than darkness with light, or virtue with vice. And more of the same sort. Eo. At three o'clock, Morris gave way for a ballot. Wholo number 208 ; necessary to a choice 105; Sherman 101; Maynard ! ; remainder scattering. The House then adjourned. Washington, Dec. 28, p. m. Gov. Wise in his last Richmond speech broadly intimatts that when the Virginia military recently marched past the White House the President did not even notice them. As this remark occasions some comment here it may not be amiss to say that the President at that time was not at home, and did not know until he read the speech that troops had tmsscd the White Hoiisu. The President is uniformly marked in his attentions to all visitors. The speech of Morris, of Ills., to-day in part commendatory- of the President and the Administration, was made agaiit the wishes ot Douglas and other Democratic uicuilicrs of the Illinois delegation who avow their desiie to promote the harmony ol the party. The last Boston notion is tins descritwd : The new device of photographic cards, w hich originated with Mr. Whipple, photographer, ol iioslon, is quite in vogue at the present lime, and that artist is very busy, as orders are coming in as rapidly as they can bo executed. As New Year's Day occurs on Sunday, and the usual call must be dispensed with on that anniversary, gentlemen can leave their photographic cards on Saturday, so that the ladies cannot only name the number of callers, but 1 able to show their portraits, with their best smile iqion their countenances. Cm. Cum. As New Year's Day is close upon us, we advise our young friends, who intend making " New Year's calls," to send in their orders early to Mr. W. H. As soon as these vessels were telegraphed in London, as having arrived at the mouth of the Thames, a return cargo was engaged, ami they loth sailed again lor I long Kong at exactly the same hour. A large amount of money is staked on the; race to China, and the enptains are authorized to put their ships to the test. EteS?" Many of Schiller's admirers even have overlooked the fact that he was one of the originators of that famous paper, the Augsburg Allyi'mcine Zeilnny. He was indeed ottered the chief editorship of that journal, but declined it as incompatible with his other pursuits. In remembrance of this fact, the present proprietor, Baron Colts, of hlultgart, printed for distribution, and most handsomely gave away to the poorer school children of Bavaria, Wurtemburg, Baden, and Frankfort, more than two hundred thousand copies of a selection of Schiller's works, in connection with the recent culej bration. BTl The (ork business is rather dull nt this place this season. The distilleries have none, or very few, in the pens for slaughter, though one gentleman in town, Mr. Rebayre, has a large lot to kill, which will about equal the annual average of the Eagle Mills. Several houses are buying small lots of slaughtered hogs as they are brought in by the farmers. It is possible that Netteltou St Co. will pack their usual quantity this season, hut we doubt if any other house will. The price this week has ranged from $5 50 to So 00 per hundred. Commence the New Year Right, ItY SfBSCRIBIXO FOR THE EVANSVILLE JOURNAL f A change has recently been made in the proprietorship of the above paper, which, we hope, will commend it to the increased support and confidence of the Opposition to the present Administration in this part of the country. For several years it has not occupied a very definite position in relation to political matters ; but, hereafter, it shall be no fault of the new proprietors if its aid is not counted on with certainty in opposition to that great and alarming evil Lecorupton Democracy and all other malign influences which seek to undermine the foundations of the government, and enslave a free peoplc The course of the present Administration has been totally subversive of constitutional liberty, and it is the sacred duty of every patriot to aid in banishing it from the place it desecrates. In this holy crusade, we expect to engage, and invite the co-operation and encouragement of every member of the opposition to that Administration in this region of country. It is obligatory on the citizens of this section it is for their let iuterests to aid in driving from power that selfish and rapacious Lecoiai ton party, (mis named the " National Democracy,") which paralyzes our manufacturing and mechani cal interests, throws a withering blight upon our agricultural capabilities, by making them dependent upon an uncertain foreign market neglects our River and Harlior improvements, .thus rendering navigation insecure and unprofitable encourages for eign imports by its " free trade" jiolicy, and brings upon us tei.-ible and enduring financial revulsion, nt a lime when our country is at profound peace with the world indulges iu the most criminal profligacy, fanaticism, anil extravagance, thus liclicing its professions of economy, and throwing a tremendous burden of debt upon a jicople who are already oppressed to the last point of endurance exercises a system of pro scription, terrorism, espionage, and brifiery, that would disgrace an absolute despotism opposes those two great measures, (a Pacific Kailroad and a Homestead Law.) designed for the l-st interests of the Wes, and the , whole country foments discord ami hatred between the Xorth and South, and keeps in a continual turmoil the people of each sec tion, who ought to live together in harmo ny ; in short, that ptrty which takes particular pains to do that which it ought not to do, and leaves undone that which itouoht to do. Will not the ople of this region arise, and assist in destroying this " Pando ra's 1kx " of all evils ? The next year is to be a season of start ling interest and significance in public affairs. A new Administration is to be put in power; several important questions 'of public policy are to be discussed ami decid ed; our State officers are to lie changed ; a now representative for this district in Congress is to be elected ; a new Legislature is to be chosen, which will have to re-district the State for Congressional purposes, elect a United States Senator, and do other highlyimportant business ; and it may lie that the longer endurance of the Union, even, is to bo tested. Ou all these matters we expect to spet-k freely our sentiments, taking the best interests of this people as a guide in our efforts. Buxiness Matter shall receive jiarticulur attention iu this paper. We desire, and will endeavor, to make the Juuriuil a reliable source of commercial information. MdttujMtHrcs and Agriculture those mean of wealth ou which we are all dependent shall also receive due attention at our hands ; and the development of our unequalled advantages shall be urged with zeal. As a Family 1'aper, containing choice selections of literary matter, for perusal in the quiet of home, we promise that this journal shall be equal to any. We do not mean to fill' it with the trash of the cheap Kastern weeklies, but our readers shall have all the intructive and entertaining literary matter that they may require for their mental health and enjoyment. But the specialty of our paper will lie tlie Xetes. In order to secure the latest and most reliable intelligence, no pains or necessary expense wiH be spared. We are determined that when this paper is looked to for the latest foreign and domestic news, there shall be no disappointment. As a means to this end, correspondence will be encouraged. The Eranxrillr Journal is one of the old "institutions" of "The Pocket." It has grown with the growth and strengthened with the strength of this portion of our commonwealth, and can lay just claims to the consideration and support, of those adjacent portions of Illinois and Kentucky with which the interests of Kvansville are identified. We, therefore, do not hesitate to solicit patronage from tho,e quarters. Our ambition is to produue a paper entirelyworthy the growth and importance of the country tributary to this flourishing city. We confidently expect to receive the good wishes of the people for whom we labor in the shape of subscriptions, advertisements and job work for this oflice. This material aid we do not ask as a gratuity, but expect to give full value for all we recuive. We have decided on the cash pre-payiuent system, as the only correct one, and have educed the prices of our subscription as low
as they can be- made with safety. Our' terms are invariably eah in advance. In return, we promise the full worth ot tho , subscription price. 4 TKItMS OF SUBSCRIPTION.
