LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION: " TlisTpitESIDENT'S tlKSSAUH Whs delivered on Tuesday. Aa imperfect abstract was telegraphed on that evening, which we should have received but for the breaking of the line. Y expect to be able to give the full message to-morrow morning , therefore we shall not publish the abstract. If otr readers will exercise patience, they can see the whole thing soon. The President goes the whole hog in endorsing the right to take slaves into the territories under the Constitution, and in de daring that neither Congress nor the Tectorial LegislAture, nor any hqmjv power, has any power to annul or injj-ais this vested, right. The Slaie Ssntififl (Douglas paper can hardly believe its eyes when it reads this, and.phunly'intiuiates its design to "pitch in" to that portion of the message wlieu it see3 a true copy. A Timely Lesson. The action of iuo National Republican Committee, iu calling a National Convention i such terai3 as to include iu the invitation the Opposition generally, deserves to 1 considered and imitated by the Republican State Central Committee, in the calling of a Slate Convention. The councils of the Chairman of that Committee, and of many of his indiscreet advisers in the heavy Republican counties, are all directed to the personal end of a fVw of the ultra Republican leaders aa i? no other class of the Opposition hadaay right to be represented in the leading organization to be made iu our Stale the coming i;ir. They think that the straight-out Reliillicans coin peso the Opposition, and foroel that there is, in the Southern counties of Indiana, an immense mass of voters who are just as sincerely opposed to Lecomptoui.im and other villaiuies as the ultra Republicans are. It is high time, now on the eve of calling a State Convention of the opponent.) of the present Administration, to disabuse the mi mis of those mistaken gentlemen of the idea which seems to have run away with their good sense. The "Opposition," in this part of the State, is constituted similarly to the lVuple's Party of Pennsylvania, and the Opposition of New Jersey, who are invited, along with the Republicans, by the National Republican Committee, to attend and participate iu the Chicago Convention. TU parties, in the States named, are composed of all the opponents of the L-ecaiuplonisiu and corruption of the present Administration. They are made up of Republicans, Americans, Whigs, and Anti-Lecompton Democrats, and a more compact, effective party does not exist than those two. They have gained great victories, and ar8.."fl,'stined in future, we believe, to gain 'Others. The grandeur of the triumphs in Pennsylvania of the People's Party, the good use they have made of their victories, and the aoble stand taken by sueh men as HicWan, Hi3kin, Schwartz, and Forney against the Lccompton powers, is all couchisive evidence against Mr. Carbera oft-repeated argument that such a motley party can accomplish uo good, enduring purpose. The Opposition here is composed of individuals entertaining different shades of belief. They see that the only chance to de feat a compact buoy of Treasury-eaters, is to make a general ch:u go ' along the whole line " at them. They know that, if a siiiuul here aud there, without concert, be detached and sent out, they will be picked oil' by the well-disciplined veterans of the Administration at their leisure, aud that thus the pres ent corrupt dynasty will be perpetuated. Therefore, the Opiawition here are, willing to waive minor points of ditfertuce for the time, aud to co-operate with each other on the broad platform of opposition to the present Administration its tyranny, its corruption, its extravagance, aud its odious federalism. Let the persons who control the present organization of the Republican party call their Convention in such a way that the Opposition here may participate and throw their influence against the adoption ot triju dicious and extreme measures and men, aud Southwestern Indiana will tell a better sto rv iu 1SG0 thau ever told yet for the cause of political reform. 8fe2rTho telegraphic news Tuesday night. which we find iu the Indianapolis and St Louis papers of Wednesday morning (hav ing failed to iret it ourselves), was ot con siderable interest. The President's annual Message was presented. Iu the Senate, it whs read after bein objected to ty several Senators. The message was laid over till alter the holidays, when it is to le printed Tn the House it was laid on the table till the House effects an organization. In the House, after Mr. Smith, of Virginia, had finished a speech commenced the day before, sn effort was made by the Ieui ocraU, to elect a temporary Speaker for ten days, for the alleged purpose of voting the post office appropriations. The Republicans objected, unless John fcherman should b elected such temporary Speaker. The 2"2d ballot for Speaker was then taken, with the following result: Whole nuinlier of votes, 20S; necessary to a choice, J05. Sherman received 101; JScott, of California, 17; Houston 15; Gilmer 14; Hocoek 14; MeClay 12 ; scattering 35. ttMV-The Minnesota Legislature i.i pro gressing rapidly with lmsiuess, but the most important measures will be deferred until after the first Monday of January, when the new Administration will t inaugurated, aud the Legislating will have the benefit of Governor Ramsay's suggestions in regard to State policy.
with ran a i imixjiii j . New Year's Galls. Our suggestion yesI terday, looking to the observance of Saturday nest as thb day wtt which New Year's
calls should be inade, (New Year's day cbuilhg on Sabbath), has, it seems, "played hbb" with the arrangements of some of onr lady readers. They had made their arrangements for Monday, when lo! ihcJournal comes out, favoring Saturday, and spoils their calculations. Several of the aggrieved ladies have appointed a certain gentleman a committee of one, with full power to procure a change in the time of calling as suggested by the Journal, to Monday. We regret the tlileittiua in which we have placed that yostiou of the ladies favoring Monday, and can. only remedy the matter by secommending gentlemen to make their eall3 on Monday. We presume that is the ptoper day, as Saturday will be devoted to fitting the "young ones" out for New Year's, to baking, cleaning, and " fixing up'' generally. Resides, Saturday is the busiest day among the male population. Since writing the alwve, we learn that a number of ladies have their hearts set on the observance of Saturday, as the day for calling. We know of only one plan to solva this difficulty: let the "great principle sf popular sovereignty" rule; let each lady observe the day she prefers, and, in order to signify the fact of her house being open for visitors, she can hang on the dooj-kuob token of some kind say a blue ribbon-. In this way, caller3 may know whicl houses are and which are not open on the respec tive days, without being obliged to wait at the doors. There doesn't appear to be anv possibility of agreeing on any one day, so everybody, gentlemen aud ladies, will have to proceed according to their individual convenience. 15y following out the above pit. j, time will bo saved and embarrassment prevented. U. S. Sk.natoh Wilkinson-. The Chicago Democrat llitw describes the new United States Senator from Minnesota Morton S. Wilkinson elected recently to fill the va cancy caused by the expiration of General Shields' s term : The telegraph has already brought the news of the elwction of Morton S. Wilkin son, of I'due Karth county, by the Legislature of Minnesota, for the Senatorial tern commencing on the 4th of March last, and expiring oh thi! 4th of March, 1805. Mr. ilkinson is a Republican of the extreme Seward school. He has fine abilities, is a foicihle, speaker, and will make a valuable accession to tin Republican strength in the Senate. Mr. W. is an old resident of Minnesota, having emigrated from New York in 1 si4S anil is a trim friend tn the interests of Minnesota and the p. rest Northwest. He is about foi'ty-thrcej ears old - a popuior oratorof very dignilied and tuiiiiii; Hiding appearance, and will Ik regarded as one of the finest looking men in the Senate. In bight he stands somewhere letveen six feet and six feet six. lie is a bold, fearless Republican, and will prove himself eijual to any emergency that may arise. lIoitiiini.K Discovkiiy A Mas Uthied A 1.1 VK. Tim Albion MicL.) lleview says that a man by the name of George Sawyer died, &3 was supposed, in a spasm, some time last spring. He was buried alive. Not long since, some of his friends, wishing to remove his Iwxly, disinterred him. They found him lying on his face, his hand in his hair, with great hand fills torn out, and his grave clothes all torn to pieces. A law ought to be passed, requiring, under severe penalties, that bodies of persons supposed to be dead be kept until unmistakable signs of decomposition show themselves ; or if this is impracticable from the prevalence of any contagious disease, then, that some unerring test such as au incision into the ilesh, the amputation ot a little linger, or some other operation that would not prove fa'al in civse the subject lived be made by a physician, to ascertain with certainly that life is indeed extinct. We 1lieve tha,t taultitiulus of persons have lieen buried iilive through the unseemly haste with which bodies are harried to the grave. fifej" The bold and insolent threats of Disunion from Southern representatives in Congress, are likely to do more harm to themselves at home than to the Opposition at the North. The Southern Opposition and Independent newspapers are beginning to speak out boldly. The Richmond (Virginia) Xt , for example, says that if either Wise or lluuter can see the way to a nomination for the Presidency, we will hear no more threats of Disunion, and that no man of any sense believes that such an event as the dissolution of the Union is likely to happen. Says the yews : "He who professes to have deliberately weighed the consequences to Virginia alone of a dissolution of this Constitution viewed even in its consequences to Virginia, and her slave prxqwrty, and her other material interests, and professes to desire disunion, is a conceited simpleton, or an empty blockhead, or something worse than either. "Of all the States of this Union it is demonstrable, even as to her slave interests that there is no State i:i this Union that would gain so little and endure so much by disunion, as this glorious old State. Calm, deliberate, pains-taking and informed reflection, will satisfy any impartial mind that upon the theories we mean the commercial, financial; and manufacturing theories of that school who advocate disunion Virginia would find no place, have no interest, and possess no voice in a purely Southern confederacy." 8ter The Terre Haute Journal says that the Democracy of Cass county, the homo of United States Senator Fitch, held a convention on the 1 7 Ih Dec, at which there was a very large attendance. They endorsed the Cincinnati Platform, aud favored the nomination of Senator Douglas by the Charleston Convention. The Journal thinks this action by the fellow-citizens of Senator Fitch 11 quite significant." Jsjjf The reason we had no telegraphic news on Tuesday morning was that the telegraphers were taking Christmas the day liefore. The line whs down ' east of Viucennes," Tuesday, which prevented the reception of the dispatches for Wednesday morning's paper.
j 8- We passed through the Pork House; ! of Mr. Samtel Okk yesterday, and found i I his men busily engaged iu cutting up some fine hogs. Mr. Orr informs us that he will
