LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. HKAUISO MATTER OS GVEKV PAGE. Our employees having roted to have the 25th of December Christmas come on the 24th, this year, there will be no paper issued on Monday. Rilitorlal Correspondence. Isdiasapoms, Dec. 21, '50. Having lx:en away from Evansville for over a week, I have gathered a few item:) that may be of interest to our readers. The weather is settled into a steady " spell," and a3 there is a good snow on the ground, sleighing is all the rage. The young folks," especially, are putting in their time well, and many a sleigh full of them " runs all night." Single-horse sleighs hire for one dollar an hour, large ones in projortion, and notwithstanding the hard times, the livery stables can not supply the demand. " Well," a3 Mrs. Bedott would say, "young folks will v young folks." Lectures and shows are all the go, now. "The Old Folks" I see advertised to per form at the Metropolitan Hall (formerly Theatre), and at Masonic Hall Dr. Boy n ton is lecturing very acceptably to large audiences on the subject of Geology. He is provided with fine apparatus for illustra tion. He is to that subject, what Professor Mitcbel is to Astronomy that is shaking of him as a lecturer and as the former was invited to your city and gave a very entertaining and instructive course last year, would it not be a good idea to induce Dr. IJovrton to visit Evansville and give a course of his scientific lectures? The war between the two wings of the democracy yet rages with undiminished ferocity. Nothing can prevent a "regular muss" in their convention nest month Everything will be cut, driod, sorted, and labelled by the Administration Central Cotimittee, and the attempt will be mud to force down the throats of the Congias raea whatever dose is prepared, fiu- tUtUi. They will come up in full streagth-r-they will out number the Lecomptonites they will fight fiercely tUey will die hard. But die (politically, as " National Democrats," so-called) they will. When their leaders let the Lecompton minority again out-general them, wLl the rank and file in the Pocket and elsewhere submit to the outrage? or. will they refuso to be repicsonttjd. at Charleston, by a Lecomptcn. delegation ? We slwll see. I have it on good authority that Henry fci. Lane will accept a nomination for Governor from the Opposition, if it is the general wish that he should run. It is entirely ynneoeasary for me to say that he is an A Xo. man in every respect, and will get the nomination if it is understood that he will accept. Candidates lor the several ortiics to be nominated by the Opposition Convention are beginning to be mentioned. Among others, I have heard Henry S. Lane amlJudge Morton mentioned tor Governor; Will. Cumbnck, Judge Otto, and Wra. K. Edwards for Lieut. Governor; Judge 1q Urulcrfor Attorney-General ; Jonathan, Harvey, of Jeflersonville, for Treasurer of State; James Burgess, of Danville, for, GV-vk. of the Supreme Court; ltenj. Harrison, of this city, for Reporter of the Supreme Court. In due time, tijere wll he plenty to choose from. i notice that the editor of the Madison Courier has been paying his respects to the Journal in rather a left-handed way, in regard to our comments on his plan of calling a straight-out " Republican " Convention, instead of an " Opposition " Convention. We shall have deply to make to our dicta ttyrial friend in a few days. If he wjahs. to, defeat the Opposition movement by declaring his radical Kepulicans,. holier than, other men, and refusing to ccvopcratq wSfa other eoutdly honest oppouents to, Levfaiptonism, we cannot consent to. l& him pursue such a destructive C'jijtwo without putting iu a protest. Business, except pork packing, is dull here. Mgjicy, for general business purposes, is auui scarce. The majority of people, however, think they spy the beginning of " the good time coming," somewhere a)Hut the owning of spring. J. H. M. Ptu tntl Sc Issors. A little girl, the daughter of James Connelly, a nsitlent of Cincinnati, was burnt t,o death on Tuesday last. It attempted to add some fuel to the fire in the absence of its mother and ignited its clothes. When the mother came into the room her child was a blackened and charred mass. V til .. Seventeen millions are annually struck out of existence by fire. The murine losses are more thatt twenty millions exceeding by a considerable per ceu.t. thrf 'English losses, arid by stili iioe those of France. The balance is made up of losses by railroad accidents, and other casualties
attributable to carelessness and reckless "go-a-neaditi veness."' We surmised, the other day w hen the announcement was made that the Southern students had withdrawn in a body from the medical schools of Philadelphia that some of them bad lieen arrested in attempting to break up Mr. Curtis' lecture in thai city a night or two before. Our surmises were correct, as the following police items from a paper in that city evidence : I
C. T. Henry, a medical student from Geor- j gia, arrested for inciting to-rtot in tbe-, street. . The prisoner was armed with Colt's revolver, fully loaded. ' Alderman :
Kennedy held the accused in $300 bail to answer the charges of riot and carrying concealed deadly weapons. David Watson, aged 21, a Southern student, arrested in front of the building, for inciting to riot. A u billy " was found upon his person. Watson was held by Alderman Swift in ?500" to answer the charge'of riot and carrying concealed weapon3- : lltiam Jones, a medical student from Georgia, arrested for inciting to riot outside of the hall. Held in $400 to answer; by Alderman Kennedy. John C. Clark, of Kentucky, a medical student, arrested for inciting to riot,, : On searching this prisoner in the car house, a murderous looking dirk knife was found upon him. Alderman Swift held him in $800 to answer. We learn from Washington that the Pos" master General ha decided that slips posted on newspapers containing, besides the address of subscribers, the date when his subscription expires, and, in seme cases, the amount due, are subject to letter postage. It apjuears that members of the House of Representatives cannot get their pay till a Speaker is elected. A dispatch from Wellington, however, says that Mr. Grossbrenner, Sergeant-at-Arms of the last House, has advanced to various members sums amounting in the aggregate to $40,000. Thurlow Weed writes to tie Albany Eoenin.j Journal that Mr. Sherman will undoubtedly be elected Speaker, and that Mr. Porney will be made Clerk, though there will be a strenuous opposition to him. He saya the Republicans intend supporting Mr. HotTman, of Maryland, for Scrgeant-at-Arms. The dropping man," whose adventures in jearch of funds were recorded , in the Seymour Timet the other day, as we noticed at the time, or oue of the family, has been " flopping down," as Jerry says- in Dickens' last story, in Lafayette. He had a little boy with him, dropped into a dead faint on Mississippi street, sprained bis ankle, was taken to a neighboring house, told a dismal tale of the loss of his family in Kansas, was given $2ti by a ympathicing set of " suckers," and went on his way rejoicing. We shall probably have him or one of the tribe here next, and we warn the public to be careful how they give money to men who faint on the street, and tell sad stories of destitution afterwards. They are playing the "dropgame," the meanest game on earth, for it cheats men through their best feelings. Indianapolis Journal, lir. Iloyntan Eagtgcd It is with, extreme pleasure that we are able to announce that Dr. Boystos has consented to give our Library Association two uf his interesting lectures on Geology. The lectures will take place on Tuesday and Thursday, January 3d and 5th. Owing t numerous pressing engagements" in otkr cities, he is unable to give a full course. hut we are assured that the two lectures swlimted are his most popular and interesting. It was thought hefore Prof. Mitch kll came to our ci'y that it would be difticulC to make attractive scientific lecture, but the success and acceptability of his. course have satisfied our lecture-going public that, in the hands of the proper i uvsi they are not only the most usefnjj. but the most interesting. 1. ovmoj-. popularity in otlier cities will insure him a large audience here. It win b? seeu by our Editorial Correspondence that he is giving a course iu Indiannpoiia.
