EVANSVILLE, IND.
FRIDAY MOBNINO.. IECK31BKli 23 LARGEST CITY CIRCU LATION. "llKADlSo JIATTER OJX KVEKV PAUK. Fen and Scissors. Our friend, "Whittlesey, is now at Indianapolis, looking after his chanec3 for the nomination for Secretary of State. We wish him every success. A series of resolutions ha3 been introduced in the Kentucky Legislature insisting on the Congressional protection of slavery in the Territories. The Louisville Democrat takes strong ground against the passnee of the resolutions, insisting that if they are adopted the Democratic party will become purely a sectional party. The Terre Ilauto Journal has taken i3 position in regard to double delegations to the StaL' Convection. It Fays : " All delegates who are regularly sippointed in pursuance of a call of the Executive Committee, if there be one in the county, should be admitted. Lehind this, this Convention should not go, in any case. The same paper willies to know where we got our information in regard to a union meetiug that we announced wa3 held in that city. We will state that the papers of that city announced that there, was to lie such a meeting, and taking it for granted that "what was to be would be," we made our notice accordingly. The Jiiwla proves to us the unreliability of the Terre Haute papers, and hereafter we shall take, all their statements with a due allowance for shrink age. A bill has been introduced into the Mis souri Legislature providing for (lie sale of all the leading railroads in the State, and the organization of new companies for tho con tinuation of the same to their respective terminations. Tho St. Louis Republican says: "These are the main points of a bill to sell out the State of Missouri to foreign pra. A more miuuitous and damning meas ure never was introduced into our Legislature." A bill for excluding free negroes from Mississippi Missed the House on the th by a vote of seventy-five to five. It provides that they shall leave the State on or before the 1st of July, 18G0; or, if they prefer to remain, that they shall be sola into slavery with a rirht of choice of masters, at a price assessed by three disinterested slaveholders, the proceeds to go into the treasury of the countv in which the provisions of tho bill may require to be executed. Tub Heading Room. The Young Men Reading Room was opened for the iirsi time to the public, on Tuesday evening, and quite a number of visitors were in attendance, all of whom were well pleased with their reception, ana me uisie uispiayeu oy the oflicers in arranging and lilting up th room. Papers from nil parts of the country are on file, together with many of the popular magazines of the day. I'incames Gazette. The citizens of Indianapolis are enjoy ing the finest sleighing that has been in that portion of the State for several years. Wc have fine snow in our city, but few of our .nnln are takinc advantage of it. We 1 L have not heard the first tinklo ol a sleigh bell. Scu'ipe. Yesterday morning, a son of Mr. Newton Wright, of Wayne township in this county, a bid about sixteen years of ace, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head. In the morning he went to school, but his teacher observing he was unwell, sent word to his father, who went for him aud took him home. At the time above mentioned he was in a room with his little sister, to whom he stated that when he got well he would hang himself, and instantly started for the head of his bed, where lie had a loaded pistol unuer ins pmow. n rrt it. and placinir the lmu'.le to Ins fore head, pulled the trigger, and dropped upon the Hour, where his parents found him on openitnr the adjoining door, allracteil by die screams of the sister. The cause is supposed to be insanity. Slate Srntiucl. At the Democratic convention in Hendricks county, nit ardent struggle was main tained between the antagonistic elements of the harmonious party. .V motion was made, instructing the delegates to go for Douglas, but it was voted down. Rut one of the U egates appointed is said to be a Doujrl. man. The Terre Haute ...to-ri.i says Hint It. K. Hudson, of the Express, charged the. county one hundred ami seventy-live dollars r.iore for printing the delinquent list than it could have been published for. It Beems to make but little d'UVerenee which parly gets their linger into the treasury it is depleted the same. Accident. Mr. N. D. Ruckle, formerly of Indianapolis, but now proprietor of the I)e Raw House, New Albany, met with an accident last week, which is thus noticed by the Tribune, of Friday : Wc regret tolearn that our friend Ruckle, of the De 1'aw House, was severely hurt night before last, in attempting to lead to his room one of the " fast " young men ol'JeffersonviUe (formerly of this city), who was on a "bender." In attempting to :isccnd the stairway leiuling to his room, the drunken fellow fell, dragging Mr. Ruckle with him. Mr. R. lay insensible for sometime, but, by the application of the proper remedies, was finally restored to consciousness. As a matter of course, the one who was intoxicated was not hurt. TRKASrr.r SiK;i. Secretary Cobb has notified his political friends that the Treasury can stand the siege six months, without the aid of Congress, to stimulate their resistance to the plurality rule. Some suspicion this as braggadocio. Whenever the House is organized, the Treasury must meet nine millions of dollars, one lor pay and mileage, over four for the postoffice deficiency, and nearly four for the lirst quarter ending the 30lh of September. The Secretary has, subject to draft, about, live and a half millions of dollars, which is the margin required for smooth working, and cannot be safely reduced; and some six millions of Treasury notes, capable of re-issue. A new loan, or notes, nre expected before long, as inevitable, from the present exhibit. If the treaty with Mexico should li patched up, as was understood with Mr. Lerdo when here, it could not be ratified with the money clause, aud if confirmed, the House would nrt. vitn o. iloll.ir if the four millions iroposed. N. y. Tribune. I
ESyThe Republican National Committee, which assembled in New York city several days ago, appointed Chicago a3 the place for the meeting of the next Republican National Convention. A more unfortunate selection could not have been made. Chicago has become celebrated as one of the strongest alxjlition cities in the Union, and also aa one of the principal stations on the underground railroad. In fact, it may be npprcpriately"dysignated as the terminus of that mystic thoroughfare. Its selection indicates, to our minds, tliut the Seward faction ha3 the upperhand in the Republican organization, and that the Convention has lx;en located in a city where all the outside pressure will be decidedly Sewardish. 'The National Democratic Convention is to assemble in the Capitol of the disunion-
sts. and tho Republicans are to meet in the great emporium of the Abolitionists. Be tween the two organizations, conservatism likely to be crushed to atom?. The only preventative seems to be a thorough arous:ig of the elements that have long lain dor mant, politically, and the organization of a irty of the people. Let the conservative men of Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, arid of Kentucky, North Carolina, and Ten nessee, inaugurate tho movement. It will tulto but tx few month-j for it to sween over the whole Union, like the fire on the prairie. It is time that both Abolition agitators and Southern Disunionists should lie rebuked, mil the Sooner the better.", Nkai:i,v A liuK Night before last a watchman at the depot discovered that one of the machine shops was on fire. He was enabled, by considerable exertion, to extin guish it belorc any mat( rial damage was done. The managers of the road have used great precaution in the erection of water tanks that will throw water through hose to any part of their mac-bine buildings, and can quench a fire before it gets under head way. As their machine shops are moslly wood, great precaution is necessary to pre vent accidents. Tlic Ladles' fair. Last nitrht was a decided success. The display of needle work and fancy articles was very attractive ; the tables being arranged with that exquisite taste which alone belongs to the ladies. And in every re spect, tho Fair was all that its friends, and those who were fortunate enough to be present, could desire. The attendance was large, even uncomfortable for the dimensions of the Hall; the array of beauty was the most attractive ; the refreshments were served up in the I est st lr, as only good housewives can pi p ire them ; tho music by the Crescent Oily Baud, was with its usual excellence; the liberality of tho people seemed abundant, aud up to the time of our leaving tlie Hall, everything passed otl in the most satisfactory manner. The Fair ill be continued this evening, and we ad vise nil who wish to sec an attractive dis (day, rvrtd onjoy r jK?i,iifc evening t, go tu Crescent City Hall. It is just the place to procure tasly holiday presents for friend and tho little folks. Citr- Everybody concedes that they get the nicest lilting shoes nt ilrciiKS they ever wore. He is selling his whole superior stock of dry goods, hats, caps, IkmIs, shoes. and notions at prices that cannot fail to please the lovers of bargains. To those who wish to purchase holidav t-'ifts, ho would say cull at his store, and buy useful articles at uiipreecdentodly low prices, there is no mistake about it. NEW ADVERTISE?: NTS. v .e R W.
