EVANSVILLE, IND. j MONDAY MORNING DECLMBKlt 19 LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. The Xew8 The New Castle Courier says a whisky insurrection occurred at Frankton, Wayne county, on the Cth inst. A fellow had pur chased a barrel of whisky and opened a retail grocery. Ho was charged with selling to a minor, and taken before a Justice for trial. While he was defending himself belbr the licuce-oiliccrs, the ladies of the village invaded his premises and poured out his liquor. Last Wednesday, in New York, ten laborers got upon a scaffolding to a house in the process of erection. The scaffolding was intended to sustain only four or live persons. It gave way under the heavy load, and precipitated the men to the Mib-bascment,some twenty feet. One was killed instantly, and several severaly injured. The trial of W. 11. (.Jib-son, late Treasurer of Ohio, for embezzlement, is now in progress at Columbus. The testimony agaiust him is said to be very strong. All accident occurred on th? Madison Railroad on Wednesday night ?ast, which resulted in the injury of an engineer, who lost an arm. The collison occurred between two hog trains, ami several hog cars were l.adly broken. The loss to the company is about $ 100. It is intimated that lion. Winter Davis, of Maryland, will not vote for Mr. .Sherman whenever it is ascertained that his vote will elect htm. The great provision house of Van Bunnet Jlarlin's, in New York city, has failed for $250,000. U- John W. Forney says the Democrat who proposes to support the Charleston nominee, regardless of the platform he may occupy, commits treason to the truth in advance. If the Convention accepts the doctrine of the Democratic party, as understood from the beginning, he is for its nominee; if not, he is against hiui. What Mr. Forney conceives to be the true Democratic doctrine may be inferred from his statement, that he considers slavery a creature of local law, and that the Constitution of the United Slates is in no manner responsible for its extension or limitation. He insists that the man who takes the position that slavery goes into the territories under the provisions of the Constitution, but that it is unnecessary to pass any law by Congress for the protection of slavery in the territories if he be a representative or Senator in Congress is guilty of perjury. Forney, Hickman, anil their compeer, are the embodiment of Mr. Douglas' strength in l'eniisylvania, and Mr. Forney infers from Mr. Douglas' letter to Mr. Dorr, of Iowa, that he ( Douglas) stands with him aud will nut support the Charleston candidate who may run utiou a silent or eouivocnl doctrine. Do the anti-ljccompton friends of Mr. Doiiglns in Indiana stand shoulder to shoulder with his Pennsylvania adherents on lli'n point? As we remarked the other day, the issue between Mr. Douglas and Uinhanaii is "straight out,'' admitting of no compromise or nuilible. We will watch with interest the course of our anti-Leeoinpton friends in the next State Convention. Let them stand firm for the truth. Cot i;in.i. There seems to be a general impression among the Douglas pipers throughout the Stale that at! is not going to be fair at the January Convention. The Lognusport I'harus, the Crawfoi dsville AV risu; the Terre Haute Journal., and the Sullivan Ui mocral, all abound in warnings to their friends " to keep their eyes skinned for fraud and cheating- on the part of -Rob inson it Co. The Sullivan cmocrft, espe cially, denounces the idea of the Convention sitting with closed doors, and that none but the select few ami such as Major liobiiison may supply with tickets shall bo admitted The IK mar rat says such proceedings might do for Know Nothings or political tricksters, but, the Democratic, masses of the State will not submit to it. We predict that the delegates to the Con -vent;ou will submit to it, however such a measure may be regarded by the masses, and the Democrat will be compelled to take back its expression, or be denominated what it seems to dread most awfully a holt, r. fiv?- The Washington coi respondent of the Press says a majority of the crowd that fills the galleries of the House of Representatives, are from the Southern Slates, and that a large proportion are ladies. These manifest much interest in the discussions and warmly applaud the Southern Repre sentatives in their vindication of Southern rights. As most of the speeches of the Southerneis are against the Union, we are a little surprised at their meeting with the favor of the ladies. We thought they were for union, both now and forever. rrwfThe lilack Republicans should not complain of Lecompton as they do. A large section of them owe the scats they occupyto that measure. lu.lheir denunciations of it they are very- ungrateful. They are ben eficiaries of Lecompton. They have reaped all the benelii of it; it ha;; done nobody else any good. Enquirer. That is the most frank avowal of the dis astrous elVerts of the President's Lecompton policy upon the Democratic party, we have yet seen coming from a Democratic source. We entirely coincide with the t.miuirer in the above sentiment. W3 have received a copy of the Lafayette Weekly Dsmocra', a paper that pre.senis ; IMro- ij'uj:miiinai -ioirdi.iM(..:, and is intended to give utterance to the opinions of the Democracy of Tippecanoe county. As it is the only Democratic paper in the county, we should think it must prove a ecuuiary success.
Anecdote ok Choate. The following anecdote3 are from Parker's Reminiscences of Choate: " Mr. Choate got a great laugh at the expense of Mr. Kantoul, the United States District Attorney, while commenting on the hesitancy of Wilson to say how he came to be a State's witness how he got into communication with the government at all. 4 My brother Kantoul,' said he, ' told this raseal what to 3ay.' Ranloul sprang lo his feet, inquiring if he meant to charge him with instigating the witness to speak false? No,' burst out Choate, 'you told liiin to speak the truth; and 1 saw you do it. A captain of a whaleship was sued by his seamen for giving them short commons and bad treatment. Choate was lor the captain. The crew was a bad one, and he had no difficulty in dealing with the charge of illtreatment; but with the poor fare he had much more trouble. The sailors appeared and testified in the case. Choate asked one of them, ' What did you have on Sunday ? ' He replied, ' Duff.'
hat is duff ? 4 Plum pudding and mo lasses.' Next he asked 4 What did you have on Tuesday ? ' He replied, 4 Dundy funk.' What s dundy funk ? said Choate. 'Mince. meat and jiotatoes,' was the reply. ' What lid you have on Thursdays? was next asked. .' Lob-ceousce,' was the reply. W hat's lob-scousee V ' 4 It is a stew.' It appeared in the ooursu of the tria that the captain put into the CapedeVerdes to procure vegetables. He succeeded in procuring a large quantity of squashes, but oulu obtain only some dozen onions, ol which he gave one to each of the crew uud retained one himself. When Choate came to this branch of the case, he said, "It is evidence, Gentlemen of the July, that we had dun' on Sunday, dundy funk on Tues day, and on Thursday, that delicious com pound, loU-scousce. And not only did the captain furnish an abundant supply of that esculent and succulent vegetable ol the tropic, the squash, but with his own hand ;iye, with his own paternal hand he divided the onions amongst that ungrateful and rebellious crowd I" No Rioiit to Endouse. 1. A man has no right to endorse when the failure of the first party to meet his obligation will render the creditors of the endorser liable to lose in consequence of such endorsement. 2. He baa no right to endorse for another man unless he make provision for meeting such obligation. 3. He has no right to endorse, unless he fully intends to pay what he promises to, promptly, in ense the hrst party fails to do bo. lew endorsers prepare lor this. 4. His relations to his family demand that he shall not obligate himself to oblige another, simply at the risk of defrauding or depriving theniot what rightfully belongs to them. 5. He should never endorse or become responsible for any amount, withoutsw urity is furnished by the first party. It should be made a business transaction, rarely a matter of friendship. It is equivalent to a loan of capital to the amount of the obligation, and the same precautions should be taken to secure it. 0. A man has no more right to expect another to endor.-e his note without recompense than to expect nn insurance company to insure his home or his life gratuitously. 1. It is not business policy lor one to ask another to endorse his uote promising to accommodate him in the same manner. The exchange of signatures may have, and usually does have a very unequal value. It is better to secure him the amount, and exact a like security for the amount of respons;bililty incurred. 8. It is better to do a business that will involve no necessity for asking or granting such favors, or miking such exchanges. It is always safe and just to do so. Prairie farmer. - MlncrllauroiiH. Lizzie Wyatt, of Pittsburgh, Ph., .who has recently become a subject of some notoriety, a day or two since attempted to cowhide Mr. New l, of The. Chronicle, for saying that her performance of 44 Kve," in a dramatic spectacle, was strikingly true to nature. Mr. Newt, after warning her that he should treat any woman who unsexsd herself to attack him, precisely as if she was a man, slapped her face pretty severely, when she concluded to retire. A passenger who arrived in the Ocean Queen has staled in Washington that there was considerable feeling of indignation expressed by Southern Americans in Paris towards Louis Napoleon for entertaining Senator Seward, to the exclusion of .Southern gentlemen ! They propose to dissolve the Union with France. A Nkw Half Dollar. A new half dollar has been got up at the United States Mint to be submitted to the government for its approval. The new coin, although of the same diameter as ihe one in circulation, is much thicker at the rim, in constxiiciicc of the deeper sinking of the die, and hence, much more durable. On one side is a medallion portrait of Washington, with the head wreathed in laurel; the word lilterty upon a scroll over ihe bust; at the bottom the date, 1859; and around the whole the words United States of America, in plain, well adapted, raised letters. On the reverse side a wreath of grain envelopes the words, Half Dollars, in the same btaiitit'ul letters. The coin is very handsome. The Democrats from Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, says the Cleveland Leader, betrayed the West by voting for Mr. Bocock for the Speakership. He has always opposed the Homestead Hill, and also voted against Mr. Crow's bill at the last session, to give preemptioners ten years pay for their lands. If elected Speaker, he would so pack the land committees as to stifle both of these measures so vital to the landless and to the wilderness West. Let emigrants of nil classes who seek new western homes make a note of these things. The proprietors of the New Orleans Crescent, in July, 1857, refused to pay a tax of $75 on property invested in their newspaper establishment, on the ground that it was exempt from, taxation under article 100 of the State Constitution, the first clause of which reads, 41 the press shall be free." In a lower court the ground taken by the proprietors of the Crescent was sustained, but on an appeal, the Supreme Court reversed this ruling, and decreed that the defendants should pay one per cent, a month interest as damages to the aggrieved civ, from ihe time of the refusal to pay tax. B'rjjp" A large number of the citizens of Terre Haute held a meeting in that city on Saturday night, to take into consideration the disorderly state of political affairs, and to consult as to some effective plau of union and action for themselves. ACTING MlOSlUPMEN APPOIXTKD FROM Indiana. The following candidates from this State were examined, found qualified, and admitted into the Naval Academy, at the commencement of the late academic year : Thomas D. liaird, James Spears Case, James Arthur Dick, Henry B. MCRDER OF THE GOVERNOR OP BOGOTA BY his Brother. The Bogota, Nw Granada, correspondent of the New York Times, writes : On the 1st of November, the population of Bogota were horrified at the report that Jose Maria Malo Blanco, Governor of the State, had liecn murdered by his brother Jesus. The parents of these two brothers both died at about the same time a few years ago, leaving Don Jose the executor -f the will. Tim proiKM'ty was divided in accordance with their wishes, but the younger brother, Jesus, was not satisfied with hi inheritance, and charged the elder with unfairness in his distribution. Gn the day of the murder, Jesus met his brother in the street, and asked him when he was going to pay him $20,000 due him. The Governor replied that he had already paid him all that "was justly due him. Jesus, upon this, drew two revolvers, and offering his brother one of them, told him he must defend himself. Jose declined such an unnatural duel, and commenced remonstrating with his brother, when the lat
ter fired, the shot taking effect. The wounded man, not knowing he was shot, ran, aud was followed bv Jesus, who discharged two more shots at him, neither of which took effect. Don Jose was carried to his home, and died iu twenty-seven hours after, invoking pardon for his brother, lie left a wife md seven little children. It was thought Jesus would be acquitted of the crime on the plea of insanity but, a few days alter the I raed v. new.-i re.n-he.l Hofrotel Illrtt in one of the rural districts of the Stirie, a man of humble fortune had killed his brother with a scythe ami as the poor man must, lie shot, tin; rich one will naturally share liis fate. Senor Pedro Davila Nova takes the post vacated by Senor Blanco. o Urcourlllalloii ln ltvrt'ii IoiiIub and Itiicliaiiaii. The Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia J'ress writes under date of December 12: I need scarcely say that the report circulated by the New York Herald and other papers, that in the first place a meeting had taken place between Senator Douglas and the President; and in the second that advances by the' latter for a conciliatory interview were indignantly and contemptuously repulsed by Mr. Buchanan, is utterly without foundation. It is distinctly and emphatically untrue in every particular. No such interview took place. No such interview could take place, nor is there the remotest chance tin the part of Mr. Buchanan, or the faintest desire of the. Douglasites that such an interview will or can hike place. The report is the weak invention of a weak enemy; but it overshot the mark. The statement that the advance, if made, was repulsed, is so stupid as to give the lie direct -even to the mind of the most uiiiliated to the rest of the ridiculous report. Senator Douglas is farther awa y, if possible, than ever, from any toleration of the doctrines and policy advocated by Mr. Buchanan ; to which we are indebted for the vindictive spirit infused into public affairs, aud the ill effects of which the country is reaping iu Harper's Ferry outrages and Congressional scenes of violence. Again let me say the report, in every particular, is stupidly and contemptibly false. And, moreover, you may take it for granted that if such an advance was made to the Senator from Illinois, he would indignantly repel it, as he should. He is a magnanimous victor, but even the most philosophic captive could not expect that Senator Douglas could or should extend to the present Administration more than the merest courtesies of civilized life in politics, no couitesy whatever.
