WEDNESDAY MORNING.... .DECEMBER 14 LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION. KKAUISU HATTER ON KVKKV . , . . PAGE. - The-News. - The Terro HaufeJ Exprett says arrangements were made on Monday, at a meeting of the stockholders of the Terre Haute, Alton k St. Louis Railroad, to surrender it to the second mortgage bond-holders, which was done yesterday. This arrangement will, it is thonght, relieve the road from all embarrassment. The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Enquirer, says John L. Robinson and Daniel W. Voorhees, while in that city, asserted most positively that the Charleston delegates from this State, would not go for Mr. Douglas. Robinson even proposed to bet something on it, but being taken up, lie concluded he bad other uses for his money. Voorhees says he will die before Indiana should instruct for Douglas. If such are his feelings, we presume he has ordered bis coffin. The Xew York Herald gives the following picture of the result of the recent elect'on in New York city: The voters of tbia metroplis succeeded, on Tuesday, in electing the vilest and most rascally corporation we have ever had, prominent among its members being three indicted criminals one under indictment for murder, another for plundering the treasury, and the third actually under sentence of imprisonment in the pententiary, for felonious assauit. We may be prepared, then, to see every kind of corrupt job nourishing in the new Common Council opening of streeU here, widening streets there, making railroads in another direction, and a universal scene of plunder and robbery all round. The correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette says that a full reconciliation between Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Dougla3 is now thought likely to take place, and is the talk of the House. The same correspondent adds, this will insure(She gravitation of Forney and most of the auti-Leconipton Democrats, to the Republicans. Only J. G. Davis, Adrian, and Higgs are suspected of weak backs. It was rumored that Mr. Douglas sought an interview with the President for the purpose of effecting a reconciliation. The Hon. Joshua F. Bell was unanimously nominated by the Opposition party of Kentucky on Saturday night, lor United States Senator. At Mr. Crittenden's request, his name was not before the Convention. Jere Clemen, the United States Senator, Know-Nothing editor, inyton, and is about ei-derant Democratic and now a Tennessee has arrived at Washto use his influence with the Southern Americans to induce them to coalesce with the Democrats, and uuder any circumstances to defeat the Republicans. A German named Fritz Rubel, in St. Louis, on Sunday last, made a wager that he would jump from the roof of a thrcc-story building into a bank of snow scraped . together for the purpose. If he succeeded, his opponent was to pay for as much beer as he could drink during the day ; if be failed, he was to furnish the beer. He made the jump, siukiiig into the snow up to his armpits, and getting considerably stunned. He was able to call for the beer, however, and drank till he was as limber as a rag. A meeting of the Irish citizens was held at Indianapolis on Monday night to take into consideration the bad treatment they hud received at the hands of the Democratic party. Resolutions were passed demanding their rights, and also expressive of the opinion that a portion of the Democratic party of that city was as " indelibly branded with the ear marks of Know NoUiingisui,'" as were any of the Republican party. The Democratic State Convention of Missouri is called to incut at Jefferson City on, Mon.lay the 9th day of April, I SCO. Thitt will barely atlord the delegates time to get to the Charleston Convention. Tlie Washington correspondent of the X. Y. Tribune says .Air. Slidell will attempt to make the annexation of Cuba an issue before the Charleston Convention. A double delegation will be sent from Jacksou county to the Democratic Stale Convention. fCriy The object of the fillibusteriug now going on in the House of Uepresentalives at Washington, is apparent. All of the speech-making on Clark's resolution all of the threats of impending dissolution are Qaly made to coerce the Sjuth Americans and the weak-backed anti-Lecomplou men into sup(iortiiig the Administration candidate for Speaker. Granting that the Administration succeed in its endeavors, what benefit will it derive? The Democratic party will be held resHnsiMe for the legislation that may be transacted, on the ground that if they had a sufficient majority to elect a Speaker, they had a majority to carry out all the other legislation necessary for the good of the country ami their future success as a parly. They will occupy precisely the position of the People's jwty in the session of "55-50, when Mr. Hanks was elected Speaker, which position did much towards the defeat of the Uejiul.licans iu I 1856 ' 1 We should think the tiue policy of the Administration would be to consent the adoption of a plurality rule, U-t a Kepublican le elected Speaker -it that parly is numerically the strongest and then hold them responsible for t he winter's legislation. Placing them in such a position, they would lie the only party that could commit any blunders; for the ohlcry we were against a minority, we could lo nothing," would answer every charge tii,i,:l the votes of the friends of the Administration. (In the other hand should Mr. Bocock, or any other Administration candidate, be chosen Speak-
! r by an unnatural union of partisans, the 1 Republicans are strong enough to paralyze ferery effort the JJemoorats taight ..make to J carry on tue Government, while tbey would
still be held responsible fortne failure,. There is one radical objection that the Administration bas -against a Republican Speaker. That is, all the Committees are in his hands, and he has an almost unlimit ed -influence iu directing tU-couf ef tog-j-islation-.TIt l9Jery proabltf , a RepubliCaa is elected, (here will JasraeUa vestigating committees appointed, who may worry, if they do not injure, the Democracy. In these days of political confusion the report of such committees, however, generally end in smoke. The friends of the investigation are fully convinced of all they expect to prove by the disquisition before it is begun, while the opponents of the examination will not believe anything that is asserted to have been proven regarding the whole thing as a political trick to make party capital. Hence the thing influences nobody and amounts to nothing. We' think the true course of the Democracy having an eye to success in 18C0 is to permit the adoption of the plurality rule, the election of a Speaker, and such legislation as the wants of the country demand. Henderson and. Naatavllle Railroad.. We learn from the Henderson Reporter that all the stock necessary to insure the completion of this road has been taken, except about $5,000. This ought not to prove a day's hindrance. In a county containing the wealth and intelligence of Henderson, we should think $5,000 would be subscribed in a few hours. The road is an absolute neces sity to our sister city, unless she desires to remain behindthe age altogether. She has no connection wit!: the interior of the State whatever, aud her more enterprising neighbors are gradually stealing away the trade of Kentucky immediately back of Henderson through the instrumentality of railroads, when its natural tendency is to the latter city. Towns and cities could once thrive and grow without the influence of railroads and telegraphs, but that day has long since disappeared, and a city now that is unable to secure an outlet by at least one railroad, will attract none of those elements of wealth which make up the prosperity of a thriving place. If the wealthy citizens of Henderson look well to their own interest, or desire any addition to their fortunes, they will see to it that the $5,000 worth of stock ytt unt'aken will be subscribed for immediately, that the road may be completed in a short time. Significant. "Occasional," in writing to the Philadelphia Press, says Mr. Ruchanan is exceedingly complacent to those very men whom he has heretofore hounded with suc h pertinacity, and thiuks the object of the wily President is to secure their assistance in the organization of the House. He adds the following significant paragraph : " How far such sveophanev mav succeed I know not, but this l know, that the curse of an outraged people must be the reward of all those who, having secured their election through opposition to Executive dictation, now tail to strike when the stroke would kill. ' Retweeu the faith as held by nuti-Lecomptou Democrats, and the wretched follies of the followers of Mr. Buchanan's Administration,, there can las no peace, and to propose harmony between two such antagonisms, is to insult those whom Uie proposition is made to affect. The present Congress, like the hist, may cause the m:isk to be drawn from the face of the hypocrite; and even this is desirable. The people should thoroughly know their representative. . . i ' 4 Patents Gbantku.
