Editorial Corresponded' IsctASAPOLis, Dar 6"79 Si y "letter of the 28 r.cy hare been able to so -mootbe over tbeir , difficulties regarding th orgauIzalion of their Jannsry Staf d ConTentioi)) a3 to mae matte rprr " u ftU .. ght on thc surCicc . but those no ijave opportunities for knowiftSr .a see that there is no peace" in tkl. torn and tattered party. This is made 'plain by an admission in the proceedings of the Democratic State Central Committee, at a meeting held on the 29th ultimo, when it was declared and published, that an "exciting canse"doe3 "exist in the political mind of our own party at this time, wholly uncimnpletl by the pat." ' : The Committee at that meeting took definite action in regard to the day on which their State Convention should be held. I told ya i my other letter that John L. Robinson was determined to hold an Administration Convention on the 5th of January, and that he was not the man to "back down " from a position. Strange to say, at the Committee meeting, a motion was carried to fix the time for holding the Convention on the lHh of January.. I my strange, because Mr. Robinson controls the Committee, a majority of whom are Ad'ministrationiste, and because he made the motion to fix the time on a - day that he had before that time opposed. Of course, he and his co-operators rn the movement had their reaon to justify them in this action, and those rtasons are ihadowed forth in the published proceedings of the occasion. : The committee profess to deplore the fact that all the counties have not appointed delegates according to the directions given by the committee at a former session, and that bobm f the counties have constituted all Democrat as delegates who may phrase to attend, or bav anointed a larger ntinlier of delegates than have a right to claim admission. In this irregularity of some counties, and the arrangement decided on by tire Central Committee to isstn. tirkets to delegate", and to admit none v. itdout, is to be fonnd the consideration on the part of the Lecompton Democrnts for tiieir rowe.'unn as to the time for holding the convention. . They have been very busy at the tuuuty conveatioue already held, in carrying out their own views in the appointment of del
egates, and in thwarting the plans of the enti-Lecomprcnitcs. Where they could get majority of their own men (juicily, they have done to; if not, they would attempt to have all Democrats attending the convention constituted delegates, trusting to good lnck and kill!ul management for n l'ul attendance of the faithful; and, in at.leait one county, (Laporte), they have kicked up a row and left the hall of meeting, when they discovered that the Douglas DeiuocruU " held the best hand.'" From Laporte and some other counties, double delegation: wlh report thewrae'ves, and from sundry other quarters miscellaneous crowds of thu uuterrifted will come. A Lecompton committee iff vis tie ticket, and decides who are and who arc not entitled to them. ?o it is easily seen how great is the prwpect for harmony. In the Convention of January, 185?, there was a rcgnlar Kilkenny-cat fight. So there will be in the Convention of January, 13G0, only md ten-fold more fierce and venomous by two years' acctimnlation of wrath and bit-V-rnws. In the Convention of 1858, the Administration prostrated, but " did not destroy, the A nti-Lecompton rebels." In the approaching Convention, there is little doubt that the scenes of 1858 will be re-enacted. The elasticity and recuperative powers of the Democracy are wonderful, but it would require the nerve, muscle, and energy of a bt of Douglases (strong as he is, both physically and mentally) to withstand all this wear and tear. Douglas and hi3 cohorts must go down, bnt it will be on'y after a strife in which the ranks of both parties will be decimated. The January Convention will send a majority of Anti-Douglas delegates to Charleston ; Douglas will be slaughtered there, and the mass of the Hoosier Democracy will acquiesce in tho " deep damnation of his taking off."' The Convention of the 11th of January will decide the fat of the Democratic party ia Indiana, and the Charleston Convention will 31 the doom of that party, as now organized, thronghtnit the nation, proTided the Opposition pursue a lcasnmibie course, and select some good man on u lumi ail eau unite, to overthrow the present rotten Administration. If such a man can be found, a v ictory equal to t'.as. of 1S40 awaits the opposition to Lecompton Democracy. The importance of the, subject, and the desire to " post " our Auti-Lccoiuptuo readers ( ho can mi longer claim llic Enquirer for their organ), is my excuse for this extended Mtcr on a single subject. J- II. M. In a Tiuht I'i.ai a. The Democracy of Fayette county, in convention assembled, ednpt-d a series of resolutions, one of which endorsed the Administration of .lames Butlianati, another approving of U.: course of Senator Douglas, and a thir l instructing tne delegate to the Slate Convention to select men a delegates to the Charleston Cocventint who"e sentiments wi re known to bein accordance with both of the other resolution. If the delegates laivc not a hard job of work laid ool for tbein. we arc greatly mistaken. CoTBsr. He was removed to the office of a physician close at hand, but expired in an hour from his first attack, surrounded by his wife and children. His disease was an affection of the heart. The State Sentinel contains the testimony adduced in the Morgan county election fraud case. The testimony, as published in the Sentinel, is damaging to the Republican i cause, and it will but little become them in 1 the ceater of thc State to prate of honesty until they can explain away or disprove the damnable frauds they were guilty of in the last election in Morgan County. Those proven guilty of the fraud, ought to serve a term in the penitentiary. It makes no difference which party isgailty of acts of this kind, the crime .is the same, and the severest penalties of the law should be visited upon its violators. A brother of Coppie, one of the prisoners at Charlestown, was arrested on tue 30th ultimo, about 3C miles from that town. He was disguised. ' Cook recognized him. All the other prisoners refused to identify him. About all the good Cook's friends from this State did him was to induce him to act a dishonorable part towards his fellow-associates, without in tho least improving his own condition. A new paper, to be called the Auu.ricun liuuiituni, is to le issued in llacine, Wisconsin, during the present month. The Bohemian population in the United States is said to be over a quarter of a million, aud hitherto they have not been able to keep up with the times, in consequence of their not understanding either German or Knglish. A correspondent of the Cincinnati ziili wrileS that paper under the date of Friday, from Katon; Ohio'- " This morning at 5 o'clock our quiet village v .is aroused by the tolling of every Uil in the town, and as (he inquiry passed along, 'What does this mean V the answer Wits, ' This iu honor of old Ossuwattomie Brown.' A quarrel ensued, which terminated by Martin stabbing Matheson iu the abdomen. Samuel J udali, Ksq, was expelled from the Board of Trustees of the Vincennes University on Monday. His conduct is alleged to have brought disgrace and discredit upon the University. His ability asa lawyer brought an immense sum of money into its collers. Senator Sumner has been chosen a foreign associate member of the French Society of Political Lcouoiny at Pans, lie is the first American on whom this honor has been conferred. A single lady named Sophia Minister, committed suicide in Cincinnati by taking laudanum. Mental derangement, assigned as the cause. Alfred -Kelly, distinguished politician of Ohio, died nt his 'residence in Columbui, on Thursday night last. 5" The Bowling Green Gazette gays that as a Mr. Ben. W. Hale. was going to his house near Franklin, Simpson" county, Kjn several nights ago, in passing throngh a low bottom, he spied a couple of men, who, on beholding Lini, started towards him. One of them h;id a gun in his hand, which he cocked and presented, remarking, " 1 :11 finish you now." Hale grasped the gun, but in his eriort to keep from being shot, was dismounted. His opponent threw him upon the ground, bcating.him most unmercifully. Hale finally succeeded in disengaging himself from his assailants, and made his escape. Neither of the robbers have been arrested. One of them, the Gazette says, is a Yankee schyoi-mastcr. - . , . 1ST A call for another Democratic Con- ;
tTenuoD ucu - n,l."it!-.''. u. u. isiorcan, uajvin Jones, ana unmerons others, appears in the Rockport Democrat.This call will result, we presume, in a double delegation to Indianapolis, from Spencer county. JWhich delegation will be admitted is a question involved in doubt, though, we think the delegates first appointed, and who are instructed to go for Joe Lane, stand the best chance. The Buchanan and Douglas wings of the' Democracy measured their strength at the recent county election, and, to our surprise, the DougIa3 men went to the wall. Being defeated before the people, we anticipate that the present movement will only be regarded as a disorganizing attempt, and the delegates to be appointed will be refused a seat in the State Convention. The administration men in our county were ont-generalled in the primary convention, and strong " Douglas .delegates were chosen , to represent the party at Indianapolis on the 11th of next month. But we have not yet heard of any movement for calling another convention, and tho appointment of another set of delegates. They quietly acquiesce in tbeir defeat. And they will insist, we drjubt not, on the Douglas men of Spencer county pursuing a similar course. . Everything cheeringly indicates that the period of caucus conventions has departed. The cry of party is fast losing its omnipotence. The people are beginning to understand the necessity of choosing men to fill their offices of honor and trust, and that men are seldom put forth by the intriguers who manage and control the party machinery. 'ja?" James Robb, of New Orleans, an Charles Congdon, of New York, have been appointed Receivers of the St. Louis, Alton, and Chicago Railroad, at thc suit of the first and second mortgage bond helder3. The road has been greatly embarrassed for some time ; so much so as to prevent its being kept in a thorough slate of repair. The St. Louis llfpullican says: "This decree will relieve it, and we may look for an improvement in its condition and traffic, and a certain ' renewal of confidence in the public mind in the permanency of its management, and an nbility to meet any engagement that may be made in connection with its future operations. We are advised that immediate arrangements will be made to construct an independent track between Alton and East St. Louis, and the whole line of road, roiling stock and machinery, upon which extensive improvements have been made during the past season, will be thoroughly repaired and renewed."
