gcg- Mose Ilarrell, of the Cairo. Gazette, has been traveling. Mose, be it known, is an abstemons maD, but when away from boms the Philistines sometimes lead him astray. The following is htf last experience in Paducah, Ky.: " After my arrival in Paducah yesterday, I felt a little bad, and mark you, I went and took a small drink, and that not improving my feelings, I took another and another, don't you observe ; and finally I got a little tight. In the evening I went into thecountry with a friend, mark you, and thinkiug I would cool off, I took several more drinks, don't you observe ; yet strange to say, the more I drank the tighter I got, until, mark you, I was decidedly inebriated wheu I went to bed. During the night I woke up, don't you observe, and 1 could not imagine where the d 1 I was, mark you. 1 became very anxious to learn my whereabouts, don't you observe. Finally, I determined to explore the room, don't you observe, and for that purpose arose from my bed, mark you, and after stumbling over about half a dozen chairs, don't you observe. I came to a table. Now, mark you, I reflected that the generality of apartments are a perfect or an oblong square, don't you observe, and, moreover, that the generality of tables are square, and I deduced from this, mark you, that, by feeline along the table until I came to a corner, I could get off at right angles and reach a corner of the room, and by that, guide by the wall to a door or window, don't you observe. Following out this idea, mark you, I begun carefully to feel along the edge of the aforesaid table, and finally gaining confidence, I went a little faster; the idea struck me that it was a d n long table, that I could not get to a corner, don't you observe; yet I persevered, and when sufficient light penetrated the apartment, I saw, mark you, that I had been following a d d round table all night, looking for a corner don't you observe. Parenthetical Preaching. An officer of a volunteer corps on duty in the place, and very proud of his fresh uniform, had come to Mr. Shirra's church, and walked about as if looking for a seat, but in fact to show off his dress, which he saw was attracting attention, from some of the le6S grave members of the congregation. He came to his place, however, rather quickly, on Mr. Shirra quietly remonstrating, " Oh, man, will ye sit down ; and we'll see your new breeks when the kirk's dune." This same Mr. Shirra was well known from the quaint, and, as it were, parenthetical comments which he introduced in his reading ofScripture, as, for example, on reading from the 11 tub Psalm, "I said in my haste all men are liars," he quietly observed, " Indeed, Dauvid, an' ye had been i' this parish ye might hae said it at your leisure." Reminiscences of Scotch Life, by Dean Ramsey. Mount Vernon. An exchange states an important fact, if true. It is said that " John A. Washington, the late owner of Mount Vernon, has burst up and gone to smash; speculation is the cause of it, whether faio or stock, can't say. The ladies who have paid him one hundred and seventyfive thousand dollars are swindled out oj their money. He can't give a clear title until all his old liabilities are cancelled. He owes Jive hundred thousand dollars, it is said.'( BS?" A fellow who had been excessively annoyed by the continual visits of sundry creditors, but had managed to come out right side up, was walking down street a few days since. Meeting a neighbor, he remarked : " You seem to walk more erect than usual, my friend." " Yes I have been straightened by circumstances. After a residence oi more than twenty years in the middle and Southern StHtcs, we think we have discovered a medicine which, to a certain extent, is a preventative of the attacks of bilious lever, atrne, ifcc, aud as such we recommend our Magnolia Whisky. We w ish the public to understand that we are not urging upon them the use of strong Liquors as a beverage.
