The Daily Journal. ======= FRIDAY MORNING...............DECEMBER 2 ======= RIVER ITEMS. ——— ARRIVED. Vixen, St Louis Kentucky, Memphis Chancellor, N O M McLellan. M'd City Fonth [sic] America, Plttsbg Lue Eaves, Green River Tempest, Louisville Izetta, Pittsburg Time, Tenn River Greenville, B Green DEPARTED Vixen, Pittsburg Kentucky, do Chancellor, Louisville M McLellan, do Sonth America, N O Izetta, St I.ouis Tempest, Nashville Masonic Gem, Wab riv Time, Louisville Greenville, B Green ——— ......Yesterday about 9 o'clock it commenced raining, and continued all day, and waa still raining at 12 o'clock, when we went to press. The river is rising rapidly, and the indications are favorable for a big stream once more. The Wabash is again on the advance. White river was rising yesterday, and we look for better times on the Wabash. The rains of yesterday seemed to be general, and our steamboat men have shed their long faces, and have commenced to shake hands with shippers, newspaper reporters, and their creditors. This is an indication of a speedy and general commencement of good times and profitable trips. At present there is any quantity of freight on the levee waiting shipment, and more coming in daily. Operations were almost entirely suspended on the levee, and our commission merchants all seemed to be waiting for the "first boat down." It is truly hard that we cannot have packets of our own by which our freight for the South can be disposed of. We are confident that there is plenty of business for two or three of the largest class boats, and we hope soon to see the <Autocrat> and <Philadelphia> in the trade, which will, to a certain extent, put an end to the peplexity of waiting for Louisville boats to come along and complete their loads. This has been the case for all time past, and is a source of disappointment and the means of keeping our city in the back-ground, while Louisville gets the credit for our shipments. Evansville does twice the amount of shipping to the South that is done at Louisville and gets no credit whatever for it, as the returns are inavariably made to the latter city. Will our merchants and business men generally, submit to this? Have we no enterprise? Do our citizens wish to have this place looked upon by business men and capitalists abroad as a mere stopping place for passing boats, when it is known at home that it stands conspicuous among the commercial marts of the country? Why can we not establish aud sustain a packet trade? Memphis, Louisville, Cincinnati, and other towns have done it, while we go on in the same old fogy way as heretofore, depending on the boats of other cities for the transportation of our produce. This course will soon bury us in oblivion so deep that all hope of a resurrection must be forever abandoned. By an injudicous course we are fast losing the trade of the Wabash, and the enterprise of our Kentucky neighbors will soou take the entire Green river trade away from us, and this, too, because of a lack of enterprise on the part of our merchants and monied men. We hope soon to see something done to advance the commercial interests of Evansville. Establishing and sustaining packet trades will do it. Will it be done? .......With fair offerings, we quote freight as follows: To New Orleans—Apples, 50c @ bbl; Tobacco, $5 @ hhd; Flour, 50c @ bbl", pound freights, 35c @ 100 lbs; Eggs and Whisky, $l.00 @ bll. To St. Louis —Pound Freight, 20c @ 100 lbs. To Cincinnati— ound [sic] freights (heavy), 15c @ 100 lbs; shipstuff @ and wheat, @ sack, 15c. ......The <Charley Bowen>, Capt Dexter, Clerk Markell, leaves for Cairo at 12 o'clock. She is the fastest and most complete steamboat that comes to our wharf, and passengers will find her well adapted for safety and comfort. There Is no boat that has done more to build up a trade than the <Bowen>, and she merits a liberal support from our shippers. Her officers are among the most gentlemanly, and accommodating on the river. Remember the railroad line packet at 12 o'cclock [sic]. She leaves punctually at that hour. ......The fleet and popular steamer <Lue Eaves>, is up for South Carrollton this afternoon. Passengers can find no better opportunity for safe and agreeable traveling than to go aboard the <Eaves>. Capt. McDonald will attend to every wish of his guests, and see that they are supplied with everything necessary for comfort and accommodation. ......A fellow yesterday forged an order on the clerk of the steamer <J. H. Done>, for $3.50, due one of the deck hands or that steamer, and received the money on it. He was arrested late yesterday evening by Marshal MARTIN, and most of the money recovered. His trial will probably take place to-day, as the Court is in session.— We did not succeed in learning his name. ......The <Silver Star> is the boat for Paducah at 12 o'clock. While our friend Gus. Dusouchet is at the desk, the <Star> must remain a popular craft to travel on. We advise those going to Paducah to go by the <Star>. ......The new steamer <John A. Quitman>, just completed at New Albany, was advertised to leave that port for New Orleans yesterday. She will probably be here some time to-day. Her speed is said to be greater than that of the far famed <A. L. Shotwell>. ......The <Masonic Gem> did not got off on Wednesday night, as was expected. She was unavoidably detained. She left yesterday afternoon with a fair trip of freight for points above Vincennes. ......The Moses McLlellan [sic], after having undergone thorough repairs at Mound City, passed up yesterday morning. She will soon commence her regular trips in the Louisville and Memphis mail trade. ......The steamer <Izetta>, from Cincinnati bound for St. Louis, with a good trip of freight and passengers, passed down yesterday. ......The <Chancellor>, from New Orleans, passed this port early yesterday morning for Portland. She had a fair trip of freight, and full of passengers. ......The steamer <Caroline> took her departure for Wabash yesterday morning. She went out perfectly light. ......Captains Throckmorton and Gorman have laid up the famous Missouri river packet <Florence>, for the season, and will devote their leisure winter hours to those pursuits which to them may seem best. ......Captain Newman Robirds has taken command of the <T. L. McGill>, and Capt. Burk has resigned the command for the wheel, he being now a regularly licensed pilot. ......The <Litlle [sic] Martha> has laid up on the Illinois, and hereafter the <Progress> will be the only packet in that river. ......The <Lake City> which sunk on Tuesday afternoon below St. Louis, was owned by Adam Jacobs, of Pittsburg, Capt. Sloan, and Capt. W. H. Blake, of Beaver, Pa., her commander. She was valued at $15,000 and insured for $11,000 in Pittsburg offices, ......The <Maid of the Mist> goes to Henderson this morning.

Albany , of tbo 20th f , ?- Boat building Here la ciosiug up tor m present season.. There is only one boat left on the stocks, that being Capt. Ford's New Orleans steamer. Telon'a foundry is closed up, they baring finished all their contracts. The Phunix foundry is still in full blast, and are turning out a lot of work. They will probably have work nearly all winter. This has been a year long to be remembered by the boat builders and mechanics of New Albany, they having turned out a great number of "boats, the most of which are large, and of the first class. The New Albany Ledger says freights are Uke & from that place at the following prices: ' Pound freights to New Orleans are taken at 30c ; iork bbl 75c; whisky $1 "0 barrel ; mutes, horses, and cattle at $G head. S3u There seems to be little doubt but that the severe storm and freezes in the south did great damage to the sugar crop. The southern press generally give the same report as the papers from which we copy. The Plaqueiuiiic (Iberville) Gazette of the 19th says : At the present time of writing, Thursday afternoon, the rain is coining down handsomely, with every prospect of a continuance, to the satisfaction of all. As we conclude this paragraph, -some sixteen hours later, the sun is shining brightly, and a mild southern breeze is prevailing, after topious showers the previous afternoon. Speaking of the su'ar crop, the Gazette says; If other perishes of the State are like this section, a half crop will not be made in the State. Planters here, whose crops last year brought six or seven hundred hogs heads, will not, this season, make more than 200 to 250. This is about the ratio. Short as the crop was expected to be before the commencement of the grinding season, the actual experience of converting the juice into sugar proves that it w ill be far oliorlcr than was anticipated. What specimens of sugbr, however, as we have seen, are of an excellent quality, and must bring a good price. The West Hatoii Uouge Sugar 1 Muter of the 19th, bay s : The heavy freezes in the early pin t of the week, have been disastrous to the cane. The weather moderated so far, on Wednesday, as to render tires unueee.-.tnry. A thaw has set in, uuii Ihu ctnisoqueiii es to Irozeu cane are but too well known to suur planters. We can no1,, at this time, attempt an estimate of our pari.sh crop. The result -will, however, soon be Known. The Poiut Coupee. Echo, of the 1 !Hh, ays: The unusually cold weather, for the, past j week, has injured, to an alarming extent, the cane crop. It has been frozen so hard as to prevent the extraction of uuy juice. tine of our planters made the discovery, after grinding several acres, and ebtaining about a barrel ef juice. All the cane which is standing will scarcely yield one-tturd. iayIIow hopeless the position of the Democratic purty will be iu 13C0, if com pelled to follow tho line marked out for it by the Federal Administration, the follow ing extract from a speech delivered by the Vice President at the Tippecanoe Battle ground, Lafayette, Indiana, on the 3d of De cember, 1850, will show " He had heard it charged that the fifteen slave States were conspiring to obtain entire possession of the General ( overninent, with a view ol bringing iu power to bear to extend and perpetute their peculiar institutions. I am connected with no party that has for its object the exteusiou of slavery, nor with any to prevent the people of a State or Territory from deciding the question of its existence or non-existence with them for themselves. I happened to he in Congress when the Nebraska bill paused, and gave it my voice and my vote because it did what it, did viz : it acknowledged the right of the people of the Territory to settle the. question for themselves, and not because I snjiposed, what I do not now believe, that it legislated slavery into the Territories. The Democratic party is not a pro-slavery party; it is neither proslavery nor anti-slavery.'' Patknts Grantku. The following pa tents were granted to Indianians on the 22d inst: D. He returned from the seaport of Jerusalem to Alexandria intheLnited Stales ship Macedonian, and from thence to a port of debarkation for Vienna in an Austrian vesseL which hon ored him by displaying tho American Hag. His health has been excellent even in Kgypt, during the unhealthy season. Upon leav ing Vienna he expected to visit Turin and Genoa, and to return a:ain to France by the Mediterranean. t&" The New York Leader, edited by a city official, says that Ex-Governor Sey mour, of Connecticut, Las been there holding consultations in the Buchanan and antiDouglas interest, and that the plau is for Fierce, beymour, Uuthne, Cold), and other candidates to carry as Danny delegates to Charleston as possible, aud then, caucusinej among themselves for oue man, rush that individual through without giving poor Douglas even a complimentary vote. Sey mour promises Connecticut to tho scheme. Mexico. It will be seen by our tli.-ipatch es, that the Mexican difficulties are likely to be put at rest for a season, by a compromise Juarez, the head of the present Liberal par ty, is to bo proclaimed President, and the laws conns' iing the Church property repealed.
