THUSDAY MORNING-.. ..DECEMBER 1 READING MATTER OS, EVEBY. . PAGE, ', ; ; i . , ., tsps-A Newa Sanmarjr. .Extensive preparations" forte""CbinA expedition are rapidly progressing in France. Some formidable curiosities in the shape of cannon, some of those captured by the allies at their first attack on the Peiho torts, were brought into Brest by a French steam frigate. Bombastic and abrord inscriptions are engraved on them ia the Chinese and Tartar languages. ( It will be a difficult matter for the United States to preserve their neutrality, in the event of a conflict between the Chinese and the Allies, without pursuing a humiliating course to obtain the conciliation of the Chinese, and purchasing a few Worthless favors at the price of our dignity and self-respect. It is understood at Washington that the physicians of Judge Douglas unite ia urging him to proceed to the coast of Florida, with a view to the restoration of hii health, and also that Mrs. Douglas accompany him for a similar purpose, as soon as his strength will enable him to travel.- It ia not yet known, however, whether he will act on the suggestion. From New Orleans we Lave Texas advices to the 25th. The Legislature has authorized the Governor to call out troops. Capt. Ford has been appointed to the command, and has started for the Bio Grande, with orders to arrest Cortinas and his baud. The excitement throughout Texas is intense. The small town of Gonzales raised two hundred men in two daysl Cortinas has returned the Deputy Sheriff of. Brownsville unharmed, contrary to the wishes of his own men. Gen. Houston recommends to the Legislature to raise a regiment of armed uieu to protect the frontier from the incursions of the Indians. The New York Kev says that Samuel J.: Tilden, the Tammany nominee for corporation counsel when the General Government declared war against Mexico, charged -the Democracy with being the authors of an "unjustifiable war for the extermination of slavery." The Newt also states that Tilden, Van Buren, and others, in 1847, drew up a paper, which was carried to Washington and handed to Preston King, who gave it to David Wilmot at a meeting of these gentlemen one evening at King's residence. Mr. Wilmot introduced this paper in the House of Representatives, which was the proviso of Tilden k Co., but now known as the " Wilmot Proviso." " " " The Secretary of War has received a dispatch from Lieutenant-General Scott, expressing the opinion that his suggestion to Governor Douglass of a temporary adjustment of the existing San Juan difficulties will be accepted. A Convention of the united Opposition ?f Missouri is to be held in JefTer.son City m the 28th inst., to nominate candidate?, immediately after the adjournment of this Convention, a Republipan Convention will e organized for the purpose of selecting lelegates to the National Republican Condition. The St. Louis evening Bulletin saya gold ias been discovered in southeast Missouri. 2 x per i menu confirm the opiuion that the re will yield about $ 10,000 to the tun. .'he precious metal is mixed, with platinum nd silver. Franklin Wright killed his wife with a uicber knife, at Haverhill, N. H. He was rrested aud confessed the deed. ' Henry M. Bird killed his brother-in-law, ohn Baker, in a street fight in Patoka Iwnship, Dubois county, a week ce two 50. Go it. Dr. Breed, formerly &,& examiner a the Patent Office, has been arrested and eld under $2000 bond.for the uttering of ob.ctionable words, which were afterwards ablished ia the Stales and Union newspa?rs. He was put under bond to kep the eace. lu Washington men enjoy the right f speech, but must by no means, exercise at right. Gov. Wise appeared to be Satisfied of the listence of secret societies in Ohio fcnd sew Were, the members of which are bound f horrid oaths, not only to rescue Old rown, but in the event of a failure to ac .mplish this, to avenge his death. "She overnor will be prepared for an exigency 'this kind. A correspondent of the Si. Lqui3. Demo at, says they had exjie, nced ad unusual Id spell of weather ia Denver City. On e 12th day of ovember, it was ascer ined that a most every bottle and barrel whisky on both, sides of Cherry Creek 13 solid ice. The writer thinks it is with mors there, as in the cities of the Stales th religion mighty hard to find the ar te pure and unadulterated. ... . A bill has been introduced, into tile Misri Legislature, to prevent the city of St. uis granting the -privilege to any person construct H,ntl tjge any railway in any eet of said city, except as it should hereer be authorized by a law of the State. A Washington dispatch to the Cinnati Gazette, sars that Gov. Willard has ,e to see Gov. Wise, with a view to obling the pardon of Capt. Cook, the inreetionist. udge Douglas and lady have been ad- : by their physician3 to visit the coast Hondo, with a view to the restoration of r health. It is not known whether they act on the suggestion, everal of the ministers of Washington, their Thanksgiving day sermons, early condemned the sympathy for Brown his doomed couferates, and declared . their fate is the just reward of their es. Davis for Speaker, lie can be elected We sbonld think his election would be as humiliating to the Old Liners as hat of a Republican. ; ;!..:! :l . , A meeting of the Republican Slate Central Committee is called by the Chairman, to be held in the Alius Building, Indiana oGs, on Wednesday, the 11th of Jannary. .The time, for holding the nexc Stale Convention will then be fixed, and other important business transacted, ':K:i': " Brownsville was still closely besieged on . the 19th, and an expedition wae preparing again t Cortinas. ( ; The St. Louis Republican of Tuesday contains the message of Gov. Stewart. The Governor takes strong grounds for the completion of the railroads. ; ; 4 - 'Democratic Kullstt.ieut. .:'i The campaign of 1860 is beginning to occupy the. minds of certain circles. The mo lift g2 are already arranging the preliminaries. -Jn.New York, says the Journal of Commerce, about four hundred new citizens were manufactured on last Monday out of ruw!foreiga emigrants, and on Tuesday following, about fire hundred more underwent the metamorphosis under the auspices of " Old Tammany," who pays the crrist. If the part v, in iv consolidated mass, were exhibited wUh, .thorough infusion and admixture" of all Us elements, the alchemist who could successfully analyze and classify the heterogeneous combination might be encouraged next to try his hand on the philosopher's stone. All of the principle of organization contained in the Democratic party, could be wrapped, and re-wrapped and securely bundled up in a moiety of the naturalization papers that belong to its members. Aye, tho whole party, in aggregate, could be pickled in the rot gut that is retired torun :i single campaign, and the j moral infidelity aud political heresies that distend its bloated pro-' portions, are sufficient to consign a nation,' double vthe size-.,. of ours, to the doom of Sodom arid Gomorrah. That party is a unit sadly disintegrated. It is harmonious they agree to disagree the harmony of disced. And we expect next to hear their propaganda applying to themselves the dogma of the TmrnaculAte Conception. ' They have fixed principles like the planels, a principle of revolving. Any ordinary circus bill would thoroughly advertise the programme of the party, every act being introduced with ground aud lofty tumbling. We have no objection whatever to the issuing of naturalization papers to those who are entitled to receive them under the laws of the United States, but the wholesale frauds tlmt are perpetrated on the people every year for political purposes, by enfranchising the kweigu emigrant." - almost? CT . . Organization r the Ilou. . ... How the House of Representatives will be organized, is somewhat like the Italian question complicated. ' It is conceded that no party has a clear majority, and whichever succeeds musk , make concessions.Aware of this faet.' both . the Democratic and Republican jarties are playing the agreeable to th anai-Lecouiptonites and South Americans. 'Che New York Tribune is particaUaly exercised in securing'. the Speaker. t is willing to throw overboard evey oihe efficer for that of Speaker. We copy fconi a Ute editoi ial in that paper: - We notice a suggestion from certain quarters that the Republicans should, hold Republican caucus, nominate ' a Republican candidate lor each office to be filled by the House, Mil " nail their colors to the niast,r" as the vain-glorious phmse is. This is madness suicide. It is the clear duty of the Republicans to elect the Speaker, and thus 'control the formation of the important Committees, if this be within their power. If they can do this only by supporting an anti-Lecompton Democrat or Southern American for Clerk or Printer nay, by letting the Clerkship go in one direction and the printing ia the other- -they will be pouucallyf ana morally culpable, ir they throw away the opportunity. If sacrificing every subordinate otike will secure them the Speaker, they onght not to hesitate a moment, but pitch them overboard. - We waut a Committee of Ways and Means that will hold a tight rein over the expenditures during the ensuing canvass; we want a Public Land Committee that will put the Homestead bill 4efbre the House' this side of Christmas," and through the House aliout New Years; we want a good Tariff bill framed though probably only tobe rejected, or divested of all its better provisions by the Senate; we want Investigating Committees that wjU fearlessly and thoroughly scrutinize the - xpeaditures;in every important brach-f tBe public service. AVe can only secure these by carrying the Speaker Vbat is the Clerkship, what the Printing, ia View-of this? sJMonUlembert is agaiu in hot water. We hear it rumored that their Hop during Christmas week, will be hi fancy costume. It would doubtless be very1 agreeable.
